Comments on: Dick Tomey was a coach, and not just of football players

During his early seasons at UH, Coach Tomey was invited by the president Ryan M of the student chapter of AMA ( Am. Mktg Assoc.) to come to a room in the old BusAd building and review that week’s game highlight’s. Coach would lug in his projector and the spliced -by- hand film strips (no video or e-editing then) and go thru the highs and lows. He was always very candid, and honest in his comments, and very patient with those of us students who never had any formal experience in playing or practicing the game, especially at the college or higher level. He broke down the game into it’s basics and was an excellent public speaker. The then ASUH president Chuck Norwood usually showed up and once asked Coach about the next opponent, San Jose State. Tomey starts out drawing some o’s (for UH on offense) and some v’s for SJS on defense. Then he draws a HUGE V in the middle.

Here was a coach who made the local boys proud to put on a Rainbow football uniform and represent.
