Wahine picked to win Big West, practice opens, Castello on staff

a little surprised by the poll but …. think i would have flopped UH and SLO

2017 Big West Women’s Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll
1. Hawai’i (6) – 78
2. Cal Poly (2) – 71
3. Long Beach State (1) – 65
4. UC Santa Barbara – 49
5. UC Irvine – 41
6. UC Davis – 39

First practice got under way right at 1 p.m. they are scheduled to go to 4 p.m. then come back for 7-10 p.m. Getting them in their game-time mode already.
Ah Mow-Santos was pretty adamant about being in shape/not being in shape, stressing it wasn’t fair to teammates and to themselves if they weren’t.

don’t ask how they look. they are in drills not scrimmage mode.
couple of players not cleared yet
Greeley is fine with her shoulder but has a back issue
Lipscomb, who hasn’t touched a ball in four months (ankle) was cleared to do her testing and may get worked into drills later today.
Guinasso not cleared but was expected back maybe by tomorrow.
Burns out on the bike and not in drills.
Arden Misraje has moved over to beach.

Paperwork on Nick Castello (Hawaii libero 2011-12) cleared this morning. he is the new volunteer assistant. back after a few years playing overseas.

The Wahine really miss having a terminator opposite. Just hoping one emerges. Good luck to the Wahine for the coming season.

Woohoo excited for the new season & new era. There was a great write up on the Shoji family on midweek, check it out if you have a chance, and great write up by CL in todays paper as well! Saw the sports portion of the news, pretty classic interview by RAMS, talking about practice being in gym 1, she is a no non-sense type of person, the girls are gonna get their butts kicked in a good way! haha. Looking forward to this season!

    5. Nothing wrong with using RAMS. It is convenient and I’ll continue to use it as it is not a pejorative, not in poor taste, not uncivil, and doesn’t violate the Terms of Service. In an open forum, sometimes people have to tolerate things they don’t like or disagree with. There are things I don’t like on here from others but if not violative of the rules, that’s too bad for me. Plus there is something anti-1st Amendment with expecting people to conform to using one name for the coach versus another name. And people didn’t have any major issue with using TMO for Tai Manu-Olevao, so I am perplexed by the issue with RAMS. I’ll probably refer to the Robyn/Angelica brain trust as RAMSAL, because saves time typing both names on my tablet.

Rabbit’s comment is a timely one that the NCAA is trying to address:

All the pre-season polls should be taken with a grain of salt. Votes are largely based on last year’s polls/recruits/graduations and zero performance data for this year. Polling should start after the first three weeks of play when there is current year data available to evaluate (although anecdotally, head coaches don’t take much time or perform much analysis when voting), but these polls are really a marketing and publicity tool and thus will continue.

    new thread up
thanks for all the help with polls and other things. Got busy with some stuff.

Agree nothing wrong with RAMS but I’d prefer that we don’t. others have requested as well.

Re: summer school. Not all the players are in class.
Not sure why there is a question about “how can they do school work?”
Two-a-days have always opened during last week of summer school.
The only change this year is that practice used to go 6-9 and 2-5. But players also used to leave early to get to morning class. Ah Mow-Santos wanted everyone there for the 3-hour sessions, which is part of the reason it got moved to afternoon. And they went with evening session in part to get used to game time, which is traditionally 7 p.m.

Only summer school issue today was for Okino. she missed part of first session.
