Another rare start

Last season’s Hawaii soccer team set plenty of milestones during its nonconference season, in which it went 7-1-1.

By going 2-0 through the season-opening Ohana Outrigger Resorts Shootout, the 2017 Rainbow Wahine are, for now, keeping the pace. The last time they were 2-0 was 2007, which makes sense when you consider that was the last season they won their season opener, until Friday’s win over Utah Valley.

Here were UH’s goals against UVU, including the winner by Sarah Lau.

And here was Raisa Strom-Okimoto’s winning goal from Sunday night’s 2-1 overtime win over Fairfield. Check out Leialoha Medeiros’ bicycle kick attempt, which (inadvertently) led to the open shot for Strom-Okimoto.

Strom-Okimoto had a good shot at Big West Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, but that went to UC Santa Barbara’s Amanda Ball, who has three goals to RSO’s two.

The Aiea High product said of the Fairfield game, “It was kind of frustrating at the beginning, we didn’t play to our full potential. But toward the last 10 minutes and overtime we got it together, started playing our game … we got a lot more shots off and a lot more opportunities.”

Here’s UH’s goal scorers (with career count) so far:
Raisa Strom-Okimoto, 2 (9 career)
Sonest Furtado, 1 (8 career)
Sarah Lau, 1 (4 career)

And assists:
Izzy Deutsch, 1 (1 career)
Kiri Dale, 1 (1 career)
Mikaelah Johnson-Griggs, 1 (1 career)

Also: UH freshman defender Cristina Drossos was to get an MRI Monday night to assess the damage to her knee from late in the game against Fairfield. Coach Michele Nagamine expressed doubt after the game that Drossos, who’d played every minute of both games to that point, will be back anytime soon.

“She got taken out. It was a pretty blatant foul,” Nagamine said. “It was pretty brutal. … I don’t think we’re going to have her for a while, to be honest.”

The Wahine open their next tournament, the Outrigger Soccer Classic, at 7 p.m. Thursday against Pacific of the West Coast Conference.

Nice try by Medeiros. It’s one of those shots you dream about making. She did appear to deflect it to Strom-Okimoto in the clip, so who no assist?

Pretty sick bicycle attempt by Medeiros. Just missed it by a fraction of a second!!

    Hey Duster,

Good question. As explained to me by UH soccer SID Nick Heidelberger, “The only times you get an assist from a missed shot is if it deflects off the post/crossbar or the goalkeeper and leads directly to a shot and goal. So no assist (on the Medeiros play) because it was not a pass.”
