UH will decline NIVC bid, itinerary, etc

Carrying over discussion from previous thread

Team leaves tonight on redeye to SFO (said earlier thought it was LAX). they then fly in morning to Sacramento and drive to Davis
Friday they will fly from Sacramento to John Wayne in Orange County. Sunday they drive to LAX and fly home.

Travel roster same as last time they went to mainland. Staying home are Sibley, Okino and Gong.

Anderson is already on the mainland and will meet up with team. She is doing Med School interviews.

As for the NIVC: was told this afternoon that UH will decline the bid. Several factors involved, including time away from school and cost. Travel cost maxed at $15,000 but Hawaii would spend more First round is Tues-Thurs Tough to get a team to Hawaii when the bids are announced Sunday night after the NCAA selection show.

If you’d like to read up on the NIVC, the link is below

https://www.womensnivc.com/event-info.html

my recap
>> Hawaii, finishing second in the Big West, would be an automatic berth in the NIVC.
Highlights from the site
>> A team that is offered an automatic berth by the NIVC shall be the team that is a.) the highest-finishing team in its conference’s regular-season standings, and b.) is then not selected for the NCAA Tournament
>> Factors that are not taken into consideration at any time during team selection are host bids, location of school, attendance history, ability to host, etc.
>> The NIVC will bracket similarly the NCAA tournament with an emphasis given to geographical pairings.

Missing school is a very valid reason to pass on the NIVC tournament. I did’t think of that.

  2. Warriorfan November 14, 2017 5:52 pm

Good decision this program deserves the ncaa tournament only, if the ncaa committee shafts the wahine, finish school enjoy the winter break and move on.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the wahine take care of business finish 20-7 and get an at large.

  3. islandman November 14, 2017 5:56 pm

I’m not an expert, but per the handbook, if UH travels, the max they would pay is $15,000 plus some per diem for travel for a travel party of 18. Anything above that is supposed to be covered by the NIVC.
If they host, they have to share in the net match revenue with the NIVC. If the do not travel, then they don’t pay the $15,000, i think.

let them play! let them play! let them play!

  5. Cindy Luis November 14, 2017 6:24 pm

    3. First off, they aren’t going to host.

Triple Crown would pay up to $15,000 for travel.

  6. Cindy Luis November 14, 2017 6:37 pm

The bad thing for the Big West is, if i’m reading it correctly, UH declining means that the conference forfeits the AQ and the Big West’s berth goes back into the pool for at-large.

  7. islandman November 14, 2017 6:42 pm

The $15.000 fee must be a new requirement ? I don’t see it in the handbook. The handbook only says the traveling school will be responsible for the first $15,000 of the travel costs.

  8. Cindy Luis November 14, 2017 6:54 pm

    7. yes, you’re right. just got clarification from UH.
it costs UH more than $15000 to travel and they weren’t sure if TC would pick up the difference.

  9. Cindy Luis November 14, 2017 7:03 pm

why i say they aren’t hosting … field announced on the 26th. first round on either the 28th or 29th. hard to get a team here in that short of notice. for argument’s sake … UH hosts on 29th, wins. Second round is Nov. 30 or Dec. 1. either UH would have to fly out the 30th and play on the the 1st or other team has to do that.
I do think Hawaii would make money for the event but it’s such a short turnaround from when the bids are announced.

  10. islandman November 14, 2017 7:20 pm

Thanks for the updates. Looking at the internet and someone on this blog ? mentioned even the men’s NIT basketball tourney is not what it used to be as far as prestige.

  11. iceebear November 14, 2017 9:09 pm

If the NCAA shafts the Wahine? What makes you think they won’t again. Happened over and over again, so don’t get your hopes up, because they will be dashed!

  12. Cubicle No More ... November 14, 2017 10:51 pm

Hmm… hasn’t UH paid in the past so the basketball teams could play in the pay-to-play postseason tournaments?

I think the additional play could be beneficial to this team, and even make them hungrier to make the NCAAs next year, if by chance they are ssnubbed this season … just my 2 cents….

  13. warriorwahine November 15, 2017 2:11 am

ok whatever wahine win out. crush davis and irvine and be done with it.

after all, they snuck out to a closer location with a red eye, right cindy?

  14. chink November 15, 2017 6:39 am

    12. the hunger comes from missing the NCAA tournament, not by playing in the NIVC.

  15. H-Man November 15, 2017 7:44 am

If the NCAA selection committee should be magnanimous this year and not be swayed by politics, Washington St, Iowa and Maryland are not considered because of their conference record. Then the Wahine and North Texas gets in. But if only Washington St (RPI 43) doesn’t make it because of their terrible conference record, 4-14, I think North Texas with a 26-2 overall record and 13-1 conference record has a better chance of getting a bid over the Wahine. So it looks bleak. But who knows, the Big 10 will get 9 teams in without Iowa and Maryland. 11 seems unreasonable with the two mentioned teams having 6-10 and 5-11 conference records. So maybe the Wahine sneak in.

I recommend the red-eye for those who can sleep on a plane. As soon as the plane is off the ground I’ll zonk out and wake up in LAX or SFO. I’ll grab a nice breakfast in the airport before connecting to the next flight. Since they lower the cabin pressure and you’re getting less O2 as a result, and they dim all the lights on the red-eye, and the stews aren’t pushing meals and snacks constantly, it’s conducive to rest. The outside atmosphere at late night and early morning is usually more stable with fewer storms and less turbulence, so it’s a safer, more restful plane ride. Your fellow traveler on a red-eye is usually someone who flies frequently, travels light and easily, complains minimally, and wants to rest as well. It makes for a good flight. I hope I haven’t encouraged anyone though. I’d like others to keep thinking it’s just horrible horrible to travel on the red-eye.

Good! Rather see Maglio and the others go over to beach asap.

    12.

Can’t compare the Bball program and the vball programs. They are on two completely different levels. I didn’t agree with the bball teams decision to play in the pay-to-play tournament but I would be more in favor for the bball team to do it than the vball team.

  19. Cubicle No More ... November 15, 2017 9:19 am

i used to be able to travel red-eye flights. i’d be able to get some decent sleep. now i can’t, and struggle with them. i think i’m just getting old .. 🙁

  20. noblesol November 15, 2017 9:59 am

Overall, VB at UH is some of the best in the country, and I hope the fans continue to support it. UH Beach VB has a legit shot at the NCAA championship this year. The Men’s VB team has a legit chance to get back to the final four. Woman’s indoor is rebuilding, but they’ve been competitive all season and have improved considerably from that team that had the 0-3 start. The coaches have shown they can move the needle, and the players have grown. Take care of business this week, and they have a shot at an at-large. I don’t think there are many teams that want to draw Hawaii as their 1st round match-up. In the off-season, what remains to be seen is how they recruit and how players prepare for next year.

  21. 2left November 15, 2017 11:29 am

    16. I’ve seen people fall right asleep on red eyes, and it just irritates me! :). But even if a person can sleep, you’d get four hours max.

If any players are the type who actually cannot sleep on red eyes, they are going to be way off their game Thursday night after going 36+ hours without sleep from Tuesday morning to Wednesday night. Especially with having to catch a connecting flight in the morning. I suppose you could try to sleep Wednesday and Thursday during the day, but this would likely keep you up at night and also likely knock your internal clock out of whack. This would be the kind of inside information that is helpful when placing bets in Vegas. 😉

Smart move AD, sounds like this startup is just a way for other people to make money off teams not making the actual tourney. Kinda seems like a scheme to me…If the Wahine have this great attendance/support and barely makes any money, i can’t imagine what other smaller programs will go through just to say they had a “post-season”. The burden year to year on non power 5 conferences has to be tough to maintain over the long run.

  23. vballfreak808 November 15, 2017 2:45 pm

Beach VB post by UH Athletics says that the tournament style Intrasquad Scrimmage this weekend will televise the tournament finals (Sunday – 3 PM) on Spectrum Sports.

Pretty cool that they will cover an out of season event.

  24. rabbit ears November 15, 2017 3:39 pm

good luck to Claire Marie. She is awesome.

  25. Big Island volleyball fan November 15, 2017 4:29 pm

    6. Can you clarify? Did you mean declining would eliminate NIVC AQ or NCAA AQ for Big West Conference? I hope not NCAA here.

For all those who commented on red-eye flight, personally as I got older and my legs got sorer, I can’t stand a red-eye flight any more. It was torture for me. I hope that the players are resilient enough as they are much younger than me. I guess this time the coaching staff chose a red-eye flight since they didn’t want the players to miss all of Tuesday classes as well, since the Davis match takes place on Thursday instead of Friday. At least they didn’t have to go on red-eye flights the previous three times.

Lastly, it’s too bad that Robyn Ah-Mow has to miss out visiting with her family on Thanksgiving. I think that if UH loses to Irvine, she should take the consolation trip as there would be no need for UH to practice any more. And even if UH wins, there is still no guarantee that they’d make the NCAA and all that practice would be for nothing. If I had been a player, I would have had mixed feelings about the whole thing.

  26. Warriorfan November 15, 2017 10:20 pm

Looking forward to seeing the beach wahine play sunday very curious to see who the pairs will be.

  27. rabbit ears November 16, 2017 9:13 am

Ka’iwi Schucht and Maglio would be a awesome pair after indoor is done. They got alot of new faces so competition will be fierce.

  28. islandman November 16, 2017 9:23 am

Wahine basketball accepted WNIT bids in 2015, 2014, and 2013. and they don’t bring in revenue like Women’s VB.

  29. Astroboy November 16, 2017 9:53 am

There are no links on the Wahine schedule to radio or web broadcasts. Are we getting nothing??

  30. tako November 16, 2017 10:06 am

Got something: Saturday, 6:00 pm, channel 1228 – Wahine vs Irvine

i had the Radio-TV info in my story Wednesday. unfortunately it didn’t make the online edition.
complete links on new thread for Thursday.
will answer some of the questions also from there.
    couple of things.
don’t know where the confusion would come. we were discussing the NIVC. That is the AQ that would be eliminated for the Big West.
Spectrum is going to be at the Hawaii Prep championships already. SandBows piggybacking on that.
