Yet another busy week, just add water (polo)

And you thought last week was busy around UH’s lower campus.

While the UH basketball teams begin their runs in the Big West tournament in California (the men on Thursday and the women on Friday), the on-campus schedule remains packed, including visits by the No. 1 ranked water polo team and the lone undefeated team remaining in Division I softball.

The fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine water polo team (12-3) returns to the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex for its first home match since Jan. 26 to face No. 1 USC on Saturday. Aside from pitting two top-five teams, the match gained considerable notoriety on Tuesday when former USC coach Jovan Vavic was arrested in Waikiki as part of a sweeping FBI probe into college admissions fraud. The Trojans (19-0) won their sixth national championship and second in three years last season but will stunningly be under new leadership this week.

The UH softball team (16-7) opens the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic on Wednesday. The field includes No. 4 Alabama (25-0), the only team in Division I yet to suffer a loss. The Wahine and Crimson Tide meet Friday and Saturday.

The second-ranked UH men’s volleyball team is back in the Stan Sheriff Center for a second straight weekend for Big West matches with No. 12 Cal State Northridge on Friday and Saturday.

Baseball opens a four game series with Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium.

The action extends to Waikiki with the Rainbow Wahine beach volleyball team hosting the two-day Heineken Hawaii Invitational at Queen’s Beach.
