University of Hawaii men’s volleyball assistant coach Josh Walker was named the 2019 AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year today.

Walker, a second-team AVCA All-American in 2010 for the Warriors, completed his fourth season on head coach Charlie Wade’s staff in 2019. He is the first UH assistant coach to win the award since it debuted in 2010.

The Virginia Beach, Va., native helped lead the Rainbow Warriors to a national runner-up finish and a program-best 28 victories, which included a record 25-match win streak. UH also captured its first conference title and set an NCAA record with a 74-set win streak.

Thank you to everyone that reached out to congratulate me. I appreciate it more than you could know. In team sports individual awards are never the goal, but this award is more validation on how special this past season was. Working in college Athletics my goal is to help every student-athlete I come into contact with to become the best version of themselves. This award is impossible to get without a high level of trust, commitment, and hard work from the student-athletes. I'm blessed to have been around such a great group last season and I can't thank them enough for believing in me. That being said I'm as ready as anyone for this upcoming season! #GoBows #ToGodBeTheGlory

Some interesting things about this announcement:
    1. Walker got it despite having fewer years as a UH assistant than Zarkovic. Either merits the award, but just interesting. Congrats to Walker!
    2. I don’t understanding why AVCA is announcing it now considering Walker was not under a SafeSport investigation. Perhaps the AVCA thought the optics of announcing Walker and not Wade last season would be bad.
    3. Could SafeSport be nearing a completion of its investigation, making way for 2019’s NCOY announcement (I presume it is Wade, assuming he is cleared)? Wade is still under an interim suspension per USA Volleyball’s site.

    Aloha Cindy.

Any indication if Jolie will be traveling with the team?

    1. Believe both were nominated for the award.
who knows what the AVCA’s thinking is.
We have always believed that to be the case, that Wade was COY and they delayed it because of the investigation. I did ask UH about it and the word is that the investigation still on-going.
That info included in my print story for tomorrow.
    2. Not yet. So weird, I was told they were leaving today. but have since learned they leave Thursday.
    3. yep, will post complete scores on another thread

Maybe they leaving a day later to save money. One less day at a hotel and one extra day in class is the better option.

I was wondering why UH would need to leave on a Wednesday for a Saturday match. Leaving Thursday makes more sense.

    5. that makes sense but it’s a red-eye. they get into Dallas at 5 a.m. Friday. then drive to Waco.
    6. Maybe, maybe not. First-place votes split all over the place this week. but Stanford winning at Nebraska big.
BTW, Texas loses at Rice in 5
