So, that would leave the 2 more scholarships to offer.

Gib is right, that is the weakness with this team, the Bigs. Guys who will protect the rim. He seems pretty confident they will sign a good defender and perhaps a scorer at wing, whomever the best available athletes…i.e, would have to be a Good Big…even this late, I am sure, a role player would be fine, someone long athletic, and protect the paint, then UH MBB can be solid next year.

Essentially, yes. I’m not sure that policy applies to every school, but Arnold has been consistent about that when it comes to players who aren’t actually signed to scholarships during the signing periods.

Tyler Harville was not mentioned as he didn’t sign; he will be a preferred walk-on. Coach Arnold can’t talk about him until he’s enrolled in the UH system.

He said that those big schools make money off their trips for road games, and that other schools can offer a lot more money to the visiting teams than Hawaii can. That coupled with the before/after prep/jet lag of the trip and the earlier conference starts make it difficult for bigger named schools to come here. He said some coaches like to use the Hawaii trip/experience for recruiting and a once in a lifetime trip for their players, but said normally money is the big factor why more people don’t come out here.

I only heard portions of the interview but I came in while he was talking about the difficulties of scheduling and while he too would like to see bigger name opponents on the home schedule there were many things going against it. He talked about them but I missed it. Do you recall what was said on the difficulty of bringing teams here?

Brian, their was no mention about the two players UH signed one was Harvil and I did not get the other players name. Can you comment on this? Any info on them?

I don’t know if it is Ben Jay’s doing. Remember he had a bunch of coaches whose contracts were due for extension. Gib, Ben stated, was just a matter of time, and a done deal. Gib has the right attitude, let the agent representing him do the negotiating, and Gib concentrate on recruiting and coaching.
Well, that is how it goes at UH Manoa. UH academics and athletics, how things are done, in timely matter, i.e, Ching complex, field, have to step up to the 21st century.
