Thank you Brian McInnis for video.

Statehood Day celebratory crowd of about 1,000 are here.

They are not keeping statics and are using a scoring system that only the coaches understand where points are awarded for true scoring and taken away for errors.

On the White side currently is who I think are projected starters:

Norene Iosia, Casey Castillo, Sarah Liva, Skyler Williams, Tita Akiu, McKenna Granato, Angel Gaskin. although Faith Ma’afala switched sides to serve leaving assistants Kaleo Baxter and Nick Castello to set the Green side.

Green wins first game 25-20. Score starts at 20.
at the end White had Faith Ma’afala setting and Iosia hitting on the right.

Team had about 30 seconds to switch to game jerseys. Think they’re going to go with traditional scoring.

Before they start playing, players are addressing the crowd, introducing themselves with name, hometown, and position, and thanking the fans.
Natasha Burns is counting herself as a senior but UH will keep her as a junior until official paperwork is filed.
McKenna Ross is not participating, not medically cleared to play.

    Robyn Ah Mow-Santos
in rare form. Introduced herself as a sophomore head coach then asked if fans were ready to see some volleyball.

White led 24-20, Green tied it behind the serving of Casey Castillo Ended 26-24 White on a mistimed set from Iosia to Burns.

Impressed with teams energy, depth , and overall balance. I like this TEAM

Looks like Burns is gone after this season. Hope she goes out with a bang.

  8. Cindy Luis August 17, 2018 4:38 pm

    7. she said earlier in the week she was a senior and intended to graduate. UH waiting on official paperwork to be filed.

Green takes abbreviated Set 4 16-14 as Gaskin hits wide.

  14. Hot August 17, 2018 5:36 pm

Rika Okino also introduced herself as a junior. Isn’t she a redshirt sophomore?

  15. Cindy Luis August 17, 2018 6:40 pm

    14. she is a redshirt sophomore athletically, a junior academically.

The 2nd string beat the 1st team ?

  17. Bleachercoach August 17, 2018 8:23 pm

    16. With 2 males playing on 2nd team always help

Side note: had the pleasure of meeting Claire Marie Anderson last night at the Queen’s Hospital gala. I was impressed, to say the least, she was poised and beamed with an air of confidence. Believe she has the makings of becoming a great doctor.

  19. Ashley August 18, 2018 6:05 am

so does this mean this is Natasha’s last season?

  20. Kazu August 18, 2018 10:58 am

18 I hope Anderson does become a doctor that will decide to practice here in Hawaii. Hawaii can surely use more doctors, and she has the personality to go along with it. Just like i hope Mags goes on to become a Vet.

  21. Cindy Luis August 18, 2018 1:47 pm

    16. there wasn’t really a second string because they had the two male assistants. And as I explained they had several players switching sides during the sets.
    19. it is sounding like it but she hasn’t filed the official paper work.
    20. Anderson is destined to do great things. She wants to do international work, integrating peace resolution and medicine.
Maglio has a lot of volleyball ahead of her. I’m sure she’ll go on to be a great vet if that’s what she wants to do.

Just curious as to why Castaneda wasn’t participating. I thought she was going to be able to since the other freshman, Krug was in there. You know, just to get a few digs/hits under her belt.

Mahalo for all you do, Cindy!

  23. Hot August 18, 2018 3:02 pm

    22. Yeah, that’s a head-scratcher as well. One would’ve thought a scrimmage with two letterwinners injured would be the ideal debut for the year’s lone freshman recruit. I guess she’s redshirting.

On another topic, Gong and Okino were pretty mobile in the back row. Looks like both are ready to contribute, but they’d have to fight Ross and Ma’afala for time in the back row.

    new thread up
    23. whether she redshirts or not has nothing to do with Castanteda’s nonparticipation in the scrimmage. She wasn’t cleared to participate, the same with Ross and Howling.
We’ll see about who’s in the back row besides Akiu.
