Hawaii had sights on what was then the Pac-10. Stan Sheriff was in serious talks.
The bottom line, like in recruiting, just because you want someone doesn’t mean the other person wants you. The Pac-10/12 doesn’t want Hawaii.
The addition of UCSD makes for a good travel partner for UH.

24. So if the Big Sky values having an all-sports member in California … how do they justify allowing Cal Poly and Davis to keep football in the Big Sky and their other sports mostly in the Big West?

But still the big West is perfect for Hawaii. Especially in baseball, soccer and basketball. Womens Volleyball is what we brought to the party. Also don’t we not have to pay subsidies to the newbies? Hate to hear hope about Pac 12. That ain’t going to happen ever.

UH has to be happy to be in the Mountain West in football and the Big West for most of the other sports. I just wish the UHAD spent more time promoting their success in other sports such as women’s water polo. I am waiting for softball to get back to where they were four years ago. And there’s reason to feel baseball will be making some noise this coming season

Why should Cal Poly have more rights than Sac State in this regard? Conference composition should make it easy for pairs to host matches like Sac State and Davis. To allow politics to take precedence over the convenience of road travel for teams is just flabbergasting.

I don’t think that PAC12 would ever include Hawaii as there is no potential partner here. PAC12 has convenient partners for all its teams. Even Utah and Colorado are not that far apart that they would need a day separation for travel.

25. agree. remember talking to Shoji about it, how they will never host again, at least for the regional, because of how the seeding dictates things.
26. not happening. but funny you should say Wild Wild West. in 1987 when the PCAA was changing names Long Beach State AD John Kasser suggested Wild West during a media day luncheon … back when they had such things for volleyball.
27. no idea

Doesn’t the organizer understand that the best songs to sing are from the seventies and eighties?

e.g. Scandal’s “The Warrior”, or Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”.

There are a whole bunch of people in the arena who know all the lyrics to any Journey song.

Somebody is messing up a fun segment by poor song selection.

so something at the bottom of the list/rpi joins and something at the bottom of D2 joins

i think 2013 will be the relative last time na wahine hosts – and they already blew it with that. sorry to say. even if na wahine went undefeated all preseason and conference unless theyve beaten several ranked teams besides ucla would they then be able to entertain the idea of hosting. big west having bakersfield and ucsd in? only the aq is going to the big dance, forget at-large. conference rpi/sos too low worse than riverside and fullerton is at.

Actually that is exactly what happened. After UCSD students approved a referendum in 2016 to raise student athletic fees to support a move-up to Division 1, contingent upon receiving an invitation from the Big West, UCSD’s administration approached the conference about joining. That led to an initial polling of the nine current Big West members in April 2017 in which the four CSU chancellors voted as a block against adding UCSD, causing the proposal to fail (a minimum of seven yes votes were needed for passage). Here is the reason, as explained by UCSD’s chancellor Pradeep Khosla in a May 2017 article in the San Diego Union Tribune:

“If you look at the (Big West vote), I’m told, the UC chancellors voted yes and the Cal State chancellors voted no. And what I’m given to understand is that the Cal State leaders believe that Cal State Bakersfield should be admitted if UC San Diego is voted in. I’m also told that, in the past, Bakersfield’s request to be admitted into the Big West was not approved.

“I’m a pretty egalitarian, inclusive guy. My view is let both institutions be admitted. We are not doing this for the edification of the chancellor or the institution. We are doing this for these young men and women who are students. It’s not like we are going to make millions and millions of dollars. All of these campuses are not in big TV viewing areas.”

So UCSD got behind adding CSU Bakersfield, to make the CSU chancellors happy and preserve the voting balance between the UC and CSU schools in the conference. Another expansion vote was taken by the current Big West members two weeks ago and, lo and behold, this time around support was unanimous because both UCSD and CSU Bakersfield were included — i.e. because the pot was sweetened for the CSU members.

The possibility of Sac State joining the Big West has been discussed for years on the Big West and CSNBBS Conference Realignment message boards. The conventional wisdom is that Sac State hasn’t seriously pursued this because the school would have no place to put its football team if it left the Big Sky. Apparently the Big Sky values having an all-sports member in California for recruiting and visibility reasons, and so is not willing to give Sac State the same football-only membership deal that it’s given UC Davis and Cal Poly. Otherwise Sac State would have moved its non-football sports to the Big West long ago.
