Hawaii men’s basketball: Diamond Head Classic pairings announced, UH draws Ball State

The Rainbow Warriors will open against Ball State in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Dec. 22, ESPN Events announced today.

Depending on the outcome, the ‘Bows will face either UTEP or Washington.

The other first-round pairings are Houston against Portland, and Georgia Tech against Boise State.

Ball State returns eight letterwinners from a team that went 16-17 overall (6-12 in the Mid-American Conference). The Cardinals are touring Costa Rica this summer.

Sunday, Dec. 22:

10 a.m. — Houston vs. Portland (ESPNU)
Noon – Georgia Tech vs. Boise State (ESPNU)
4:30 p.m. — UTEP vs. Washington (ESPN2)
630 p.m. — Ball State vs. Hawaii (ESPN2)

Monday, Dec. 23:
11:30 a.m. — Semifinal No. 1 (ESPNU)
2 p.m. — Consolation No. 1 (ESPN2
6 p.m. — Semifinal No. 2 (ESPNU)
8:30 p.m. — Consolation No. 2 (ESPN2)


Wednesday, Dec. 25:
8:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. — Seventh-place game (ESPNU)
8:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. — Fifth-place game (ESPNU)
1:30 p.m. — Third-place game (ESPN2)
3:30 p.m. — Championship (ESPN2)

    They’re playing the third day on the 24th? Isn’t the Hawaii Bowl on the 24th? Don’t they usually play the last day on Christmas Day?

    Forget it, I just checked the Diamond Head Classic website and the last day is listed as being played on Christmas Day.

    So happy for Phil Handy. I knew something good would happen to him. I am going to miss being a Toronto Raptors fan. For the record, they were 3-1 after I lost my New Order cap and bought a Raptors cap at Pearlridge Lids. Rooting for the Lakers, how original. But that’s what I’m going to do.
