Nice win for UCLA (and UH’s RPI)…I wonder if Cal will be ranked come Monday…

The men’s volleyball schedule and roster photos are live:

Cal Poly just swept CSUN while the match between Long Beach and UCSB is still going on. UCSB lost the first two sets and is attempting a comeback now. For sure Long Beach will give Cal Poly a much bigger challenge. Would not hazard a prediction on the outcome of that.

  4. Big Island Volleyball Fan November 15, 2019 6:51 pm

UCSB’s comeback attempt sputtered after having been ahead in the middle of the set. Long Beach just swept UCSB. It will be interesting to watch Long Beach vs. Cal Poly tomorrow. This could possibly go to five sets and then it’s anybody’s game.

  5. wahinefan87 November 15, 2019 7:28 pm

San Diego just beat BYU in five. They take over the top spot in the WCC.

  6. Matt November 15, 2019 7:33 pm

The Toreros just gave a big whooping of No. 10 BYU in San Diego in the 5th set, 15-9. After falling to a 2-1 set deficit, they win it in 5. USD was ranked 24, so that could bolster the ranks a bit.

    2. there is a separate thread about men’s volleyball schedule as an earlier post
    3 et al
    updated scores in main box
    6. the rankings don’t matter but it will help hawaii’s RPI along with UCLA’s win today.

  8. Matt November 15, 2019 7:48 pm

Interesting you say that, Cindy. Because Hawaii’s idle until next week, there could probably be a few changes in terms of RPI on some of the other teams that have higher RPI than Hawaii. Unless, a few changes after this week could alter a little with the matches going on currently.

  9. Cindy Luis November 15, 2019 7:57 pm

    8. Hawaii being idle doesn’t mean the Wahine’s RPI stays idle.
what their opponents do and those opponents’ opponents do still affects the calculations.
Hawaii might move up a spot in the Top 25 poll. We’ll see what the coaches think on Monday.

Cindy, looking forward to your Warriors Volleyball insert a la Wahine Volleyball stylings. If it’s anything like the Wahine’s inserts it should be fun and creative. Do you have an approximate deadline for the insert?

RE: previous threads, E Komo Mai Kate Lang & Anna Kiraly!!!

With LBSU sweeping UCSB, next Friday’s game will be interesting. I wonder how it would be like if the Wahine were able to schedule their games like the Warriors…i.e. playing the same opponent twice in one weekend, instead of splitting up those pairings through out the season and having to travel up and down the coast. A logistics question maybe?

    GO BOWS!!!

  11. darkfire35 November 15, 2019 8:56 pm

Just curious, Cindy. What inspired Anna to want to travel almost 8,000 miles from a land locked nation to a place surrounded by water and away from her family? At least Hanna had and was influenced by Angelica’s presence to help her with some of the language difficulties, customs, culture, etc.

  12. Ichyboy November 15, 2019 10:28 pm

Fyi Hanna speaks perfect English and does not appear to need help there.

    11) Never understood why anyone is surprised that someone would want to go school in a tropical paradise where they could play competitive volleyball and have a worldwide fan base. Most healthy young adults want to leave home at some point, and are more than willing to trade a little homesickness for the distance and independence and opportunity to grow that UH Volleyball can provide. Now, if Hawai’i volleyball could just chuck some of the dumb football generated mumbo jumbo that is truly meaningless to anyone not from Hawai’i, like ‘Defend Pride Rock’, or ‘Live Aloha, Play Warrior’. Meaningless harmless sports marketing catch phrases at best, but entirely can’t relate nonsense to mainland and foreign kids. And maybe enough to make them wonder just a bit if that’s something they want to associate with.

    11. You are making questionable assumptions.

  15. Sheila November 16, 2019 9:31 am

If a foreign student knows to read & write English (with minimum required TOEFL score for admission), that will be a good starting point to be in most of academic programs at University even if you are not capable to speak in English at all. You may struggle longer to learn proper volleyball techniques but surprisingly, you will start speaking in English comfortably within 2-3 months in very friendly, supporting, tolerant team/group environment. In addition, ‘International Student Office at University’ acts as a guardian for international students with some programs to get accustom to local culture fast. In fact, most of graduate programs in Manoa campus have more international students…If you are talented foreign student; then the command of English is never a barrier to be in wahine squad.

Coming to visit Hawaii on vacation is a dream for many Europeans, but having the opportunity to attend school here is off the chart.

  17. vballfan November 16, 2019 11:03 am

    11. Pushing your limits and going out of your comfort zone can be positively life altering and provide experiences for big growth and expansion of one’s world view. Student-athletes who choose to come here for an undergraduate experience set themselves up to be strong candidates for graduate programs because Hawaii offers a unique experience and exposure to stuff found no where else in da world.

Season Ticket Question: How much does the Men’s Volleyball Season Ticket cost?

  19. Cindy Luis November 16, 2019 2:49 pm

    10. looking forward to finishing it up too. Will be right before the first match on Jan. 3
    11. i don’t know how the recruiting process went. Kiraly has a youtube video recruiting video
I didn’t see that Hellvig had a difficult time. As have mentioned, English is a required school subject in European countries.
    15. Again, English is required in school in Europe. And Volleyball is a universal language. And as you mention, UH has quite a number for foreign students.
    18. haven’t seen ticket prices announced but I know they are higher than last year according to the season ticket holders who got their renewal forms
For any ticket questions, go to Hawaiiathletics.com and click on TICKETS
