Hawaii 3, Fullerton 0; Happy 23rd to SSC, Sibley out

Arena opened 23 years ago tonight. sellout vs. San Jose State
Sibley not medically cleared. My guess is that it is concussion protocol
Gong still out with the flu.

Believe there is at least one recruit in tonight.
Looks like Casteneda near the Spectrum corner

At 6:30pm, there is a mass of fans waiting to get into the arena. Any reason? Seems that they are short staffed tonight.

  27. Cindy Luis October 21, 2017 7:46 pm

Maglio ends it 27-25. Congrats to Kahakai, reaching the 1,300 dig mark.

  28. ignaciosaid October 21, 2017 7:47 pm

haven’t we’ve seen this many times before–Wahine just going through motions (no energy and maybe lost interest–could also be thinking about next week)!! I’m going to get flack , but have said it before–current starters are not cutting it! Maybe time for coaches to get nasty!!!!

  29. Cindy Luis October 21, 2017 7:49 pm

Kill by Maglio makes it 4-1. TO Fullerton

  30. warriorwahine October 21, 2017 7:51 pm

    28. flak or not. wahine was just lackluster all year. no energy at all.

  31. Willie October 21, 2017 7:53 pm

#28, I agree, tried to post. I said they were lethargic, same as your no energy, going through the motions in set #1

They are starting to rev up in set #2; thank goodness,

  32. Cindy Luis October 21, 2017 7:57 pm

Maglio ends it on the service overpass. 25-11

  36. warriorwahine October 21, 2017 8:11 pm

i like faith ma’afalas serve – simple, accurate, and decisive!

forget jump float, even jump top spin isnt necessary

  37. Cubicle No More ... October 21, 2017 8:17 pm

much better set 2 … go bows!

nice serving and set distribution by iosia. maglio again having a very good night.

  38. Cindy Luis October 21, 2017 8:25 pm

    UH up 7-2. TO Titans

  39. Cindy Luis October 21, 2017 8:32 pm

    UH up 12-6. TO Fullerton

  40. warriorwahine October 21, 2017 8:34 pm

think someone needs to let robyn know to have her wahine stand and serve instead of jump floating to serve aggressively – most of those hit net anyways. just stand behind at the line and hit it high over or stand far back behind the line and hit it hard over.

that should of accuracy and even frighten cal poly. i saw someone let norene know that she needs to sharpen her ‘nasty serve’ as there were others competing for her nasty serve

  41. Cindy Luis October 21, 2017 8:38 pm

Howling in on the right. it’s 18-11

  42. Cindy Luis October 21, 2017 8:43 pm

Okino with the ace. ends it 25-14.

  43. warriorwahine October 21, 2017 8:46 pm

rika must be excited – ‘all i had to do was to serve an ace and win.’

  44. warriorwahine October 21, 2017 8:50 pm

    42. add to that. need some more aces versus cal poly next week.

    nasty and ‘nastier’ serve included.

  45. greenthumb October 21, 2017 9:00 pm

Tonight seems like it was a good tuneup for the roadtrip. There were some crazy saves; Kahakai is going to be hard to replace. Like seeing the ball going to Maglio with more frequency. Ma’afala brings such energy to the court.

Happy Anniversary to the Stan and mahalo to the staff who take such good care of it.

  46. Ki October 21, 2017 9:13 pm

5.3 kps & 2.17 bps. Hope Emily Maglio is nominated for Big West POW.

  47. warriorwahine October 21, 2017 9:14 pm

robyn promises to practice serving for 2 hours. someone should let her know – serve aggressive? = jump top spin serve. aggressive not necessary? = mortar serve by stand behind the line or far behind it and hit it hard and straight. just like faith ma’afala, kendra koelsch (years before), and even shar tai manuolevao back then.

  48. Kahuna October 21, 2017 9:45 pm

I saw the recruit and a lady supposedly her mother sitting like three rows above where the Shoji’s sit and it didn’t look to me like it’s Castaneda but maybe she looks different in street clothes. Saw Angelica wave her on to the floor and had her join the team in the locker room for post game talk. I was hoping it would be some setter since we will need a back up next year and beyond.

  49. islandman October 21, 2017 9:50 pm

Dave said in the post-game, Howling may be used next year at opposite or as an outside hitter.

  50. Crazy4WVB October 21, 2017 9:52 pm

Cindy was there a recruit visiting?

  51. Kahuna October 21, 2017 10:38 pm

I believe the girl I saw was Riley Wagoner. She was here with her mom and I recognized her mom from a picture on her Instagram .

She is said to be 2019 though so she is not coming in with Trinity and Kamalei.

I would really like to know who we getting for 2018.

  52. Astroboy October 22, 2017 9:14 am

For next year, I assume Faith is the backup setter? But I agree we need someone in the pipe for after that.

  53. Crazy4WVB October 22, 2017 9:51 am

High school seniors for 2018 was pretty much done with in 2017. Only hope is transfers and JC players. Maybe a sleeper or project. Maybe able to get 2019 seniors but most of top players already know where they want to go.

  54. Ron October 22, 2017 10:50 am

As for recruiting, I am hopeful that Angelica might have a European or two she knows about. Also, the sooner they start training Sophia for the pins the better. Kendra is a very decent all around player but we need a terminator at her spot now. In m.o. it should be Kirsten. I also think Ma’afala should move into Clair-Marie’s spot but I do in general like Coaches use of her “smalls”. I like the way that Burns does not give them an excuse to replace her. Castillo is a very smart player and fun to watch. Emily has come such a long way she makes the season worthwhile just to see her continue to grow. We are good enough to beat Cal Poly if every one contributes.

  55. nomu October 22, 2017 12:58 pm

Saw some improvement in arm speed last night by Burns and Castillo. Seem to be playing with more confidence, frankly, taken them long enough.

Imo, players have to show up ready to play, focused. That seems to be their biggest hurdle as far as the mental aspects are concerned. During the game, you should be on autopilot.

Kahakai has matured and is right up there with the best liberos in the country.

Let’s give Robyn and her coaching staff credit where it is due. Also like Angelica always coaching up their players. Coaching is teaching.

    Just my two pennies.

  56. H-Man October 22, 2017 8:54 pm

The player that impressed me is Faith Ma’afala. Very strong at serving; very dependable; count on her to make a good dig and passes well.

  57. connor October 23, 2017 8:20 am

I know that it must bug the coaches, but the SEs exceeding the SA is disturbing. Last four games, -7, -7, even, -5. How can Wahine win against really good teams with that kind of consistency. I further propose that the SAs are inflated due to the caliber of the competition and not the effectiveness of service. That is why it is so frustrating to watch this team this year.

  58. menehune October 23, 2017 8:36 am

IMHO, the outcome of the Cal Poly (and UCI) game will hinge on two things for the Wahine; their serves and the steady play of Granato.

Serving tough is easy but serving tough and keeping it in play is entirely another matter. The Wahine have great blockers so let them do their job, but they can’t if we give up freebies with serves into the net or long and against good teams, we’ll be playing catch up all night if this happens.

Too often, after a timeout or a great play by our side, we give the ball up to the other team by a bad serve. This is such a momentum buster.

And we all know that Granato is a great banger, but I’d rather she play smart, which means tooling the blocks, off speed shots and dinks. Keep them guessing.

No pressure Wahine, just go out there and take care of business.

    GO BOWS.
