Morris inherited a program in disarray and brought the Mustangs back to a 7-5 record and a bowl game in his third year. Morris had to overcome numerous problems, including poor recruiting and the lack of Texas high school players (the most out-of-state players of all DI schools in Texas) on the roster. High School coaches in Texas said that they never saw any SMU coaches recruiting during the previous coaching regime (June Jones). This was Morris’ most posing challenge
when he took over at SMU and righted the ship. Morris coached high school ball for 15 years in Texas, before becoming a college assistant.

Not a criticism of Jones, just stating the facts. He will always be revered in Hawaii due to the 2007 Sugar Bowl appearance.

He is a proven quality, people in the know, well, they know. Sometimes either burnout or they might be in different learning curves, or incompatible systems, effectuates the situation.

Just look at folks like Bill Belicheck, Pete Carroll, Dick Vermile, all were asked to leave positions at some point. The thing about sports, is that at some point, stay long enough, and you will get burned….
