Good luck to the Bows tonight!

For those interested, the Canadian WVB World Championship roster was announced today and the Mags is on the 14 person roster! Nice to have a UH rep. for women at the World’s. Looks like they have a tough bracket with China, Italy, Bulgaria, Turkey and Cuba in their pool. First match starts Sept. 29.

Cal Poly beat Fullerton in three straights set. Only in the first set they struggled a bit and fell behind 4 points until they shaped up. Torrey van Winden was the star of the match as usual, had more than twice as many kills as anyone else.

Interesting to note that Brian Gimillaro was the color commentator for ESPN and he was full of praise for Cal Poly. However, he is more difficult to understand compared to the head announcer. I wonder if he’ll last another season.

A win is a win, but UC Davis gave Hawaii a run.

  21. Cindy Luis September 21, 2018 5:54 pm

    20. as you said, a win is a win. or as Burns would say, a rose is a rose is a rose no matter how you get a kill.
Davis without its leading middle and the big west dig leader libero Bolko. we’ll see what happens at the SSC.
    first road match.

  22. Idunnonuttin September 21, 2018 5:55 pm

    Great win.

  23. Cindy Luis September 21, 2018 5:56 pm

my breaking news story. Stan Lee is at UCD for us and will have print story for tomorrow’s paper
Junior middle Natasha Burns had 13 kills and Hawaii opened Big West volleyball play tonight with a 25-18, 25-21, 26-24 sweep of UC Davis at Davis, Calif.
It was the 10th straight win for the Rainbow Wahine (5-5, 1-0 Big West) over the Aggies (8-6, 0-2), UH’s first road match of the season.
Senior hitters McKenna Granato and Casey Castillo each added 10 kills junior setter-hitter Norene Iosia added her 10th double-double of the season (19 assists-12 digs. Senior libero Tita Akiu had 13 digs for her 10th straight double-digit dig match.
Lauren Matias had 11 kills for UC Davis, losing its third straight. Libero Ally Reyes finished with 19 digs.
Hawaii was outblocked 8-6 but won the dig war 55-46.
The Wahine held off one set point a 24-23 in Set 3, with Iosia’s seventh kill tying it. Kills by senior middle Sarah Liva and Granato completed the sweep for Hawaii, which has taken the last 20 sets off the Aggies.
The Wahine conclude their first road trip at UC Irvine (7-6, 1-0) on Sunday (noon Hawaii time).

    I’m guessing Gaskin didn’t get any kills/blocks?

Congratulations to the Bows over UC Davis!

Congratulations also to Mags! We do miss her dearly!

GO BOWS! Take out UC Irvine and come home victorious!

  25. Sheila September 22, 2018 11:57 am

Use of Middle seems improved. Offence seems ~rank 70 solely due to mediocre setting. Setting should be tailored to the hitter. For example, Angel should be given quick, flat set rather than looping slow set where even grandma alumnae have time to set a roof to block shorter Angel who gives valuable lefty attack. Needs to increase surprise factor by even distribution among hitters and varying the types of attacks. Didn’t see any sliding attack or back-row attack. My personal assessment for game yesterday was ~rank 40.

  26. kahuna September 22, 2018 2:53 pm

#24..what do you mean Gaskin didn’t get any kills or block? The box score had her at 4 kills and one block. It just that she did not hit for a high percentage(hit zero) that have the Hawaii fans concerned.

  27. darkfire35 September 22, 2018 4:25 pm

#26 Yeah, sorry Kahuna, after I posted, I went to look at the box scores. Based my post solely on what Cindy summarized.

#25 Agreed. Setting has been too high and loopy giving the other team a lot of time to set up their blocks. This has been going on since the beginning of the season. It seems Faith is still setting her middles too low. And why no slides? Back row attack near non-existent. Is it the passing problems?

But we still love you girls! Keep on trucking! GO BOWS!

  28. Sheila September 22, 2018 5:14 pm

#27 agreed but let me clarify further. Frankly, most wahine hitters are in disadvantage in height that affects negatively in blocking and % hitting against taller top 20 teams. But optimizing setting strategy, attack variations and quickness can out weigh the drawback of height and can be competitive against top 15. These comments are made to encourage the two setters to use next three games to step up the team offence to next level before Calpoly encounter. With help of coaching staff, wahine could surprise!

    Interesting remark.
