UC Davis is going to be a tough challenge. They showed in honolulu what a talented and physical team they can be. Wahine will need to be in top form.

  2. Cindy Luis November 7, 2019 10:55 am

True. road matches always tough. Many of the Wahine have not played in the Pavilion.

  3. ashley November 7, 2019 11:57 am

yeah and I thought the same when the Wahine traveled to UCSB. no lie Davis played them tough, but there was a huge difference when RAM inserted BVS in the third set. don’t think RAM will keep Brooke on the bench till set 3 this time

Predict 5 seat again with Davis.

  5. Baby-Dude November 7, 2019 12:11 pm

    4 Correction 5 sets.

Cindy, no idea what you are writing your Friday article about but perhaps this posting but help (or confuse): https://www.ncaa.com/news/volleyball-women/article/2018-11-08/ncaa-volleyball-teams-high-rpi-rankings-tournament
    ________________________________

To those new to NCAA D1 Women’s Volleyball’s tournament, keep in mind these facts.

    1. No matter what a team’s RPI is, the winner of a conference or conference tournament is awarded an AUTOMATIC bid/berth into the NCAA tournament.

    2. No matter what a team’s RPI is, no team is considered for an AT-LARGE bid/berth if its overall W-L record is not .500 or higher.

    3. And, as has been pointed out, “most stark difference in RPI between a team that missed the tournament and one that made it came in 2015. Baylor, Boise State and Wyoming each missed the NCAA tournament with RPI rankings of 42nd, 43rd and 44th. Michigan State made the tournament and was 54th in RPI.”

    4. The RPI ranking is just one of several published criteria the Volleyball Committee considers (though given the most weight). Aside: As I’ve posted in a previous post, the 2019 Volleyball Committee, in its Nov 3-release of its first listing of potential top 10 seeds, announced that currently it would rank Creighton Bluejays of the Big East the NCAA tournament’s No. 10 seed position in spite of it having a RPI of 19.

    GO BOWS!

If the match goes to five sets, maybe I can watch the tail end of it when I return from Hilo. Glad to hear that Tiff Wells will broadcast radio live on line. Maybe it will be possible to synchronize the sound with the video. But then maybe it will go only to three sets. After all, Cal Poly and UCSB were able to beat Davis on the road in three sets last week, so why shouldn’t UH be able to do that?

    3 sets Hawaii

    @6 WaveRipper

The URL is sufficiently insufficient. Next time list “all” the published criteria the Volleyball committee considers; giving half the criteria is useless. If you don’t know them all what’s your point?

What is the tiebreaker if UH ties with either UCSB or Cal Poly with identical 14-2 records (assuming UH and a rival wins out)? UH has swept the season series with UCSB. Cal Poly and UH have split the season though Cal Poly’s win was better than UH’s win.

Got some good matches going on. WCC got great live streaming, to bad BW can’t have the same. UCLA streaming live, most of the other PAC 12 is on the PAC 12 Net work.

Mahalia White gave the ‘Bows fits when they last played in that 5 set match at the SSC. However, she didn’t play in their last match vs. Fullerton, so I’m wondering if she might be sick or injured. If she’s going to be out vs. the ‘Bows, that pretty much leaves Matias as the main offensive threat, and the ‘Bows should be able to key on her and hopefully shut her down. If White is going to be out, I think the ‘Bows sweep 3-0.

    6. Friday’s article about possibility of 3 Big West teams getting in tournament
    10. wrote about the tiebreaker several times . If Wahine win out, they will at least share the crown but will get the automatic bid by virtue of having the tiebreakers on UCSB and Cal Poly.
There is no possibility of a three-way tie at 14-2. UCSB and Cal Poly play each other Saturday and someone will be 10-2, the other 9-3.
If Hawaii and UCSB tie, Hawaii has the tiebreaker over UCSB (2-0 in head-to-head) .
If Hawaii and Cal Poly tie, then Hawaii has tiebreaker by virtue of winning the series with UCSB. Even if Cal Poly splits with UCSB.
Since Hawaii and Cal Poly split (1-1), then the next is the head to head over the next team in the standings. That would be UCSB. Hawaii has the tiebreak on UCSB.
It does not go to set differential.
    12. White had 17 kills vs. UH, just one kill in Set 5. She didn’t play Tuesday. Not sure if she’s hurt or not. They have Matias and it is senior night.

  14. Maverick November 7, 2019 8:22 pm

    13. And the fact that UH’s loss to UCI won’t factor in the tie-breaker because there is no way for UCI to catch UCSB in the standings.

    9. Same old same old. The URL is not meant to be a comprehensive listing of the criteria the Volleyball Committee uses. Please write your complaint to Jacoby Myers, the author of the article, who says the same thing I said: ” RPI ranking is just one of several criteria the selection committee considers.” I just added that it’s given the most weight and probably the most press.

And as you are aware of, others like Maverick (14 above) have posted on Cindy’s blog the link to the 2019-2020 Pre-Championship Manual, which lists the Selection Criteria.

If you feel that “all” criteria the Volleyball Committee uses should always be mentioned when discussing selections, they you should send your complaint to Michelle Durban, Chair of the Volleyball Committee, who gave some of the criteria the Volleyball Committee used in selecting its potential Top 10 seeds in the NCAA D1 Women’s Volleyball Championship tournament (but did not list “all”) in the link to the Volleyball Committee’s Top 10 seed selection I posted a few days earlier. I’m sure she has all the time in the world to respond to frivolous posts.

Around one month later, wahine is heading towards teams made mostly with taller, stronger hitters/blockers…Now is the time to prepare using next four games. Few thoughts: 1) Need to be fluid with few combination plays with MBs to support OHs. 2) Kyra need to catch up Rika. 3) Need to use depth not as spare tires to fix injuries but as pace-keepers in running/cycling team supporting the starting line up providing brief change ups in offense/defense, mental/physical rest to key players. Wish to see depth (TW, Akana, Riley) is used in few rotation in each match (of course, not each game). (Don’t forget the lesson learned from first Irvine game, being an air-balloon lying flat on the ground at the end of the game). 4) Wish current crew carries all the way to third round. 5) Need some quick screaming (one syllable) verbal code by setter to hitter in quick tempo passes to avoid misconnections. 6) Why wahine 2019 has a genuine chance to make it final four? Key hitters as a group bring diversity in their attacks with making their own style of earning points. Current crew made with depth is capable to carry the team over third round keeping key players fresh, and in quarter finals, Jolie could add a surprise factor. 7) Hope, keep playing back-2-back mode with depth in first day, rather than playing one game at-a-time. You don’t run too fast in first half of run and then hit the wall in second half. Specially, true up to quarter finals with two back-2-back days.
