For what it’s worth, I would rather see Ma’afala coming off the bench as a reserve and let Iosia be the exclusive setter. Maybe a player doesn’t practice as well but is a gamer. You’ll never know unless you play that player. I’m curious to see how Castenada would do in a match.

  2. ballerz September 14, 2018 4:46 pm

alumnae game is fun to watch. lauren duggins chun still has some attack skills. kanoe kamanao still has the hands. shanteel satele malapeai is snapping the wrist well. coach amo santos waiting to enter the match.

  3. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 4:51 pm

    Set 1: Wahine 25, Rainbows 12
Duggins still runs a nice slide
    And Kamana’o with sweet hands.
Something you rarely heard before this afternoon.
Clare-Marie Anderson in on the block

  4. ballerz September 14, 2018 4:57 pm

2nd set, robin amo santos is putting on a setters clinic.

  5. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 4:57 pm

Ah Mow-Santos setting for the Rainbows. who have Kahakai, Satele, Maeda, Ong, Lelepali.
Wahine have Kamana’o, Duggins, Kane, Anderson, Woolford

I liked Wa Wa’s post from last thread. I think we all have to have some patience for this program to grow. Robyn inherited some of her situation so she has to do the best she can. Just as it took time for Dave to build his program, Robyn needs that same due respect. In the beginning Dave was harsh on the girls as well but over time, mellowed out. Almost the same start that Robyn has. As well as the girls who are trying to execute her game plans. Give them all a chance. We have been too spoiled.

    GO BOWS!

I agree with WaWa and #6 dark fire.
We have been unusually critical of Robyn. I, for one, am happy she returned to lead the program. Can you imagine the comments if the person replacing Dave had no ties to the program or to the island? We would have annihilated someone with no ties. Dave’s retirement was quick, a shock because of the situation, and late in the year. I was relieved it was Robyn. She has also assembled a pretty impressive coaching staff. We need to give them a chance.

In some ways, all of the players are on equal footing with Robyn. No favorites. No standout from last year etc. No favoritism. The incoming seniors, despite it all, have more experience playing at the collegiate level than do our freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. They need practice playing together.

  9. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 5:38 pm

Wahine def. Rainbows 28-26, held off a couple of set points. Ah Mow-Santos and Ljungqvist still have a magical connection. Ljungqvist a couple of slides and a solo block.
they decided to play a third.

  10. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 5:39 pm

    Wahine sweep 15-9

  12. blunite September 14, 2018 6:15 pm

Epiphany: Put Liva at opposite and run the slide for her.

    — She has the best percentage and a live arm.
    — She will shore up the blocking on the right.
    — Burns with Liva presents a better block.
    — Maybe give Liva a shot at D set and let her go 6 rotations.

Williams alternates with Burns at middle. Iosia becomes setter in 5-1. Maafala becomes setter sub. Either Castillo or Granato at L1. Akiu and Okino, no change.

  13. ballerz September 14, 2018 6:36 pm

players give coach robin amo santos a poster board and gifts prior to warmups. a better gift would be a win tonight over the oregon ducks. go bows!

  14. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 6:52 pm

    13. it’s Ah Mow-Santos
Her birthday Saturday. Players gave her roses. I’m sure there is chantilly creme cake later.

  15. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 6:54 pm

    12. you usually run the slide from the middle, and Liva has run it from MB
If Granato could get on track, it would ease a lot of pressure on the other hitters. As someone mentioned, the key is to pass better.

  16. ballerz September 14, 2018 7:09 pm

granato busting out her tools on the spike for a sideout…off speed shot!

  17. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:11 pm

Hawaii led 3-1. Ducks now up 7-3. TO UH.
Vander Weide serving. same server that closed out Set 2 last night in the 7-0 run.

  18. ballerz September 14, 2018 7:12 pm

happy birthday then for coach robin. thanks cindy

  19. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:29 pm

Hawaii does have fight. Oregon serving for the set 24-23. TO UH

  20. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:30 pm

Hawaii with 23 digs already, Akiu with 8.

  21. Chicken Grease September 14, 2018 7:31 pm

How/why was the decision made for the . . . alumni game before a bout with a school hey almost certainly have needed to know would be tough?

  22. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:31 pm

    Gill ends it 25-23.

  23. ballerz September 14, 2018 7:32 pm

great all around play for the wahines. they look determined tonight.

  24. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:34 pm

    21. their choice when to play it. personally think it should be on a Saturday.
Wahine finihsed with 24 digs. The Ducks with 5-1 edge in blocks.

  25. z September 14, 2018 7:34 pm

Okino still letting balls drop in front of her.

18, She spells it Robyn with a Y

  27. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:35 pm

Williams in for Liva in Set 2

  28. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:42 pm

lord you can hear that lift that wasn’t called on Tastad. think i would have called the throw on Raskie. but that’s just me.

  29. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:51 pm

    Castaneda in

  30. ballerz September 14, 2018 7:53 pm

nervous first swing for freshman castaneda

  31. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 7:55 pm

Ducks win 25-10. that was ugly

  32. HawaiiMongoose September 14, 2018 7:56 pm

It’s frustrating that we can play such great defense only to be undone by a completely ineffectual offense. And it’s not just because we lack a terminator; the bigger issue IMHO is the simple lack of connection between our setters and hitters. Too many whiffs, too many dinks, too many free balls because the set doesn’t go where the hitter can really slam it.

  33. Don September 14, 2018 8:04 pm

    28. The officiating is so bad, it detracts from the game. Better officials would be calling the Oregon setter much closer to the standard.

  34. ballerz September 14, 2018 8:07 pm

agree with the lack of calls from up ref

  35. ballerz September 14, 2018 8:13 pm

we need to press the blocks

  36. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 8:16 pm

Hawaii up 15-12 at the TTO. Think the crowd has shamed the up ref in to calling the Oregon setter for lifts.

  37. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 8:25 pm

Oregon has pulled to 22-21. TO UH. not a good rotation when Vander Weide in box serving.

  38. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 8:28 pm

Liva and Castillo stuff Stone. UH up 24-21. TO Oregon.

  39. ballerz September 14, 2018 8:29 pm

  48. Don September 14, 2018 8:50 pm

  49. ballerz September 14, 2018 8:55 pm

    48. agree

  50. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 9:00 pm

    LET the libero get it!

  58. HawaiiMongoose September 14, 2018 9:16 pm

Dinking the ball against Oregon is no better than free-balling it over the net. HIT the ball!

  59. ballerz September 14, 2018 9:17 pm

front row needs to play heads up

  60. Cindy Luis September 14, 2018 9:22 pm

    Ducks win 15-12.

  66. ballerz September 14, 2018 9:31 pm

great match. look forward to our regular season.

  67. Ashley September 14, 2018 9:36 pm

I have to say Angel was on fire tonight. This may convince me that we have a good chance during conference season. Haven’t seen Robyn smile that big until tonight. Despite losing, she should be very proud of her girls. they could have given up after set 2 but they didn’t, they fought to the end. Bravo girls for never quitting.

  68. Warriorfan September 14, 2018 11:43 pm

Obviously not happy with the loss but they know they must play to this level defensively and the leftsides have to produce better for them to beat cal poly and win the conference becauee at this point that is tha only way they can get into the ncaa tournament.

  69. Ichyboy September 15, 2018 11:25 am

Its obvious; the starting six of Granato, Burns, Iosia/Maafala, Liva, Castillo and Akui are the best players we have right now. This is what the coaches have to work with and the players just have to
get better and reduce the unforced mistakes. We’ve seen the bench players in games and they are not better than who we have as starters. If they can correct the passing and serving errors; they will be fine and we will see a faster executed offense. System matches with current talent on team.

  70. Sheila September 15, 2018 4:13 pm

Moral victory to win two games from powerful, quick Oregon. Vastly improved from last week. Rika’s service error in 5th set took the game away. No transition offence and instead pops back to opponent to rip apart. Please let the bench have opportunity in totally loosing games.
