Saturday Top 25/BWC scores; Hawaii 3, Davis 0

As several have noticed, Lipscomb no longer on the roster
Don’t have official reason yet other than she is no longer on the team.
She had dealt with a number of injuries during her high school career and definitely wasn’t 100 percent during fall camp or even when the season began.

Don’t know how much of a challenge UC Davis will be. Six players didn’t make the trip, some because of being ill with the same thing that the coach’s wife and two kids have.

Granato with the ace. It’s 9-7. TO UCD

  7. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 7:24 pm

two aces by Iosia has helped UH to a 20-17 lead. TO Davis

  8. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 7:24 pm

Maglio has yet to take a swing.

  9. warriorwahine September 23, 2017 7:26 pm

norene needs those aces and make her serve more nastier….

alas mckenna granato has pocketed her jump serve..for now…

  10. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 7:32 pm

Davis has tied it at 23. up TO UH. Castillo with the kill gives UH set point. Davis has tied it at 24

  11. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 7:34 pm

up ref from the mainland. has let a lot of things go on Davis’ side.
    Wahine win 26-24.

  12. Warriorfan September 23, 2017 7:35 pm

Not the best first set for the wahine but still a wins a win.

  13. warriorwahine September 23, 2017 7:35 pm

and that is why mckenna ross is na wahine mobile reserves

  14. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 7:50 pm

Maglio with her second kill. It’s 15-12 at the TTO

  15. Maverick September 23, 2017 7:53 pm

Tonight is the opposite of last night; middles haven’t contributed much offensively and OHs are. OHs are hitting .250, middles .077.

  16. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 7:55 pm

UH up 18-14 on an Aggie hitting error. TO Davis.

  17. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 7:58 pm

The up ref is horrible. balls rolling up and down the Aggies arms. no call.

  18. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:00 pm

Up ref finally called a lift on the Davis setter. It’s 23-17. TO UCD

  19. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:01 pm

    15. sometimes you have to take wihat the other team gives you as well.

  20. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:03 pm

Granato ends it 25-17. She has a double-double already 10 kills, 10 digs

  21. Maverick September 23, 2017 8:03 pm

    19. Yup. Just interesting.

  22. Warriorfan September 23, 2017 8:04 pm

And that is why Granato plays backrow , geeat digger and can be deadly from there offensively.

  23. warriorwahine September 23, 2017 8:05 pm

    20. mckenna granato pretty sturdy tonight

  24. Maverick September 23, 2017 8:13 pm

Interesting how UH can beat teams of UCI and Davis’ caliber with either a productive middle or outside. Don’t think they will beat Poly without both middle and outside producing, but can beat the other BW teams playing as they have this weekend.

  25. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:17 pm

Ah Mow-Santos challenged Castillo’s attempt being called long. Call overturned. UH up 2-1.

  26. Maverick September 23, 2017 8:20 pm

For those interested in RPI (estimated), Poly is still the BW’s best ranked team at #30, with a stellar 13-2 record and despite a #76 rated SOS. UH has really climbed the rankings in the past couple of weeks, now at #46 with a middling 7-5 record but a really strong #17 SOS. If UH continues to win, expect UH to surpass Poly in the rankings in the next couple of weeks. I think SOS will continue to serve UH well. October 7 is looming.

  27. Volleyball Fan September 23, 2017 8:20 pm

    24. Actually I didn’t think that Cal Poly was so great today against Riverside as the latter had so many errors which helped Cal Poly. Perhaps they took Riverside rather lightly. Both teams had more than the usual errors. No doubt that Cal Poly needs to play a whole lot better to challenge UH.

  28. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:22 pm

    UH up 9-5. TO Davis.

  29. rage September 23, 2017 8:24 pm

I just realized that Kahakai and Iosia have similar tattoos behind their ears.

  30. Maverick September 23, 2017 8:25 pm

    27. I didn’t see that match, so I defer to your judgment. Good teams have off nights sometimes. However, Poly has the two power outsides an a very good middle. Best BW talent that UH will see this year.

  31. HawaiiMongoose September 23, 2017 8:26 pm

Since no one has brought it up yet in today’s thread, I’ll be the one to say it: I really dislike the end-line camera view.

  32. Maverick September 23, 2017 8:27 pm

    31. I like it in small doses.

  33. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:29 pm

Ah Mow-Santos 2-0 on challenges. UH up 13-8.

  34. Warriorfan September 23, 2017 8:33 pm

    Re.30
The older Van Winden has problems with Mags big block though.
I believe she hit negative both matches against the wahine last year.

  35. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:33 pm

Kahakai has 1200 digs for her career.
    UH up 16-12

  36. Maverick September 23, 2017 8:40 pm

    34. Yes, she had problems with UH’s frontline of Taylor/Mitchem/Maglio last year. But now Poly has her 6-3, 1st team Pac-12 sister, so UH can’t focus solely on Adlee. And Poly’s MBs had great games when Davis tried to take away the Van Windens. Torrey is by far the better player for Poly, in terms of hitting and blocking.

  37. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:43 pm

Hawaii was serving for the match at 24-15. it’s now 24-20. TO UH

  38. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 8:45 pm

Maglio with the kill. finally ends it 25-20

  39. Warriorfan September 23, 2017 8:46 pm

She rarely faced that frontline, she had problems with Mags and Iosia block and I expect the same this year also.

The younger Van winden will be a problem though, we will need Casey and Sophia to block well against her and Mckenna G and Mags to play up to their standards.

  40. Maverick September 23, 2017 8:48 pm

Depends how UH defends her sister, who they decide to focus on, etc. Last year is last year.

  41. Volleyball Fan September 23, 2017 8:50 pm

30 & 34: Yes, Cal Poly played great against Davis and Fullerton with both Van Winden sisters along with Greisen hitting in double figures and Torrey van Winden and Raean Grieson hitting above 70% without errors.. They whole team hit above 30%. Today, they all had errors and hitting percentage went down by more than half. Perhaps Riverside played greater defense, but they sure had a lot of hitting errors.

  42. Maverick September 23, 2017 8:55 pm

    41. Maybe an off night. Maybe playing 3 matches this week, including tonight’s second of a back-to-back had something to do with it. I think we are all in violent agreement.

  43. Volleyball Fan September 23, 2017 8:56 pm

39 & 40: When middle blockers focused on the van Winden sisters, they left the block open for Greisen and she ended up with the most kills hitting over 85% without an error in the match against Davis. Their crafty setter will have to produce a balanced attack. Then they’ll present a challenge to UH.

  44. Maverick September 23, 2017 9:02 pm

Anyone else think the 2019 season has the potential to be a really poor one for UH? No Maglio, Granato, Castillo, Koelsch, Kahakai, Ma’afala, Greeley. Maybe the middle will be ok with Howling and Sky, with Iosia taking on the leadership role. Very worried about the outsides/opposite. Got a couple of projects coming in so far. Who is the next setter? To repeat what everyone else has said, recruiting is so critical.

  45. warriorwahine September 23, 2017 9:06 pm

october will be quite a siege for na wahine. defend against santa barbara and cal poly and then go on a siege versus the beach and csun

  46. warriorwahine September 23, 2017 9:15 pm

so savannah says what i know. about the jump serving. and that can be switched on at will.

  47. Warriorfan September 23, 2017 9:21 pm

    44. As we have seen with Cal Poly one big impact transfer can change things very quickly.
Very interested to see what coach Robyn does with the 3-4 available scholarships for next season.

  48. Maverick September 23, 2017 9:39 pm

    47. Yup

  49. rabbit ears September 23, 2017 9:43 pm

what’s up Mav, you been really negative the past two matches. Gotta believe that we will run the table and get the AQ.

  50. FitTrainer September 23, 2017 9:52 pm

    27. Agreed that CalPoly didn’t play their best today. They got the win but maybe played down to their level. They got the sweep at least.

TVW would have to be the main focus in my view. AVW is not as good a terminator and doesn’t hit off the block as well or tip as well as her sister. Greisen is always a threat. Niemen didn’t play as well today as she did against Davis. Overall, with Nelson setting and a decent Libero they will be tough to beat.

Good to see Granato and Castillo have a good match, but agree with both Lisa and Chris that they need to involve Maglio earlier in the match to get her rhythm. She had two kills in set one and the connection was not there. Then averaged 5 kills per set in the rest of the game. We will need a full game of her fire power and a balanced attack to beat Poly. Bring on the block party as well as they will have some trouble with it. Just need to be prepared in particular, of TVW’a tip shots if the block is up on her. She has the “Beach” placement.

We’ll need more consistent setting. Iosia’ sets a little off (low ) the last two games (at least to start).

  51. Ron September 23, 2017 9:53 pm

I wish the Coach would explain her decision making with a little more detail than “I had a feeling”. I think yanking Williams last night even when she was doing fine and then leaving Sofia in tonight when she was having a bad night was a mistake. I base this on observation of Sky’s facial expressions and body language. Not necessarily the best way to judge but I am often right . Coach knows a lot about the x’s and o’s of the game but she needs to learn more about dealing with young ladies. Shanley could have been a difference maker. We should not have let her get away. I have the same fears about recruiting as most of you. On the other hand, I like to see that Ross has been recognized as a contributor after languishing on the bench last year.

  52. rabbit ears September 23, 2017 10:08 pm

We are just speculating about Shaney. Maybe she was just home sick. We forget how young the wahines are.

  53. Cindy Luis September 23, 2017 10:15 pm

    51. Ah Mow-Santos said she wanted to change things up, not let the other team get used to what they’re doing. Wouldn’t call that ‘a feeling.’
Howling was having a poor night in part to the low sets from Iosia.

Regarding Lipscomb: players leave for various reasons. Feel that you’re jumping to a conclusion that it’s because of Ah Mow-Santos inability to deal with young ladies. Not sure how you got there.
You can’t force a player to stay if she doesn’t want to be here so i’t’s not a matter of ‘letting her get away.’ She wasn’t able to fully participate in practices because of prior injuries.
Maybe she could have made a difference. We’ll never know.
As for Ross. she was a freshman last season, trying to break into a lineup, and has made great strides this year in her all-around game. She’s still undersized. ‘

  54. Nomu September 23, 2017 11:00 pm

Just my personal opinion, after watching the games to date, every player on this team can be better than they have shown. And no amount of coaching will make you play your best unless you want to play your best.

Imho, like most things in life, you have to make a commitment to yourself first and foremost, before anything else. And when you do, you don’t leave much room for any regrets.

Most importantly, don’t ever forget to have fun, and cherish the experiences, which one day will all become fond memories. Just my two pennies and nothing else.

  55. Hot September 23, 2017 11:48 pm

Wow. Lipscomb leaving will NOT HELP Hawai’i. Yikes. I thought she would be a feasible candidate for the Opposite position next year after Kendra’s graduation.

  56. ignaciosaid September 24, 2017 2:43 am

#54–agree with you, totally–there are players who are just going through the motions and are not focusing! Could detail , but I am not the coach. With Shaney leaving , think Casey would be better at opp , and Sibley starting OH (Mck G is Mck G ,but still does not move her feet on defense, Mck R is a good backrow sub with better range and really think Janelle G will improve the defense. Injuries could be problem , but really think Burns a better presence to go with Mags–Sky and Sophia need playing time and are looking good after Mags graduates.) Do believe that UH is getting some good prospects in next 2+ years——present team has potential to SURPRISE (if they stay FOCUSED ! GO BOWS

  57. Warriorfan September 24, 2017 5:00 am

Maybe shaney will switch to beach only like Arden Misraje.
She was a hall recruit after all. Beach is easier on the body(usually) and don’t need big hops there.

  58. H-Man September 24, 2017 6:22 am

How many players leave in the middle of a season? This follows Emma Smith’s departure.

  59. Ron September 24, 2017 8:17 am

57- Apparently Shaney is no longer in school. 53- I was quoting Robyn ‘s answer to a Scott Robes question. In addition to no offense, Sophia was slow to close the block on several occasions. I am just happy that they discovered that is a talented back-row player where her size is not a factor. I am starting to see the wisdom of letting Granato play back row because she is getting better. 56- I really like your ideas.

  60. Maverick September 24, 2017 9:53 am

Another upset: after beating #5 Wisconsin on Friday, unranked Michigan State beats #1 Minnesota 3-0. I’d be stunned if MSU isn’t top 20 this week.

  61. Casual Observer September 24, 2017 12:06 pm

Just wondering why Sibley isn’t seeing more playing time. She can hit a heavier ball more consistently and has the size and experience.
Especially against better teams, we don’t seem to hit hard shots. Or is it because of bad sets?

  62. shar September 24, 2017 3:10 pm

I don’t know what some of the posters are implying but I trust Robyn Ah Mow Santos. I have confidence in her. She is coaching young ladies but what if she gave in to all of them and we have a losing season? Obviously, everyone can’t get what they want. Let the players play and let the coaches coach.

  63. menehune September 24, 2017 3:43 pm

Just wish Iosea would set our Middles higher, especially for Howling. She always gets blocked on the low sets.

  64. Fit Trainer September 24, 2017 4:43 pm

    63. Unfortunately, the sets have been a little low on a few times in the last two matches and not just to Howling. At the end of yesterday’s match (around the 5 match points time), there were two low, short sets to Granato she had to dink both, one low and slightly behind set to Castillo on the outside and one low set to Maglio in the middle (they said it was blocked back but it looked like it hit the top of the twine). There were good sets of course, but in that in sequence several were off. Maybe Iosia was getting a little gassed because of the long rallies? Or too muc running around when themoasses were off? In any event, the connections were off. Hopefully, they Work it out this week in practice. The team will need to be sharp when they play Poly.

  65. Hot September 24, 2017 7:27 pm

Hawai’i is a poor passing team and most setters will turn in inconsistent sets when that’s what they’re getting from their passers. Also, players will have bad days. It just so happened that Iosia had back-to-back ones.

  66. FitTrainer September 25, 2017 5:30 am

    65. Makes sense. She probably just needs to get in a rhythm just like the hitters need to get in their rhythm (which starts from consistent passing). Not trying to take anything away from Iosia. She has had to play just about every set in every game. Sometimes that can mean a lot of running around especially in some long rallies.

  67. Maverick September 25, 2017 8:59 am

Poly got enough votes to place 27th in today’s poll. Outside shot at being ranked in the top 25 when they play UH.

In estimated RPI, Poly ranked 27th, and UH now up to 41st.

  68. Maverick September 25, 2017 9:04 am

UH foes in the poll: BYU at 9, UCLA at 13, Utah at 15, Baylor at 31.

  69. airsumo September 25, 2017 9:21 am

Per VT two recent 2018 recruits were released from their commitments. A 6′ 1″ OH and a 6’5″ M/H, RS. I don’t know anything about their skills or schools.

  70. Maverick September 25, 2017 9:30 am

    69. I wonder if the 6’5″ would consider moving to the Pacific as she was an ACC commit. Hopefully she has skills/athleticism and not just height.

I read on one of the previous threads that UH had a couple of recruits in. Does anyone know anything about them?

  71. tako September 25, 2017 9:50 am

Kamalei Krug, listed at 6′ 1″ and 180lbs, touches 9′ 11″. Bigger version of MG and IMO a project as an outside. Has potential to be very good when she gets stronger and matures physically. She has relatively currently video on the web.

Trinity Castanenda listed at 6′ 1″ touches 10′ 3″. IMO has the best chance to contribute early. Most of her video shows her as a Junior. If she improves during her senior season she’ll be a major get.

    Anyone, other comments???

  72. Maverick September 25, 2017 10:01 am

    71. Were these the two on a visit this past week or two? I was hoping the staff had new potential commits they were actively recruiting.

  73. tako September 25, 2017 10:17 am

72, hope you are correct and we had additional recruits in. maybe, Cindy has info…if not names, confirmation that we had visits.

  74. Maverick September 25, 2017 10:26 am

73, hope so too. UH is already behind the 8 ball for 2019. But there is a 2020 gem that UH needs to land to maintain its position as the school of choice for the top local recruits.

  75. noblesol September 25, 2017 1:02 pm

I’ve seen Ms. Krug and her dad attending a match recently. I don’t know how much of a project she’ll be, but I don’t think strength is going to be an issue. She looks a legit 6’1″, strong and athletic, but quickness is hard to judge and where I’m most uncertain. Having looked at her video, she does serve and play some back row, middle and pin, and appears to have a nice arm swing and hit a heavy ball when she connects. She’s at a small DII school though, and the speed and quality of competition she is seeing across the net is a long way from NCAA D1. She’s a local girl, knows UH and the Wahine well, and I’m sure the coaching staff knows what they getting.

  76. Warriorfan September 25, 2017 1:19 pm

i think Krug will be good, she hits hard,
One of those local players that you wished stayed home if she went under the UH coaches radar but glad she did not.
