Wahine practice Day 2

The Rainbow Wahine gathered for practice on Thursday. / Photo by Cindy Luis

Don’t have complete details yet but next week’s Green-White Scrimmage will be open to the public. Believe it is next Friday, which is a state holiday.

Two practices 6-9 and 3-6. Pretty standard skills and drills, some with entire team, some broken down by position.

Two players still haven’t passed test. Not mentioning who due to HIPA.

Early observations
Angel Gaskin, a physical lefty opposite, will help immediately. Passes well from my limited viewing.

Considering Sarah Liva hasn’t played college volleyball since 2015 she is doing very well. Athletic and hits a heavy ball.

Reyn Akiu should be considered the front-runner at libero.

Not sure where Casey Castillo will play. She’s being looked at as MB and OH, and likely the backup right.

Faith Ma’afala has worked hard on her setting and connected pretty well on the slides today.

Appreciate the player updates. I will definitely attend the scrimmage.

Poor Casey….being moved around again. I just feel sorry for her. She has sacrificed a lot in the past with her moving around and not being able to master a position. I think this year should be the year she finally can play a position she concentrates on.

We have enough middles(Burns, Williams, Liva, Howling and maybe move Kamalei Krug into the middle). Let Casey play her OH2 spot and let the other middles battle it out.

If she’s better in the middle for the team why not try her there , afterall what’s best for the team is what matters. Casey wasn’t exactly much of an offensive threat from outside last year in most matches and it seems like Ross has really picked up her game.
switching back and forth for two positions isn’t that big a deal, Annie, Kendra and plenty of other players have done it in the past.

Really random but Nikki Taylor will be playing in the main draw of AVP Manhattan Beach as a wildcard from Hawaii next to UH alum Kristina Kam. Best of luck to them!!

Thank you for the report on Thursday’s practice. It sounds like they are moving quickly through the drills and much better prepared than last season. Would love to hear your thoughts on an a possible lineup after they start scrimmages.

    7. after five practices, hard to say. Big learning curve for the 2, as well as the three senior transfers who are learning a new system.
