Congrats to Tita Akiu.

From UH:
Former Hawaii libero Reyn “Tita” Akiu is one of 17 players to be invited by the U.S. Women’s National Team to participate in a spring training block held from Saturday to March 23 at the American Sports Center in Anaheim, Calif., where the national teams train.

All 17 athletes will be evaluated for additional training this summer with the full U.S. Women’s National Team with the opportunity to make international rosters including the Pan American Games and Pan American Cup.

Akiu is one of two liberos to be invited along with Justine Wong-Orantes (Nebraska). Akiu is one of five who participated in the recent U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryout held March 1-3 in Colorado Springs. Akiu also is one of five players who have exhausted their collegiate eligibility following the 2018 season.

Congrats to Tita! It would be great if she could make the Pan Cup Roster.

Re: Comments from the last post. Curious, are you, Cindy, not seeing changes in the top 3 flights or is this coming from Hall?

From what I saw in the Pepperdine match, Huddleston was having trouble reading the Pepperdine defense. Her calls to Maglio were late, wrong or non-existent. The miscommunication was difficult to watch at times. I think the issue is they do not play well together. Maybe they would play better apart?

Huddleston lacks the experience, in my opinion, to play at the top flights. Physically she is capable, but it is her experience or confidence that is an issue. I think you take another top player (Martin or Ozee for example) and they would struggle as well (but maybe they connect better than H and M). Put Maglio with a stronger player and she will do the Maglio things we have seen her do in the past.

Did I miss what type of ankle injury took Austin out for the rest of the season? Read one of the articles out there but wasn’t specific so just thought I’d ask. Also did I miss this piece of information too? BYU’s setter dislocated his ankle couple weeks back and is out for the rest of the season as well?

    Way to go Tita!

Congratulations, Tita! She beat out a bunch of talented liberos including BYU’s Mary Lake. Very impressive!

As much as Bailey is probably ready to move on from volleyball, I believe she graduates from Utah this spring/summer, and comes home to play one season for her “sports hero”, calabash aunty/cousin, former club coach. Possibly plays beach to pay for the rest of her schooling.

Wil injured his foot during a collision with Middle Blocker. Austin injured is ankle during a rally in the third set of the Penn State match while pursuing a ball near the pole. Tough breaks for two local boys doing well for their respective teams. Haven’t heard about Wil’s, but Austin’s was a season ending injury.

    Wow. Irvine swept by Concordia-Irvine.

    7. UCI went with their freshman setter Garcia for some reason. That’s who they went with in the loss to BYU. When they used Dante the second night they beat the Cougars.
3rd loss in 4 matches for UCI. Go figure.
As for Matautia, my understanding is in pursuit of the ball (3-3 in Set 3) he went for a kick-save and landed awkwardly.
Wil Stanley out with ankle injury for BYU. Hurt in Set 3 second night at Stanford. Cougars lost that match a night after they beat the Cardinal with Stanley playing the whole match. Tonight’s match at BYU against UCLA will be interesting.
IMHO, would not be a surprise if Pepperdine finishes out as the MPSF champ.
    5. Interesting that you should mention Choy. She no longer is on the Utah roster. UH does need a second setter for 2019. hmmm
As for her playing beach, and being on scholarship, think that’s a reach.

My bad, I think Choy will be an incoming Senior wherever she goes.

I understand she will be graduating from Utah(get her degree) this year so her obligation to Utah will be fulfilled. If she does not have any plan to live in Utah nor pursue a master, there is no reason for her to continue to attend school there.

Maybe coming home and playing one year in front of family and friends is appealing to her. Or she could move on, get married and start a family.

The fact the she is not playing at all this spring kind of indicates that she is probably not going back. You don’t get excused from spring practices for no reason. Everybody need to be at spring practice…..especially the setter(the quarterback) of the team.

I do hope Bailey comes home. However, she has yet to put her name in the transfer portal so that could mean that she is unsure of her plans for the future as of now.

So, this weekend’s games won’t have the band or cheerleaders? Or will the Alumni band be there?

  13. Cindy Luis March 14, 2019 11:43 am

    12. they don’t have an alumni band.
They don’t travel the entire band or cheerleading group so there should be enough at the arena.

  14. jm2375 March 14, 2019 12:01 pm

The alumni band was at the King game last week.

  15. Cindy Luis March 14, 2019 2:39 pm

    14. I didn’t know the alumni band was in the arena. I’ve only seen them at homecoming FB games.
