Onward to CSUF.

Hey Cindy – do you have to go through all of the click not a robot stuff every time that you post too?

As tough 7 matches coming after today, wish bench subs (Skyler, Krug, Ross, etc) get tune up time today. Expects continuing tune up of Granato/setters attack variations today. Still failing to take an easy point off over passes which could have dumped to side or down instead hitting back to diggers? Wahines weakness: not totally dominating in any single category. But wahines strength (above average in every category) is good enough to over come this weakness as well as to perform like top 25 team.

You are right. Usually one person cannot lift a team to victory, Cal Poly will learn tomorrow that they can’t just count on Torrey van Winden to carry them against Long Beach at the Pyramid. She will need help from other players. Unlike CSUN, I don’t expect Cal Poly to win in three straight sets. This could go to five sets either way.

However, there are exceptions. Consider that Egonu, the Italian superstar, lifted her team to victory against China in the Women’s World Championship today with a world record of 45 points (39 kills in 88 swings, a block and 5 aces). It took five sets, the last two extended. That was a monumental upset! So Italy will play against Serbia again for the world championship within a few hours. Italy will be tired just like Long Beach that just defeated UCSB, also in five sets.

Let’s say two teams are tied for first. However, one team has swept the other in conference play, two matches to none. Then that team gets the AQ and steps 2 through 5 are not needed.

What happened to the concept of team.?If I was a member of the UCSB team, I would not be thrilled with the way things are going. Are the UCSB coaches not smart enough to design other plays other than set the ball to a Ruddins?

If I was the coach, I would never do that to the team . It’s just not good for team morale.

Thanks, Cindy, for citing the rule book. It explains why Greenthumb was wishing that CSUN could have taken a set from Cal Poly. However, rule #1 doesn’t make sense to me. How can there be a winner between two tied teams? Does this mean that whoever has the better sets-won-lost ratio wins? I can understand the other rules as they sound similar to tiebreaker rules in world championship matches.

http://www.bigwest.org/code_book/2017/2016-17%20BWC%20Manual%20-%20Section%2021-VB8.1.16.pdf
In the event two teams tie for first place in the final standings, the following tie-breaking formula shall be used to determine the automatic qualifier:
1. The winner of the two-match series between the tied teams
shall be declared the automatic qualifier.
2. If still tied, the team with the best record in conference
matches against common opponents beginning at the top of the standings and working down the standings until the tie is broken shall be declared the automatic qualifier. Ties among teams at the top of the standings should be broken first to establish a ranked order.
3. If still tied, the team with the best total win/loss set record in conference matches against all conference opponents, including the matches between the tied teams, shall be declared the automatic qualifier.
4. If still tied, the team with the best win/loss set record against common conference opponents, excluding the team with which it is tied, beginning at the top of the standings and working down until the tie is broken shall be declared the automatic qualifier. Ties at the top of the standings should be broken first to establish a ranked order.
5. If still tied, the team with the highest point ratio in all conference matches shall be declared the automatic qualifier.
