Connor, unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend the Wahine Green vs. White scrimmage last night. Jason Kaneshiro has transitioned over to cover women’s hoops for us, though I’ll still be helping here and there. However, having watched a few practices, I’ve made a few observations.
>> Freshman Sarah Toeaina is poised to make an instant impact with the way she’s aggressively attacked in practices.
>> Shawna Kuehu and Ashleigh Karaitiana will still be supplying much of the scoring for this team, kind of like how it was last season when Kamilah Jackson went out injured down the stretch.
>> Destiny King was said recently by Coach Beeman to be in the lead for the starting point guard job, but I fully expect Morgan Mason to take that back over very early in the season, if not by the season opener.
>> Shawlina Segovia is eager to finally play after sitting out last season, and I think she and Connie Morris will be taking the lead down low. Although Dalayna Sampton rebounded pretty well in the G&W scrimmage.

Negus was off from long distance on Saturday, but he’s had other days when he’s been lights out.

More than rust he was sidelined with a rib injury and just came back. That could be the problem. Anybody know?

What’s going on with NWC. I was expecting him to be a stat stuffer with assists, rebounds, steals, points and three point shooting. Is he still shaking off the rust from a redshirt year?

It’s great to see Fotu and Nevels playing so well, and some of the newcomers like Bobbit, Jankovic and Fleming starting to shine. I’m also impressed by how much Valdes and Thomas appear to have improved. Three concerns jump out at me from the numbers: Negus-Chan is struggling with his shooting touch, Jovanovic isn’t getting rebounds, and no one is consistently making assists but Filipovich. Of course it’s just one scrimmage and there’s a lot of practice time left for everyone to keep improving.
