Local TV sports pioneer

Yes, kids, there was a time when big tackles were not Katooshes and you couldn’t watch your high school volleyball team’s matches on the wide screen in your living room.

Local TV programming? That was “Let’s Go Fishing,” “Hawaiian Moving Company” and occasional Andy Bumatai specials.

And then Mitzi Lehano’s vision became a reality. Now, OC 16 is so synonymous with high schools sports that it still uses that title even when it is no longer on channel 16. (It is expected to return to that channel this summer, but that’s a topic for another day.)

While many deserve credit, too, Lehano was the driving force in bringing prep sports into our homes.

Lehano recently retired as vice-president/programming at Charter Communications (Spectrum).

She deserve praise for her hard work, leadership and, well, being a really nice person.

Let’s hope that local programming will still be center stage for Spectrum.
Off Topic..but got my “box” for my living room and bedroom..now got to get one for the other bedrooms and the patio….used to get my tv for my monthly charge…now got to tack on the individual charge for the other converter boxes if I or my family want to watch in the other rooms.
Seems like some company is doing the Tahitian dance on my backside…just saying..
    pau rant fo da day.

I got my cable box and I had trouble hooking it up…Called the help number and after spending an hour or so with someone in the Philippines, she determined that the box was the problem and cited that the new boxes were having this problem. What the Heck?? What if we are not able to hook up with Spectrum through their boxes????

    Youtube had a spectrum help
video. I hooked it up also looking at the diagrams that came with the box and i also hooked it up with the VCR, although i don’t use the recorder.
It didn’t work so good so i called the Spectrum number that they said to call. I got a good lady and we found out i had to reset the box by pulling out the power cord ,at least.

#2 bowwar: Suggest the next time you have an issue with Spectrum and reach a customer service rep in the Philippines or Caribbeans or anywhere else in the world, immediately (and politely) ask to speak to a rep in Hawaii. They will forward the call. From past experiences, I find there’s a world of difference in customer service when you actually speak to someone here as opposed to out of state.

Good thing NextEra , or whatever da name was, neva take over HEI. Could have been a a disaster. Monopolies are never a good thing!!!! On the other hand, Spectrum has competition, can always switch. On another front, I am not very confident on UH football, optimistic but negative based on last year’s O. As I have said before, we gonna have to score 40+ pts a game to have a winning record. “O” coaching is going to have to step up big time!! We’ll see.

Read someplace that Haw Tel is going to be sold to some mainland company i think.

NorthShoreFan — I quit Spectrum internet this month so my Road Runner email account should fail soon. Use my gmail one: stevem.hnl

My mom has a digital box with HDMI output, so with a HDMI amplified splitter and long HDMI cable (total around $50 at Best Buy), I can watch the same channel on a different set. Separate channels on different TVs need the box, though.

Steve M .. the thing I’m very disappointed with is the fact that my home was wired for tv in every room. All this for the monthly billing. Now I have to get a box for every room at a cost of $8.45 per month. Do the math and it’s 4 X added to my monthly cable billing. Same amount of tv’s but now costing more per month. Legal extortion. Asked why there wasn’t a “box” that could be installed at the point of entry to the house and didn’t get a very cohesive answer.

    and now back to football…

With Athlon Sports publishing its preseason All-Conference picks, there is certainly a fair amount of “I’ll show you” motivation. Tavai and Ursua 2nd team, Farris and Eli, third team and Matautia fourth team there is a lot of room for a few more names and upward move for post season. Coaches Batoon, Banker, Weber, Logo et al have their work cut out for them. I fully expect the Warriors to be a low preseason pick in conference and nationally due to the number of new faces. The key here is how many of the new recruits and in particular JC guys ramp it up-the other key will be the strides some of the younger guys and red shirts make. This season in my mind will be uniques given the coaching changes and roster turnover-I’m optimistic. Go Warriors

Oh. man, I loved those Andy Bumatai specials.

What did Bumatai have on top of his car?

Motorists kept pointing at it and Andy would confuse the warning as hosannas for his rising career.

I was so psyched when Andy Bumatai made a guest appearance on “Riptide”.

I remember buying a frozen burrito and “The Sporting News” from that old convenience store across from the Kaimuki Public Library and telling the cashier about it.

    “All in the Ohana”?

Good-natured cultural appropriation. I get into arguments with my young Hawaiian activist friend at work about this show all the time.

Me: “Stop comparing this to “Moana”. Bumatai was born here.”
    Her: “But he’s not Hawaiian.”

It’s so great to come across the occasional millenial who cares about things.

She hates being called a neo-hippie.

I used to watch the “Hawaiian Moving Company”.

    Disco-dancing lessons.

I miss the old Michael W. Perry.

Don’t be an idiot and get Hawaiian Tel cable.

It’s highly inconvenient not having OC-12.

The Padres are five-and-a-half games behind first place.

No Fox Sports San Diego either.

Unfortunately, I have no choice in the local cable matter. The building I live in only allows for Spectrum. It’s quite BS though when I’m paying $165/month for services and other people I know who also have Spectrum are paying half that amount for the same services and sometimes even more features. If I had a choice, I’d switch to Hawaiian Tel to be honest

    11. Maddog correct,UH is #116 in one preseason ranking. Only St Jose is lower.

cappie, Hawaiian Tel is going to be merged/sold to Cincinnati Bell. So any new name ? Hawaiian Bell ? How come this is okay but not the HECO sale thing ? They will maintain the Hawaiian Tel brand etc.
Is that place across Kaimuki Library, now the FCU and the kidney dialysis place ? Take care of your kidneys.

Does anyone know if smart TVs need the box too?
