UH football gains mental edge

Woody Blevins has officially joined the UH football coaching staff as an intern/quality-control coach. His hiring was approved on Friday.

Blevins spent the previous seven seasons at Northern Colorado, ascending from volunteer to graduate assistant to full-time assistant coach to special teams coordinator/cornerbacks coach. He also has held the title of “mental edge,” the UNC’s sports psychology director.

“It was hard and it was easy,” Blevins said of leaving UNC. “It was hard because I love my players and I’d been there for over seven years,” Blevins said. “I really grew up there (as a coach). I couldn’t be more thankful for Coach (Earnest) Collins. … However, it was easy because I knew the values here (at UH) aligned with mine. And if I can use one word to describe this opportunity, it’s gratitude. I couldn’t be more thankful.

In accepting the UH job, Blevins said, he and his wife felt “it was time to change it up. My wife and I had been prepared. My mother-in-law is from here. She went to Punahou. The stars aligned. I couldn’t turn it down.”

Blevins had followed UH assistant coach Jacob Yoro, who had coached the Cal Poly defensive backs in 2015 and 2016. Northern Colorado and Cal Poly are football members of the Big Sky Conference. “I watched his players and tried to find out how he taught because I thought he did a great job,” Blevins said of Yoro.

Blevins said he also “sought out Coach (Nick) Rolovich because I really believe in what he represents.”

Would like to see Hawaii get some kind of full time behavioral health coach. With the exception of the June Jones years, Hawaii football seems to have a difficult time getting to that proverbial next level.

Maybe first of its kind? A coach who knows X’s and O’s in addition to psychology/psychiatry/mental health/winning. Maybe Hawaii sports first 30 For 30.

    Welcome Woody!

Who is going to the UNLV road game this year on Nov 16; I just purchased a block of 300 seats behind our Warrior bench 10-21 rows up & had to make a large $6K deposit. Let me know if you want to secure your seats (near the aisle or row 21 right below the concourse with easy access to restrooms/concessions). tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

possible that Coach Woody can serve as the Athletics Department “quality control” coach for all UH sports or is that asking too much?

his expertise to help all players

new position on AD Matlin’s staff — yes — no?

Still trying to figure out was a quality control coach is responsible for.

#7 … controlling the quality, of course.

So does that mean if we don’t like the quality of what we see on the field we should blame him? Geez! And to think all this time people have blamed the HC or coordinators.

Don’t make fun of that position. Many have came thru the ranks of coaching being a quality control coach. You just don’t hear of them because its not a prestigious position like OC or DC.

The best OL coach every coached at UH was a quality control coach before coming to UH. You may have heard of Mike Cavanaugh.

Famous QC coaches you may have heard of?
Try Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan and Jon Gruden.
Maybe Woody Blevins will be famous down the road.

BTW…QC coaches assist in game prep, break down films and do many things to help prep the team to practice. Without QC coaches, our position coaches may have to take up some of the stuff they do. Having a QC coach will allow the position coaches to spend more time coaches and less time do other stuff.
