Cal poly announcer bringing up the last point @ UH as controversial but not that it was a correct call.

  2. UHVoice97 November 9, 2019 5:45 pm

    1. Agreed. Noticed he also missed the illegal backrow attack on the UCSB setter and Cal Poly net violation. Needs to study referee’s signals and not rely on “official announcement” (as he said it on air) by the public address announcer.

  3. Baby-Dude November 9, 2019 6:04 pm

Looks like a sweep for CP. After Riverside match tomorrow Wahine have long break before next match and long break after that before tournament . Going be boring few weeks.

  4. Big Island Volleyball Fan November 9, 2019 6:31 pm

Yep, a sweep. If both UH and Cal Poly win the rest of their season, both teams will share the Big West title with the automatic bid going to UH and Cal Poly getting an at-large berth. Lindsey Ruddins was limited to single digits with her lowest kill percentage. Guess UCSB came in too cocky and unprepared, underestimating its rival while the Cal Poly came fired up playing inspired volleyball. The big crowd helped them extend their home match win streak to 30.

  5. Kauaiboy November 9, 2019 7:04 pm

Wow UCSB looked awful with so much on the line. Ruddins was a no show, although it seemed like UCSB was purposely trying to NOT SET HER… Cal Poly has been the best team in conference even with multiple injuries, props to their coach!

    3. Hawaii plays Sunday. Next matches are Nov. 21-22. Then 9 days off before selection Sunday. Dec. 1
    4. not sure why you think UCSB came in cocky. Mott a very difficult place to play. There’s a reason Mustangs have won 30 in a row. Link to box below

Cal Poly with 6 aces and very tough serving. UCSB got predictable, outblocked 7-1. Ruddins didn’t get any help. Froley a team-high nine kills, a third of UCSB’s kills.

When Is NLI day. Will this be the 1st time Wahine won’t have a setter for spring practice.

  8. tongo November 9, 2019 8:08 pm

Mustangs served really tough and Gauchos were limited sets to Lindsey. Perhaps Santa Barbara is saving Lindsey for post season since they appear to have already made post season. Congrats to Cal Poly, they looked really good.

    7. According to http://www.nationalletter.org, the initial signing date is November 13, 2019, final signing date is August 1, 2020. We shall see. There’s always the possibility of a transfer setter coming in for the spring semester just like how Jolie came in and played against Texas in this year’s spring exhibition. It’s highly unlikely 2020 recruit Kate Lang will apply for early enrollment, but I do hope a quality setter decides to transfer to UH to back her up or continue in the coaches’ 6-2 offense.

    6. I thought that UCSB came in with an attitude that they could beat Cal Poly easily now that they had Ruddins in the lineup. Only toward the middle of the second and third sets they stepped up their efforts, but then faded away.

Yes, I agree with you, Cindy, that Mott Gym is a hard place to play since the bleachers are very close to the arena and it gets very loud with a full capacity of 3,000 or more. I’ve been there in person last year September to see them beat UCLA two consecutive nights in a row when both van Winden sisters played. But now they aren’t playing there any more. So I was still surprised that they kept up their winning record this year, both against UH and UCSB, the last I appraised at 50-50 chance.

  11. Bowsfan November 9, 2019 9:20 pm

I wonder if Torrey Van Winden’s going to go the same route that Julia Scoles. Retire from indoor and go beach only. She could get medical redshirt but is it worth the risk. Interesting articles about both of them and concussion.

  12. Big Island Volleyball Fan November 9, 2019 9:48 pm

    11. Glad you read the article in the volleyball magazine I presume. Appreciated your comments. But even beach is not concussion-proof if both players collide while trying to save a ball or one gets hit in the head while blocking. It is true that she aspires to be a beach volleyball professional. As far as I heard, no medical redshirt, but I’ll find out for sure on senior night when the announcer will let us know who is graduating. I think she would be wise to quit volleyball and save her brain. She majors in parks and recreation administration so there are other avenues open to her.

UCSB Coach responsible. OHs pass, Opposites do not. If you have never played volleyball, know that passing (serve receive) is high stress and energy draining.

Examples: notice how Hanna Helvig’s hitting percentage is terrible on the left side (OH). She scores the bulk of her points from Opposite. Notice how Lindsay Ruddins faded against UH in the 5th set?

  14. H-Man November 9, 2019 10:31 pm

    Ruddins faded in the 5th because she had 80 swings – kill attempts. 80 swings is an insane number;

  15. Sheila November 10, 2019 6:51 am

Although Hanna & MR make relatively more passing errors, these two bring crucial back-row offense without hesitation. Rather than trying to make a perfect pass from tough server, just hanging there and let the team do the rest. Wahine can not afford to keep, particularly, Hanna out of back-row duties every single rotation. Wahines’ back-row attack brings uncertainty to opponents and make wahine’s overall all cylinder attack more affective and needs whenever wahine struggles in front row offense against strong defending opponents. Wahine is not an intimidating team to win the respect from AVCA coaches, but wahine is well balance team that capable to adjust according to the strength of opponent, and then survive. Keep going and raise RPI to eight at end of regular season.

  16. blunite November 10, 2019 8:57 am

    14. Granted 80. swings is a lot (again coach’s fault), but she often takes the majority of swings, 50+ is nothing to her.

The reason team’s target the OHs on serve is to take them out of the offense. As an OH Ruddins has to receive serve. If she played OPP she would have more energy.

Nikki Taylor often took tons of swings but she played Opposite (no passing). Hanna Helvig’s play is markedly different when she plays OH vs OPP (100 percentage points different).

Off topic but junk news for the Warriors recruiting efforts, the top recruit since TJ Defalco also chose LBSU over Hawaii 🙁 !!!!! Looks like LBSU is reloading…

  18. Ki November 10, 2019 10:08 am

    17. Who is that top recruit?

  19. Kauaiboy November 10, 2019 10:25 am

Klistan Lawerence from the state of Florida. He actually reminds me more of Jalen at Stanford.

With long breaks in between games, hopefully Jolie will be able to play the last two games and get ready for NCAA Tournament

New thread up for Sunday with UH-UCR links
From what I was told when Cal Poly was out here likely Van Winden will retire from indoor. May or may not play beach for the Mustangs. looking to play pro beach.
    17. not too worried about the Warriors, especially this year.
Hawaii looked really good when playing Beach last month. if Beach stays with that lineup don’t see them in the top two of Big West.
thanks for getting to NLI date. Nov. 13
