Congrats to Maglio, 2nd team AA

https://www.avca.org/awards/all-regional-all-america-awards/division-i-allamerica.html

Maglio headed to Kansas City to attend the AA banquet which is Friday.
Interviewed her yesterday. AVCA embargoed this until this morning.
Kahuku’s Adora Anae makes 1st team.

Maglio the only player from a non-Power 5 school to make the first two teams.
From the Big West, Cal Poly’s Van Winden sisters and Nelson were honorable mention, as was UCSB’s Ruddins.

She is the 30th Rainbow Wahine to be named to an All-American team, giving the program 58 certificates. Believe she is the 13th UH middle to receive AA.

Will have more of a story in Thursday’s paper
Maglio said she was shocked to receive the honor, said there were a lot of good middles out there and tough competition. Also that she didn’t come into the program looking for honors but to become a better volleyball player.
Said she has about five classes left before graduation and will play beach in spring. Although she has one more year left for UH beach, I am guessing she’ll move on to play professionally indoors.

Maglio had 155 total blocks, averaging a league-best 1.46 blocks per set. She also finished second in the conference with a .381 hitting percentage with 355 kills, 71 errors in 745 total attacks.

Coming into this week, Maglio was 15th nationally in blocks per set and tied for 24th in total blocks.

Congratulations, MAGSnificent! Happy for you. Mahalo for your great performance.

Congrats Maglio! Well deserved! It’s good to see the committee reward her for Defensive and offensive play. I think that was the difference maker. Her kills, kps were I think 7th in conference as a three rotation player and actually was better than AVW so it makes sense to be a 2nd vs. HM this year. I think her points and pps were 5th in BW. Dominated conference in blocking. Her total blocks are lower because some schools had as many as 4 (or more) games in hand prior to post-season play.

She is the protypical “project” player that Hawaii would do well to develop if we can’t get the top recruits.

    Awesome ! Congratulations Mags !!!

As far as she has come, I still see so much more ahead for her. She has so much upside still. I hope she realizes that, and that her coaches and instructors keep challenging her.

Amazing she earned second team honors considering how Hawaii has been shafted in the last two years with Taylor being second team her junior and senior years.

Being the only non-Power 5 awardee is another big honor. A little surprised Cal Poly didn’t get a nod.

Congratulations to Emily Maglio. Not to detract from her accomplishment, I was surprised that Big West Player of the Year, Tayler Nelson from Cal Poly, did not earn second team beside Emily, not even third team. I wonder why.

Agree with being surprised about league champ Cal Poly and POY Nelson
Perhaps Hawaii’s experience with submitting videos and highlights Made a difference
Agree that Taylor should have been 1st team at least once especially as a 6 rotation player
Who knows what goes through the minds of a committee

    Congrats to emily
Wow at Torrey van winden not making any team. That’s a headscratcher her stats were good enough.

Great Big Congrats to Mags! You deserve it!

Congrats Emily! In the Illinois match, the nation saw that you can more than hold your own against their highly touted 6’3″ MB Bastianelli. Seeing is indeed believing! You are among the very best in collegiate volleyball – and you clearly are still improving! Wow!

And thank you Angelica. Your work with the middles – both Mags and Burns, was amazing. My daughter still has the ball that you signed for her when she was just a little girl. It is a highly prized possession in our household.

    Congrats MAGS!

AVCA prolly considered performance in the losses as well. Unlike MAGS, the Van Windens and Nelson stat %s, in their losses, may have been somewhat low.

Face it. Cal Poly players did not get some deserved recognition because the Big West is not a member of the “Big Five.” Hawaii is an exception; it has a long and honored tradition in volleyball, with many “legends” in its history including its coaches. It is no surprise that Robin Ah Mow-Santos said that she receives 150 inquiries per day from prospective players. I wonder how many Cal Poly receives?

BTW. great article in today’s SA. Very nice write-up.

  17. Cindy Luis December 14, 2017 8:42 am

    15. Agree with you on several points. Hawaii does have a reputation and is still considered an elite program. I’m sure Crosson gets plenty of inquiries. He has spoken about how Poly and Hawaii are similar in the difficulties of recruiting, where the schools are located. SLO is kind of isolated, what he said was ‘in a bubble.’
It is hard to sustain success. CP was very good in the 80s under Wilton. That was quite the rivalry for a few years. But like The Beach, programs have a hard time being consistent. And the growing gap between the Haves (power 5) and the Never-Will-Haves will make it harder.

BTW Ah Mow-Santos spells her first name with a Y.

    16. Thank you. Always hard to find a new angle when it’s kind of old news.
