Wahine walking wounded came through (IMUA)! Judging by com- ments tonight , nothing new from what I mentioned previously. Some changes made and although Wahine struggled , they held together for very , very important wins , this weekend. Time to rest and mend and focus for next weekend (to prepare for BIG GAMES next-next week versus Poly)! Stretch run coming —-time to FOCUS– LET’S GO BOWS!!!!!!
Anytime you can get out of the MataDome with a win, it’s a good night. Stork always has them playing well there against Hawaii. No need to beat themselves up too much, except for those service errors. That they must clean up.
I saw a lot of sniffling noses and flushed cheeks out there the past couple of nights. Looks like the crud hit the team on this road trip. It was making the rounds at work this week as well, most everyone had caught it. Hits hard for a few days, but nothing lasting. Hits hard enough though that I’m sure it threw more than a few off their game. Granato gets my True Grit award for the weekend.

if you are going to jump before the serve then do a jump topspin serve.

Hey everyone! Do you remember when we had “Ohana Batting Cage”. All the youth, high school, and adults would go there to work on their individual batting from 40-90 miles per hour cages. I think it would be a great investment/invention to build a ” Ohana Diggers Cage” here on the island. The cages would offer various floaters, simulated jump serve , long and short serves at different speeds. I think the last several years passing has been our worst enemy.
Good win Bows, showed a lot of heart again. CSUN is tougher this season and this win puts distance between us in conference. Eager to see if Irvine can handle Cal Poly and help us gain some ground. Big West is actually competitive this year, to say the least.
I think Greeley, Guinasso and Ma’afala should be given a shot in Anderson’s role.
If you have a heart or high blood pressure or bladder problem, this is not the team to watch, and with UCI and Cal Poly still left to play on their home court, the Wahine really need to crank their game up …and also work on their serving. Maybe Robyn should have them serve underhand. At least the ball should go over and the blockers have a chance.
The only constant on this team is Emily, a tried and trusted veteran who can be counted on whenever the bleeding needs to be stopped. Granato is OK but she’s like a light switch (like the team), you just never know if she’ll be on or off.
But, once a Wahine fan, always a Wahine fan. GO BOWS.
The above comments cover my feelings about the game and the team so no need to add. Would like to say that Ma’afala is growing on me. She is a gamer.
68. Agree with you, Ron. Ma’afala should get more PT. Like Kendra, she brings that extra energy that the team so often lacks.
But that aside, she is a good setter and sets the Middles higher where they can crank it.
Is Norene having conditioning problems. Her setting went in the tank in the 4th set. Maglio was killing it with good sets. Then the sets went south. Like Maafala but she isn’t light on her feet like Anderson or Baby G. The dinks were killing us with Maafala in.
It’s sad that the Medical staff hasn’t been able to get Kalei Greeley back to 100%. Hate to see her end her career like this. Unfortunately, Ross been outplaying her for the defensive spot.
It seems that Robyn is giving the girls the green light onto serve tough. Much like the men’s game, service errors are high because easy serves are easy points for the receiving team. In the end, a ratio of 1:1 is not bad. The wahine need to work on the timing of service errors.
I think there is a time and place for serving tough. 16 and 17 SE’s is giving up over a full match in points alone on the errors. We’re just lucky LBSU had their share of service errors and were keeping pace with us at times. Too many points to give up against a good team like Poly.
Serve tough to put pressure on, but when it is every other play, the team can’t get into an offensive rhythm. Sometimes just keeping the ball in play is the smart thing to do (like Setatone said, limiting the errors at key times).

The fact that the service errors was uniform across the team may indicate that the staff has given the go ahead to serve tougher than normal in hopes tougher serving will be ready for the rematch at Cal Poly. Staff did not appear upset with all the service errors. If so, hope it works. The seniors need to make every serve count like it is their last – because it will be, as far as post season is concerned. Good luck ladies.
A 1:1 SA to SE ratio against is good, and against CSUN it turned out fine as service aces ultimately propelled the Wahine to the win. But their season average is 1:1.5 aces to errors, and if you throw out the overmatched Northern AZ and Fullerton teams, the mark drops to a pretty dismal 1:2.1 ratio. My guess is if you only look at the ranked teams, including Poly, it gets even worse. Anyway, they got the green light and I agree with Robyn that if you throw over a soft serve it’s coming right back at you as a point.
Just because a serve isn’t a tough jump serve doesn’t mean it is a cupcake. An accurate serve can be as tough to return.
The stats show a poor overall effort on the season. Maybe they will have enough “practice” during games to improve by the Poly rematch or post-season but they also risk losing before then. They have to know when to pull the plug and go for accuracy and not tough at key times during a match (and if they are going to miss, miss long).

as for the serving… they practice all the time. doesn’t mean it translates to getting it in when it comes to came time.
i do think Castillo’s serving run in Set 4 was key given she had been erratic. kept it in when it counted.
as for Ma’afala getting more time. you have to look at the substitution patterns. they may want her to set for Iosia or go to the 6-2 like they did against CSUN. a lot to consider when putting someone in.
