Warriors hire defensive intern

Nanumi Lolohea, who was Garden City Junior College’s linebackers coach this past season, has been hired as a UH intern for defense.

He also was linebackers coach for three seasons at Jasper (Texas) High and graduate for two years at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.

Earlier, UH confirmed that Billy Ray Stutzmann, a former UH and Saint Louis School wideout, was hired as an intern for offense.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Regarding the basketball scandal at Alabama, Duke, Kentucky, Michigan State, North Carolina et al, the NCAA said in a positive statement that “These allegations, if true, point to systematic failures that must be fixed and fixed now if we want college sports in America.”

I guess the NCAA will hit UH again. (sarcastic)

The NCAA needs to pay players after they leave college based on performance and money generated by the team.

  7. kev-1 February 24, 2018 12:26 pm

For those of you that think the current NCAA scandal will lead to trouble for the big college bball programs, don’t hold your breath.

Fear not, individuals will take the fall here and the favored programs will sell the perception that they had no idea this was going on. People will buy it and the corruption will continue.

Hey, at least these guys weren’t accepting used ipad or cruising around in a boosters old mercedes.

The players should be paid since the colleges and the NCAA make millions from their services. Also, the NBA and NFL should pay the players or colleges since college serves as a farm system for the two professional leagues.

  9. H-Man February 24, 2018 1:45 pm

If that’s the case, just drop all pretenses about being a student-athlete. Make going to class optional. Just play sports like a paid professional.

  10. kev-1 February 24, 2018 1:53 pm

College athletes should not be paid, period.

  11. islandman February 24, 2018 4:43 pm

It’s a farce that the major college basketball and football players shouldn’t be paid, As it is they are being paid anyway to a certain extent.

  12. H-Man February 24, 2018 5:04 pm

Another option would have the NFL develop their own minor league just like baseball. Basketball has a player developmental league. So for football, a prep player can choose to go in an NFL prep draft or go to college. In college you play for tuition, room and board and a stipend.

  13. kev-1 February 24, 2018 5:56 pm

What came first? College football teams or a college education? Are we really going to advocate athletes going to college as a profession? So athletes should get paid to play a college sport and walk away with a degree AND earnings when they’re done while every other college student walks away with a college debt? Gimme a break.

  14. What? February 24, 2018 9:46 pm

Some of the major programs will get punished by the NCAA. But, the blue blood programs will never be punished. The NCAA will not let that happen. There is just too much money involved. Why would they destroy their perpetual ATM cash machine?

One change that I would like to see is to change the status of the NCAA from non-profit to a for profit organization. Tax them like any other for profit business.

    13. Only the exceptional ones are rewarded with scholarships. The academic students also benefit from academic scholarships. What you don’t acknowledge are medical retirements for college football athletes or long term effects of concussions, knee and shoulder problems. There are long term adverse effects of playing contact sports like football.

Mr. Tsai, are BRS and Lolohea on paid or unpaid internships?

  19. islandman February 25, 2018 8:19 am

Good points by posters. Some players do get scholarships.
Regarding the NCAA, its President Mark Emmert earned $1.8 million for 2013,

  20. kev-1 February 25, 2018 8:56 am

    15. Sure there are both academic and athletic scholarships, and that’s fair. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be scholarships. You raise good points about injuries. Maybe there should be an NCAA funded insurance policy for athletes. Instead of paying the athletes, the NCAA can pay premiums, free to student athletes.

Former UH football players may be due “back pay” for the cost of attendance they did not receive for the period 2010 to 2017.

Women’s Water Polo gets little attention from the SA. Small article on back page. Hawaii’s Water Polo team, ranked #5, is 11-2 after beating #6 Arizona State today 10-8. Their two losses are to Cal and UCLA. They dropped their match to #4 UCLA on Saturday 8-9.
