Monday: Poll, Lipscomb, etc

To get it out of the way first,
Lipscomb has “voluntarily withdrawn from the volleyball program.”
Part of the hesitation on the part of Ah Mow-Santos Friday and Saturday to comment was she wanted to hear from compliance first. There are privacy issues involved in these sorts of things and she didn’t want to say something she shouldn’t. Not saying privacy issue was HIPA-related due to her injuries because I don’t know. just know that there were privacy issues.

the other thread said something about Lipscomb no longer being in school. As far as I know, she is still in classes and finishing out the semester. If players want to continue in college, they have to show progress towards a degree so withdrawing from school would erase the credits and put her a semester behind any place she would choose to transfer. Wouldn’t make sense.
Lipscomb will not be going over to beach, as WF suggested. My understanding is she is gone after the semester.
Misraje a different story, wanted to walk on for both, was injured. She is rehabbing this semester and will be beach-only in spring.

Also on the previous thread,
How many players leave in the middle of a season? This follows Emma Smith’s departure.
when it comes to the Wahine most recently, you had
Waber making a decision to transfer based on family reasons
Huff who decided to go strictly basketball

Not sure why Smith was brought up. She left after spring. Decision was based on her wanting to finish her degree in four years. She had been asked to redshirt this season. Didn’t want to
Isn’t seeing much time at Cal. 13 sets, 15 digs, 1 ace

Travel roster will be announced Tuesday. with 14 allowed to travel, my guess is that Burns, Okino and Gong stay home. but that’s just me.

Thanks for the info. I thought Burns played well when she got in.
I though Huff left after the basketball season in April of 2016.

  2. Maverick September 25, 2017 7:30 pm

    1. Huff left the WVB team during the season to focus on WBB. After the WBB’s season and academic term were over, she then transferred to Utah. She redshirted last year and should see action this upcoming season for the Utes.

Bummed we didn’t even get a chance to see her in warm ups. If she was gonna stay in school she really should have just stuck it out with the team. Anything can happen that could have given her a chance. Plus the training alone would help her at her next destination. Hope she changes her mind.

    Cindy,
In guessing the travel team, you mentioned that Burns maybe staying home. I am wondering why? In the Baylor win, both she and Sibley were keys to turning that match around. I would think they may need Burns’s Blocking and experience on the road. Is she okay? I read that she may have tweaked something during Baylor, is she still injured?

  5. Cindy Luis September 25, 2017 9:35 pm

    3. she wasn’t cleared to play so she didn’t participate in warmups. Although she wasn’t officially redshirting that seemed to be the case, as well as Gong. I don’t know if she is staying in school, was pointing out why it would make sense given the need to show academic progress towards a degree. I was told she was still in school but no way to confirm it.

She voluntarily left the team. There would be no reason to stay and train. If you remember in the case of Waber, she did not participate after she decided to transfer. There was no reason for the coaches to spend time working with her if she was not going to be playing the following year.

Not sure what you mean that ‘anything could happen that could have given her a chance.’ this was not about lack of playing time.

    4. that is just my guess. I’ll know for sure tomorrow. They won’t need her on the road this week against the two bottom teams in the league
she is wearing a knee brace/wrap. She hasn’t played since Baylor, which was just her second match. She played against BYU the night before on Sept. 7.
AGAIN, that is just my guess.

Was she injured again after Baylor? Because if she’s cleared to play, I’m not understanding why Ah Mow-Santos is not using her at all. Yes, she is a little slow, but she’s not terrible by any means, and she has proven that she has what it takes to help the team. It’s not like Williams and Howling are stellar for Burns not to be in the mix.

  7. fitTrainer September 26, 2017 3:50 am

Was Lipscomb asked to redshirt? I realize she had an injury but that doesn’t mean she would necessarily want to voluntarily leave the team. It’s speculation that she left solely because of injury. Lots of players are injured but remain with the team and take a medical redshirt etc.

If she left because of an injury why all the talk about compliance and privacy? I am still a little confused? What was the official statement why she left or were we given one?

  8. FitTrainer September 26, 2017 3:58 am

    6. I agree. I would like to see Burns be given some time. She did a decent job in the short amount of time we’ve seen her.

  9. rabbit ears September 26, 2017 9:09 am

agree, I thought Burn did ok against Baylor. Definitely should be given more opportunities. Not sure if her knee is acting up again. You cannot teach 6-5″. Thought Kendra had a good weekend. Hitting harder, digging balls, setting balls, high volleyball IQ.

  10. mauna September 26, 2017 10:20 am

Robyn should do a Rolo event to give McKenna Ross a well deserved scholarship. But then it’s my opinion.

  11. Volleyman September 26, 2017 11:01 am

Hopefully we can recruit some internationals with the leftover scholarships.

  12. Ron September 26, 2017 11:06 am

#10 A very thoughtful idea but I would rather see them award the soon to be available scholarship to a big. I would check out who like to transfer from other programs and maybe look at someone on the beach team if that is even an option.

  13. Meefirst September 26, 2017 12:08 pm

Cindy, I would like to know if you ask the coach to give specific reasons why Burns is not traveling, I think she plays an important role in the middle position seeing as we have new freshman in the mix. If she is injured have they come out and said what the injury is? What are they doing to get her back on the court? When do they think that will happen? Those types of questions I am hoping to get answers to.

  14. HanaBrada September 26, 2017 2:34 pm

I totally agree with Robyn in using Howling instead of Burns because Howling is more athletic, faster (foot speed & co-ordination), physical (swings harder) and has a better v.b. IQ at the net. I agree Burns’ 6/5 is definite plus but does not outweigh Howling’s attributes I mentioned.
I also agree with Ah Mow Santos using Ross vs Greely and/or Sibley(sp?).
    Just my opinions.

  15. mauna September 26, 2017 4:48 pm

    12. This is for the second semester for Ross, which will come avail when Lipscomb leave UH after this semester. They will be 3 scholies avail next 2018 season with Greeley, Koelsch and Maglio grads. As for 2018 season and on for Ross we’ll see how Robyn sees it.

    6. Burns has not recovered from her knee injury against Baylor. If you see her on the sidelines you will see the big knee wrap.
disagree with your comment that she has proven she has what it takes to help the team. The two freshmen middles are better. IMHO. Burns is taller.

    7. I don’t believe she was asked to redshirt. she has had multiple injuries during her high school career.
There was no “official” statement from the school in terms of a press release. What Ah Mow-Santos said was that she voluntarily left the program and that she was still in school.
the point of privacy talk is that it’s private. Injury falls under HIPA which is the Health Information Privacy Act.
Again, not saying it was HIPA related. but there are privacy issues regarding student-athletes that if they choose not to waive that is their right.
    10. the scholarship remains in tact through the semester. No one else is getting it this season

    13. nope, did not ask specifically why Burns wasn’t traveling. And I am not surprised based on what I’ve seen in practic.
not sure what you want in terms of information. Burns has a knee injury this time. Have said that. As for the specifics of her getting back on the court, she is working with the trainers to do so. If she isn’t ready, she isn’t ready.

    15. as for commits in 2018, TTrinity Castaneda (6’1″ Outside) California/Shadow Hills HS)
Liliana Light (6’1″ Setter) California/Pleasant Grove HS) decomit, heading to Santa Clara.
