first, a lot hinges on valdes’ eligibility which is still in the air. the ncaa has yet to determine whether he is good to go or not.

based on the premise that he is eligible then…

aaron valdes will not redshirt if he is able to play.

we now have many guards in camp, mostly shooting guards seven on paper.
manroop clair is a top candidate for redshirting. his game needs some improvement and physically he needs to add 15-20 lbs of muscle.

dyrbe enos and michael harper are both walk-ons and guards. rarely does it make any sense to redshirt a walkon. a walkon usually makes the team to facillitate practices. not unless he is a real eye opener will you want to redshirt a walkon. it just makes no sense. i know in the past other uh coaches did it…they are no longer on the job.

the jc guys coming in were all signed to compete for playing time and they should see the court. therefore, none would redshirt unless they have an injury.

we are not really stacked with bigs. we have two centers yes with dressler probably going to redshirt. other than that we have four forwards. what this means is that ozzie and fotu will not be redshirting. fotu and standhardinger are the 4’s with hauns and ozzie at the 3.

smallish swingmen could be jawato, spearman, and jefferson. but, most of their action will be at the 2. although privately, i am sure that the gibber hopes that one of them can help at the point. something he failed to address for this year. (yah, i can’t wait till next year when the sham gets to play.)

the only realistic redshirt candidates are roop especially if his nagging ankle won’t quiet down and dressler who could use more muscle and a little more quickness. the roster now only sports 15 guys. valdes is still in limbo. the longer it takes the more you worry that he is another who won’t get past the ncaa. so, to reiterate if valdes can go then he makes the roster as a valuable swing guy with size and hops, the ultimate matchup problem at either slot.

but, if he doesn’t clear then perhaps only one or none redshirt at all since we don’t have the numbers.

…I don’t hear that greenshirt term very often although I noted an “NCAA Official” using it in an Article… He seemed to be attributing the use and need for the color titles to ‘the media’ since the terms are not legislated by NCAA

Jade Vorster is Good Example…

So a grey shirt this next break December/January in Football gets spring & summer camps/ workouts to learn team systems / schemes…kind of a free semester that counts toward 2013… not sure when scholarships, room, board, meals kicks in, immediately or next fall… (but I think it’s immediate/spring semester); Greyshirts often enroll PART-TIME in the initial fall semester without athletic aid

I believe Orel Lev was counting last spring as a redshirt “year” (semester)….(RED = STOP as in Stop from Playing)

A Relatively New NCAA Term is Green Shirt which applies to High School Seniors who forego their spring (HS) semester to enroll in College Early (like a Head Start; Green= GO, as in GO Early)

I would love to redshirt Manroop Clair, but I think he would want to play right away and we may need him right away.

Ozren Pavlovic would also be a good redshirt candidate but I believe he is 21 years-old and if he is turning down pro contracts he would probably want to play right away.

I think Fotu is ready to play now and will only redshirt if he gets a major injury.

I think Valdes brings an element we need this year, so I wouldn’t redshirt him unless it’s academics.

IF Someone “Had to” Redshirt: BUT Also include my reasons i hope they get to play; ‘cos Most Players rather play, AND you improve the most & fastest by playing; unless your current skill level wouldn’t allow coach to get you on the court, or worse, an injury; i like the analogy of trading Fifth Years for First Years, but …

Dyrbe Enos: Good Candidate, But Can you imagine The CROWD NOISE every time he steps onto the Court and Provides Instant Offense, with the Crowd Roaring Louder with Each Successive Lay-up or Three? At Least until they get used to him as “The Next Miah”. I used to hear the crowd shouting for Pi’i Mins… because his shot is ‘so fast’ i think “Dyrbe Would Deliver”

Caleb Dressler: Probably One of “The Best” candidates for redshirting ‘cos coach likes to redshirt freshmen AND the Team is SO DEEP at Bigs that he would probably start out with 10-20 More mpg next year….but he’s also got excellent skills and hits his shots as good as ANY Big Man we’ve had — i saw Julian Sensley passing HIM (CD) the ball for a Summer League Game-Tying Shot — He Earned That Much Trust & Confidence…Of Course he Nailed it…

Manroop Clair: Rather see him playing and “Bombing” and especially ‘actually helping as a true point guard’ but Worry a little that his ‘frequent’ re-injuries might be a current “physical” limitation, that he’s already pushing his body to the point that he needs to strengthen it before he can take it to the next level.

Michael Harper: Redshirt? Particularly to develop better point skills. His “Aussie Mum” would enjoy the game highlights even more than the practice highlights and he’s already the fastest and most agile on the team (as measured by the coaches), plus he shoots and drives lights out… Prefer: Get him more PT!

Aaron Valdes: With his physical skills, a strong defensive player and high flyer could help neutralize Big West guards/wings … redshirt only for academic reasons (if really needed).

Ozren Pavlovic: Actually only listed him for completeness and discussion sake because he was called out above and we Americans think Euros lack toughness — i’ve seen him battling in the paint and harassing our more senior Bigs as good as anybody — So i think Already “Good Body and Physical Skills” and Also (Really) Shoots Lights Out…

Isaac Fotu: Only IF Injured — He’s already ‘The Real Deal’ — you don’t sit players that can help you WIN games today; and his playing “could” also help signing other NZ/Aussie Stars who know him… like Taj Webster, Former UH Star Tony’s son, who ‘verballed’ to a ‘lesser’ (to me) and further away from home program (i’m pretty sure there are No Direct Flights from NZ/AUS to Washington State).

We’ll See … Maybe ought to “Track Progress” of Redshirts, too with the National and UH “Retention Trend”

I could see Gib with his Creativity (Late Game Offensive-Defensive Substitutions, MCAS, Beach Camp Training, etc.) throwing the opposition for quick loops by platooning ten (or more) players … this team looks very capable and very deep — the platoon option throws fresh legs at them in waves — and ALL our players can shoot/score, so may have little drop off when running fresh legs against tired starters — most other teams will be limited to 7-8 players… IF opposition is similar to how we were last year, several on floor could not score at will…

MUCH Interest and Activity … Seems to be growing into a Buzzzzz….
