Cindy the question regarding JC transfers was about women’s volleyball. How does it work? Is there a signing date for Letter of intent? How are scholarships awarded? Is there a site that keeps track or explains the process?

  2. Cindy Luis February 15, 2019 5:59 pm

    1. Let’s take Annie Mitchem as an example. As long as they have shown progress towards a degree and are a junior, they can play right away.
There is no NLI date. They sign a scholarship agreement. If they are on scholarship All scholarships in women’s volleyball are full rides. Up to the coach to decide who gets one.
Not sure if that answers your question

    @Hi5Ho Not for me

    4. UH is fully funded at 6. They can split as they see fit.

  10. Lori February 15, 2019 10:54 pm

I am a bit concerned in that UH doesn’t seem to be playing teams that will challenge them and then when it comes to the big games, they won’t be battle tested. Other than Stanford and USC, they really haven’t played anyone of note. I know it is difficult to get teams to come to Hawaii to play but just a bit concerning. I totally hope that I am wrong but that was the one thing people have said about the women teams in the past where the conference is so weak, they weren’t able to play and win in the post season. Now the men are playing a weak preseason, will it affect their play when it comes to conference play and beyond? I hope not. Just a thought.

  11. seewhy February 16, 2019 1:22 am

    10. UH will be tested in their upcoming matches against @ #3 UC Irvine (12-2) on Mar. 1 and 2, and in the Outriggers Hotels and Resorts Invintational against #12 Ball State (7-5) on Mar. 8 and #5 Pepperdine (8-2) on Mar. 9.

  12. Lori February 16, 2019 7:34 am

My point is UH hasn’t played tough teams BEFORE the conference starts. UC Irvine has played six Top 20 teams before conference starts. They are battle tested before they start playing UH. And it appears UCLA has played a bunch of Top 20 teams before their conference starts. Therein lies the difference. UH plays tough teams within their conference, not BEFORE.

  13. 49ers Bloomers February 16, 2019 11:26 am

Playing lots of mediocre teams in the preseason helps teams the team make up for short off season conditioning and team chemistry

You don’t want your team to peak too early and tank close to NCAA selection period.

Look at Russ Rose, he packs a lot of 2 matches per day scheduling, with the likes of a Queens or Liberty or a Prarie View A&M

  14. Don February 16, 2019 1:50 pm

    12. No ‘big’ teams are willing to either come out to Hawaii or host Hawaii on the road. Imysurw Charlie tried to get a few MPSF teams to play UH before the conference matches, but some teams just don’t want to play Hawaii on the road or at home.

  15. Kahuna February 16, 2019 5:32 pm

Being “battle tested” doesn’t really make a team better. I think we can looked at Long Beach State in men’s basketball. They go on the road and play tons of body bag games against P 5 schools but UH is still able beat them and they are an average team at best.

Coaches like to use the battle tested label to give the team confidence that they can play with anyone but it will come down to who can execute better on game day not what you did against another team.

Anyway this team is filled with upperclassmen so all these guys have been thru the wars for 3 plus years. They are battle tested!

  16. Cindy Luis February 17, 2019 1:26 pm

Everyone is having a hard time scheduling with the split of the Big West and MPSF.They went from 22 league matches to 10. But it’s easier for mainland teams to do so. Hawaii only has so much money to bring teams out and they spend a lot already on the Warriors going to the mainland for Big West play.
    Hawaii is going to BYU
    13. not sure why you brought up women’s volleyball scheduling. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.
