Granato, Iosia, Akiu to USA Tryouts

http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2018/2/28/womens-volleyball-three-rainbow-wahine-invited-to-usa-volleyball-national-team-tryouts.aspx
Trio leaves Thursday, second time to tryouts for all three: McKenna Granato, Norene Iosia and incoming transfer Reyn “Tita” Akiu
The U.S. Women’s National Team Open Volleyball Tryouts are Friday-Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The three players will be among 229 athletes from more than 90 colleges and high schools to be evaluated. Each athlete will have one tryout session on Friday, one morning and afternoon session on Saturday and one morning session on Sunday.

Officially announcing Akiu, a 5-2 libero/defensive specialist, has transferred home after three seasons at Texas Tech. The Honolulu-native is a 2015 graduate of Kamehameha Schools—Kapalama. Last year as a junior she played in 29 of the team’s 34 matches with 11 starts. She was the team’s libero in 16 matches but suffered a mid-season injury which held her out of a few games. She finished second on the team with 373 digs and she surpassed the 1,000 career dig milestone last year, ending her Tech career with 1,086 total digs.

Amber Igiede (6’3 MB) from Louisiana committed to the Wahine Indoor for 2019.

Any news on where Lexi Sun will transfer to?

  3. Warriorfan February 28, 2018 6:30 pm

Wow Amber can get up and can really smack the ball, touches 10’5 already she could be touching 10’8 plus during her wahine career. Great get by coach Robyn.

Usc lost twice in beach volleyball wow
This is the year for the wahine to win it all!! especially if Mags decides to not play her senior year next season!

It is also the year for the warriors to win it all as next years final four is on Long beach states home floor.

Wahine are getting some “leapers” the next couple of year with Trinity Castaneda(at 6-1 and touches 10-3) and Amber(at 6-3 and touches 10-5). Hope this will lead to more excitement and bring the huge crowds back.

BTW….is Reyn Akiu at UH now? At Hawaiiathletic.com a headline about the three Wahine heading off for tryouts for Team USA and they have a picture of Reyn in what looks like a Wahine uniform along with Granato and Iosia. If she is currently in school, it would be a boon since she will be able to take part in off season practices and bond with the team. Looking for to seeing her in a UH uniform. We don’t get many former All Conference transfers.

Does she have to redshirt as a transfer? Or did she graduate?

  8. Hot February 28, 2018 8:21 pm

    7. As long as she was released by her previous school and it’s not an in-conference transfer, I don’t think she needs to redshirt/sit out.

  9. Ki February 28, 2018 8:23 pm

    7. I think Akiu is already enrolled. The Las Vegas transfer has to sit out this year.

The unlv transfer is a walk on right?

  11. Kahuna February 28, 2018 9:12 pm

I have no idea if Leka Kiner-Falefa is a walk on or not but she had very good digs number in her only season at UNLV. I think her dig per set average is better than Savannah’s so she is a known commodity.

Maybe she can find financial aid while she redshirt and then take Reyn Akiu’s scholarship when Reyn graduates.

Either way….UH can concentrate on finding hitters and not worry about the libero position for the next couple of year. That position will have lots of D1 level experience.

  12. turfwar February 28, 2018 11:32 pm

Thanks guys. That certainly does take care of a position in need. Saw some video of Akiu and she is certainly worthy of her all Big 12 selection. Very quick and athletic. And videos also show that Amber will be a hammer as a Wahine in time. She talks about being a possible premed major so she’s serious about academics and is a relative newcomer to the game but with a college level training program her future could be whatever she wants it to be.

    Lexi Sun transferring?

    Leka transferred to UH?

  14. po’okela March 1, 2018 12:31 pm

amber looks to be a good one.

one of those under the radar type of players who can make a huge impact and growth at a mid major conference school like UH.

great get for robyn and company.

    4. we knew SC would struggle this year, they lost a lot
    6. it is part of the main post and headline
    7. she’s been released and can play right away. is in school. had to change majors. She was kinesiology, could have graduated from Tech this spring. but some credits didn’t transfer so she has switched to PolySci.

all Ah Mow-Santos has said is they have players coming in but can’t discuss them until paperwork is cleared.
the 2019 are still oral commits.
