Think players need to better understand their zones, and when receiving, maybe think “catch the ball” which might translate to a read rather than reaction. Get your body behind the ball, keep it centered, and the adjust left or right , drop your shoulder to the target

    .
Looking forward to the UCSB game. Not writing off that game by any stretch. Go Wahine.

off subject for those who follow hawaii high school VB: how good are two sophomores for Kamehameha? second comings of Lily?

  3. Brandon October 12, 2019 3:23 pm

Kahahawai is really really good. Reminds me a lot kahumoku. Lanky but hits one hell of a ball. Not playing 6 RO yet but she will.

Robins is undersized but a gamer. She never gives up. Hope Robyn can land both of them

  4. Optimist October 12, 2019 3:28 pm

Keeping RAM goes with her gut feel who is where and when. When Hellvig is in the back, front should have Iosia, MB (Williams or Westerberg) and Akana/Wagoner. When Hellvig up front, MB (Igiede or Westerberg) and Akana/Wagoner. Ross does better as a later sub spark plug, hits hard, but not as much finesse. By coming in later still fresh and high velocity and opponents may be a little slower and fatigued. If blocking is lacking, Akana may pair better with MB (Williams or Westerberg) (because she is MB) over Wagoner. But I think Wagoner is a better 6 rotation option.

    3. You think UH is watching Kahahawai ? Just saw her once against Iolani few days ago and she is good and only Soph.

Live online stream link goes to the Hawai‘i channel for Big West which doesn’t show anything on the schedule right now.

If you don’t see the match streaming there, go to UCSB’s Big West channel. It’s live there.

    5. of course they are watching all the good local players.
    6. thanks for letting me know. updated it with UCSB link

Baylor still sweeping opponents away, but maybe starting to look a little human?

  9. Setaone October 12, 2019 4:04 pm

Is the video working for anyone?

  10. Setaone October 12, 2019 4:06 pm

    Never mind. Got it.

  11. Rice October 12, 2019 5:39 pm

Woohoo! Amazing job Wahine! 1000000% support you all! Go Bows!!!

  12. Lori October 12, 2019 5:40 pm

This team is hard to figure out. I thought UCSB would have been better than Cal Poly. It seems like Ross has a really good game every 1-2 or 2-3 games.

  13. Robin October 12, 2019 5:41 pm

Actually the biggest win of the year so far IMO. If you’d have to take either win vs. Poly or SB, would it be SB with its receiving votes and higher RPI (35)?

  14. Kazu October 12, 2019 5:42 pm

Got to watch it on Big West TV , up and down but was good. Wahine sweep and i thought it would be the other way round. Glad they prove me wrong. Maybe this will turn the table, and hopefully the two injured will return by next week end.

  15. islandman October 12, 2019 5:47 pm

Makenna Ross had a huge game, Take that, Makenna detractors. She comes up big, at times.

Proud of Na Wahine!! Way to bounce back, ladies!!

  17. Cindy Luis October 12, 2019 6:07 pm

    15. spelled McKenna
but she did have a nice match. She told me that she had to reset her mind from Friday night and play with confidence.

  18. Cindy Luis October 12, 2019 6:09 pm

    12. think Cal Poly the better team. UCSB has relied on L. Ruddins so much. Freshman Froley didn’t have a great match, leaving Ruddins to carry a lot.

  19. jmy October 12, 2019 6:18 pm

    18. We’ll see next Sat. when Poly visits UCSB…

  20. Cindy Luis October 12, 2019 6:37 pm

    19. that we will

  21. tongo October 12, 2019 7:46 pm

Super comeback match! Congrats to the players for rebounding so well – amazing especially for the freshmen. Congrats to RAM and staff for coming up with the winning strategy. It was great to see the ladies having fun again.

  22. Setaone October 12, 2019 7:47 pm

McKenna proved a lot of people wrong tonight. She hits with no fear. She needs to learn hire to hit high hands every single time. That is her money shot!

  23. Kauaiboy October 12, 2019 7:55 pm

Was Surprised to see no Riley on the court tonight. Nice rebound by our Wahine, setting for the most part to the pins was much better! Passing was decent except for Helvig who really struggled passing for most of the night, she was being served non stop. This UCSB team looked like Hawaii did last night against Poly. Hoping they can knock off Cal Poly next week sat.

  24. nomu1001 October 12, 2019 8:21 pm

    Overlap, as I recall

    (1) means the outside right and left front row makes sure they are right and left of the middle hitter respectively.

    (2) Similarly, back row right and left makes sure they are right and left of the middle back.

    (3) Then, back row players makes sure they are position in back of the player in front of them.

    (4) However, front left and right can be in back of middle back.

  25. nomu1001 October 12, 2019 9:06 pm

Looks like coach agreed with whoever suggested TW play front row.

  26. darkfire35 October 12, 2019 9:17 pm

I was on the golf course, got back to my car just in time to hear Tiff say something in Hawaiian ending in Aloha! Anyone know what all he said? I think Kanoa Leahy says the same thing at the end of the Wahine’s match when they win. Anyone know if the game is available for viewing on BigWestTV or is it just streaming and no archiving?
I was hoping the Wahine was going to at least win in 4, but SWEEP?!! Wow! Especially after last night and after all the trials and tribulations they’ve gone through in the past month!! GO BOWS!!!

  27. Cindy Luis October 12, 2019 9:18 pm

    25. Thought so too. Much depends on how the other two middles (Igiede and Williams) are doing as to when and where Westerberg is used. Westerberg, has played all three positions before (LS, RS, MB) in high school and club, and was OH Saturday, something Akana did against Cal Poly. Both players went middle to OH against Fullerton last week, with Westerberg ending at MB.
Neither Akana nor Wagoner played last night, a first for Wagoner.

Was looking at the box score and it shows that Hellvig had four kills in a row in the 1st set to make it 23-17.

  29. Cindy Luis October 12, 2019 9:52 pm

    26. yep. As I mentioned on my play-by-play above
4:28: Hanna Hellvig with 3 straight kills. Hawaii up 22-17. TO UCSB
    +++++
Didn’t add it to the main box above but my rewrite for Sunday’s paper mentions the four in a row. Coming out of the timeout her fourth made it 23-17.

  30. Cindy Luis October 12, 2019 11:03 pm

    Surprise or not?
Cal State Fullerton def. UC Irvine, 19-25, 25-17, 25-18, 30-28

  31. andy October 13, 2019 7:45 am

Got to go to both games this weekend. Poly’s gym was loud, raucous, packed to capacity with their cheerleaders and band, and because seating was assigned, Hawaii fans were scattered about. Pretty awesome college sports atmosphere. UCSB felt like a home scrimmage with most of the UH fans sitting together behind the bench, and it looked like the team was vibing it.

  32. peanut October 13, 2019 8:05 am

Not that surprised that CSF beat UCI based on the games against UH. I think the loss to UCI was mainly the injury to Van Sickle and the team not being able to deal with that. When she left the match in the 3rd game they looked like a different team and it carried over to the match with CSF losing the first 2 games until the coaches made a desperation lineup change.

  33. islandman October 13, 2019 8:43 am

The article today mentioned that Ross was teammates with the two Ruddins at Aliso Niguel High School, so maybe she felt comfortable or motivated playing against them,
It also mentioned Kyra had a serving run of 6 pts in the 3rd set, including 2 Aces to get to 20-13 from 14-13.
They cut down the service errors to 7 compared to the CSUF game when they had 14

  34. tongo October 13, 2019 9:12 am

Just saw the replay and Ross had a monster night while playing so smart. Congrats!!

  35. Kahuna October 13, 2019 9:26 am

I think Ross have cemented herself in the starting lineup even when both JR and BVS come back.

UH will probably go back to that offense that got us that #11 ranking where the setters sub in for the middle. The only change would be that Ross will be in for Wagoner.

Riley really struggled offensively. With Ross being a more offensive minded hitter, I think that offense will be even more potent.

jR, BVS, Hanna and McKenna can all put up big number hitting and will be a handful.

  36. Bowsfan October 13, 2019 10:34 am

Just a question, next year Bakersfield and San Diego joins the Big west. Does this mean UH will have 1 less tournament, since we’ll have 4 more games. Not sure how it works. We’ll see Trinity back in the Stan.

  37. Maverick October 13, 2019 3:09 pm

Don’t be surprised if UH’s adj. RPI rank rises to a top 10 position tomorrow. Despite losing a match, UH will benefit from the top 50 RPIs of both Poly and UCSB, including the bonus points for playing both.

  38. Maverick October 13, 2019 3:19 pm

    36. Bakersfield’s RPI rank was 238 last week. UCSD is a Div II program. Won’t help UH’s RPI at all. Pre-season wins and rise of programs like Poly and UCSB will be key if UH hopes to host in the future.

    37. Correction: bonus point for beating UCSB

  39. jmy October 13, 2019 4:30 pm

    30. Not so much a surprise when the bottom teams beat each other up…Kind of a surprise that UW went five with Oregon…but that’s the Pac-12!

  40. WaveRipper October 13, 2019 5:37 pm

Only major upsets in the Top 25 were unranked Georgia over #12 Kentucky and unranked Cal Poly over #19 Hawaii. Both ranked teams will drop but not out of the Top 25.

Dropping out of the Top 25 should be (IMAO) #22 Missouri (downed by Ole Miss, a team that started its season with 3 Ls followed by 13 consecutive Ws) and #23 Florida State.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (19-1) of C-USA deserves to be among the Top 25 teams. Also 12-match-winning-streak San Diego Toreros (14-4) of WCC deserves a reappearance in the Top 25, but voters may want to wait till after its match against BYU this Friday.

As for Cal Poly, votes that went to others-receiving-votes UCSB and some votes that were in Hawaii’s pocket will shift to the Mustangs but I don’t think the Mustangs will reemerge in the Top 25 yet. What happens in the Top 25 won’t matter until the matchup between Cal Poly at UCSB this Saturday, which will bring a lot of clarity to those unsure if Cal Poly is the sure bet in its three-peat quest.

  41. Maverick October 14, 2019 7:08 am

    37. As predicted, UH is #9 in the latest official RPI rankings: https://extra.ncaa.org/solutions/rpi/Stats%20Library/Nitty%20Gritty_101319.pdf
