Men’s basketball has never been popular in Hawaii.

When I used to be a produce clerk at Star-Kahala, John Gabriel came into our store.

I told a fellow worker, “Hey, it’s John Gabriel.”

He answered, “Who is John Gabriel.”

I went into the break-room and nobody knew who I was talking about.

At this point, he was an alumnus, not an active player, but still.

AWESOME! I hope one of the Centers turns out to be a Tony Maroney type player. A double double machine, and a good inside presence on defense, something we haven’t had for a while.

We’ll see how good these guys are. I hope they are more like Stephan Jankovic rather than Rogue Harris. We can use some Canadian players too, for the future. We’ve had some good ones in the past.

1) Funny story H-Man. I used to own a small retail business in town back in the 90’s and Gerry Holmes (7 footer) used to come in all the time (he had to duck his head at the door!) and one time he was in the store and this other customer said in heavy pigeon English: “Whoa! Braddah! How tall you?!”…we all just started laughing…lol….

Many, many, many years ago, I asked Tommy Barer in front of the Student Center, “How’s the air up there?” He paused for a moment then replied, “You’ll never know.” 6-4, 6-5 seems real tall next to us shrimps, but when you stand next to a 7-footer, it’s simply mind-boggling.
