Hitchcock throws one-hitter for Puerto Rico

Rainbow Wahine junior Brittany Hitchcock held Ecuador to one hit in Puerto Rico’s 7-0 win in five innings on Sunday in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

Hitchcock struck out seven and walked none in the complete-game victory. She retired the first 13 batters she faced before giving up a one-out single in the top of the fifth inning.

Puerto Rico improved to 3-0 in the round-robin Pool E and faces Italy on Monday.

Australia, which features five former UH players, recovered from a loss to Mexico on Friday to go 2-1 in Pool C and takes on the Philippines on Monday.


Kaia Parnaby took the loss in a duel with former Arizona State All-American Dallas Escobedo in the game against Mexico despite striking out 11 over eight innings. She also contributed a clean inning in Australia’s four-inning no-hitter in a 13-0 win over Serbia on Sunday.

The U.S. went 3-0 in the round-robin portion of the tournament, outscoring Brazil, Austria and Israel 43-0. Two-time defending world champion Japan is 2-0.
