Granato double-doubles as Hawaii sweeps UC Riverside

Senior hitter McKenna Granato put down 12 kills and picked up her 100th career ace as Hawaii swept UC Riverside, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 in a Big West volleyball match tonight in Riverside, Calif.

Granato added 10 digs for her ninth double-double for the Rainbow Wahine (12-6, 8-1 Big West). Senior libero Tita Akiu had 19 digs, including her 300th UH career, for her 17th match in double digits.

Freshman hitter Marissa Holt had nine kills for the Highlanders (6-13, 1-7) who are 0-25 against the Wahine all-time. Sophomore libero Nicole Rodriguez finished with 14 digs.

Hawaii puts its three-match winning streak on the line at Cal State Fullerton (6-15, 0-8) on Saturday.

UH audio and UCR video not synchronized. It just threw me off. So I switched to the CSUN-Cal Poly match. Much more dramatic match. First set was very close, 29-27. Cal Poly faced set point and somehow pulled it off. Cal Poly was really rattled, but in the second set they settled down. CSUN is making more mistakes now. Second set not as close.

I guess UCR is missing K. Ahuna who is still injured. UH can close the match in three sets. Meanwhile, Cal Poly – Northridge match is still in the second set.

  17. Cindy Luis October 19, 2018 5:13 pm

  27. greenthumb October 19, 2018 5:57 pm

Shucks, was hoping CSUN couldā€™ve helped us out with taking a set or two off CP. šŸ˜œ As for our own matches, itā€™s too bad Ahuna was out, and that Schneider is reportedly not cleared for play tomorrow. I hate when injuries keep players off the court, no matter what side theyā€™re representing.

  28. Big Island volleyball fan October 19, 2018 6:06 pm

    27. How could CSUN have helped UH by taking a set or two from Cal Poly? It’s not like UH will play Cal Poly tomorrow. Only thing I could think of is that CSUN could tire out Cal Poly before playing Long Beach tomorrow. Instead, it is Long Beach that has just taken UCSB to the fifth set by winning a close, extended fourth set. So UCSB has indirectly helped Cal Poly by tiring out Long Beach. So that match still goes on.

  29. Cindy Luis October 19, 2018 6:33 pm

    26. Gong did not make the trip. I was told Tuesday all were going. Guess something changed.
27-28. Set differential would come into play way down in the tie-breaker if it goes to that.
UCSB had 2 match points, Long Beach comes back to end it 19-17 on its third attempt.

  31. Big Island volleyball fan October 19, 2018 6:43 pm

Wow, UCSB-Long Beach was the most dramatic match of the Big West series today. Both sides averted match points and it was a see-saw until finally the Beach won 19-17 in the fifth, coming back from two sets down. The match last 2 1/2 hours while Cal Poly was done with CSUN in about one hour and 35 minutes, nearly an hour earlier. The Beach will be tired out when meeting Cal Poly tomorrow night. I’ll rather watch that match than UH vs. Fullerton, which will probably be lopsided with little or no drama. I don’t expect the Titans to give the Wahine much of a challenge if any; whereas, the 49ers might still give the Mustangs a run for their money. I won’t rule them out altogether The 49ers proved to be a pesky team with a never-die attitude. Cal Poly will be busy watching video and scouting the Beach for a long time before tomorrow’s match. Even if the Beach takes two sets from Cal Poly, it won’t help Hawaii as Cal Poly would have plenty of time to recover until next Friday. The only way the Beach could help Hawaii is if they managed to upset Cal Poly. It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow. I wonder if Hawaii fans might switch to the Cal Poly – Long Beach match if UH finishes off Fullerton quickly. I would highly recommend as UH fans would get an idea of how Cal Poly can perform on the road against a pesky team like Long Beach.

  32. greenthumb October 19, 2018 7:02 pm

28-29. Mahalo to Cindy for explaining what I was alluding to. Even if other teams donā€™t beat CP, taking sets off CP could help us in the five-step tiebreaker analysis process.

Looks like CP gets in to the postseason even as an at-large, so BWC is best served on the national scene if someone other than CP wins the conference (2 bids). And who better to top the conference than the Wahine?

  33. Big Island volleyball fan October 19, 2018 7:12 pm

    32. Since Cal Poly already defeated UH in 3 sets, wouldn’t UH have to beat Cal Poly in 3 sets to take it to the next tie-breaker (provided that neither team lost to other Big West teams till the end of the season)? A four or five-set win wouldn’t suffice as set differential between the two leading teams would count first. What are other rules of a tie-breaker?

  34. Cindy Luis October 19, 2018 7:15 pm

    33. Cal Poly defeated Hawaii in 4. If UH were to sweep CP and teams are tied, Hawaii has the head-to-head tiebreaker

  35. Big Island volleyball fan October 19, 2018 7:29 pm

    34. Thanks, Cindy. I forgot that Cal Poly beat UH in 4 instead of 3. But suppose UH beat Cal Poly in 4, what other tiebreaker rules exist?

    From Big West manual
    http://www.bigwest.org/code_book/2017/2016-17%20BWC%20Manual%20-%20Section%2021-VB8.1.16.pdf
In the event two teams tie for first place in the final standings, the following tie-breaking formula shall be used to determine the automatic qualifier:
    1. The winner of the two-match series between the tied teams
shall be declared the automatic qualifier.
    2. If still tied, the team with the best record in conference
matches against common opponents beginning at the top of the standings and working down the standings until the tie is broken shall be declared the automatic qualifier. Ties among teams at the top of the standings should be broken first to establish a ranked order.
    3. If still tied, the team with the best total win/loss set record in conference matches against all conference opponents, including the matches between the tied teams, shall be declared the automatic qualifier.
    4. If still tied, the team with the best win/loss set record against common conference opponents, excluding the team with which it is tied, beginning at the top of the standings and working down until the tie is broken shall be declared the automatic qualifier. Ties at the top of the standings should be broken first to establish a ranked order.
    5. If still tied, the team with the highest point ratio in all conference matches shall be declared the automatic qualifier.

  38. Big Island volleyball fan October 19, 2018 8:05 pm

    37. Thanks, Cindy, for citing the rule book. It explains why Greenthumb was wishing that CSUN could have taken a set from Cal Poly. However, rule #1 doesn’t make sense to me. How can there be a winner between two tied teams? Does this mean that whoever has the better sets-won-lost ratio wins? I can understand the other rules as they sound similar to tiebreaker rules in world championship matches.

  39. darkfire35 October 19, 2018 8:24 pm

Was glad to hear Sky got in the game for a while and produced some. GO BOWS!

  40. Kahuna October 19, 2018 9:21 pm

Geez…93 swings for Ruddins? What happened to the concept of team.?If I was a member of the UCSB team, I would not be thrilled with the way things are going. Are the UCSB coaches not smart enough to design other plays other than set the ball to a Ruddins?

If I was the coach, I would never do that to the team . Itā€™s just not good for team morale.

  41. greenthumb October 19, 2018 9:58 pm

38, the first tiebreaker is the head-to-head record. Let’s say two teams are tied for first. However, one team has swept the other in conference play, two matches to none. Then that team gets the AQ and steps 2 through 5 are not needed.

  42. Big Island volleyball fan October 19, 2018 10:01 pm

    40. You are right. Usually one person cannot lift a team to victory, Cal Poly will learn tomorrow that they can’t just count on Torrey van Winden to carry them against Long Beach at the Pyramid. She will need help from other players. Unlike CSUN, I don’t expect Cal Poly to win in three straight sets. This could go to five sets either way.

However, there are exceptions. Consider that Egonu, the Italian superstar, lifted her team to victory against China in the Women’s World Championship today with a world record of 45 points (39 kills in 88 swings, a block and 5 aces). It took five sets, the last two extended. That was a monumental upset! So Italy will play against Serbia again for the world championship within a few hours. Italy will be tired just like Long Beach that just defeated UCSB, also in five sets.

  43. Sheila October 20, 2018 8:37 am

Wish Burn get rested today for next week challenge. As tough 7 matches coming after today, wish bench subs (Skyler, Krug, Ross, etc) get tune up time today. Expects continuing tune up of Granato/setters attack variations today. Still failing to take an easy point off over passes which could have dumped to side or down instead hitting back to diggers? Wahines weakness: not totally dominating in any single category. But wahines strength (above average in every category) is good enough to over come this weakness as well as to perform like top 25 team.

  44. iGrokSpock October 20, 2018 10:04 am
