Tita Akiu is leaving tonight for the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. She is one of 45 liberos competing for a spot on one of the U.S. national and collegiate national teams.

“I’m really excited,” she told me this morning. “A goal is to play overseas. This is the first step to making that happen.”

This is the third consecutive year she has been invited to the tryouts. Each athlete will have one tryout session on Friday, one morning and one afternoon session on Saturday and one morning session on Sunday.

Tamari Miyashiro is one of the USA assistants.

The team had a two-hour practice this morning in renovated Gym II. Players say they are enjoying the AC. Gym I, which is being renovated as well, could be pretty miserable.

The Wahine will be back for their 20-hour schedule next week. The two transfers are in the gym: Kyra Hanawahine and Jolie Rasmussen.

Coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos said the two have brought good energy and work ethic. With only nine players not enough to do 6-on-6 scrimmages
Contract for spring match not signed yet so UH not releasing information. Texas posted that it will be out here during spring break to play Hawaii but nothing official yet.

9 players? Did we add another player or Kamalei Krug is ready to go. I thought I read somewhere that Kamalei had knee surgery recently and is out of spring practice. Of course, the poster could be wrong so I don’t know.
    Norene
    Kirstin
    McKenna
    Rika
    Skyler
    Janelle
    Kyra
    Jolie
    Kamalei

I think the team can scrimmage if all the coaches get involved.

Also…since Akiu has aspirations to continuing playing volleyball after this season, Robyn should allow her to practice with the team. It would help both parties. TIta can stay in shape and continue to work on her game and UH will have an extra body for practice.

1-2. Said they only had 9 players, didn’t say all were participating this morning. Krug was not.
They can use coaches to scrimmage. Just saying they don’t have enough players to do so.
Akiu was on the court his morning.

I’m guessing Amber, Braelyn, Tiffany and Riley haven’t or aren’t able to join the team yet?

    Good luck Akiu!! GO BOWS!

Not sure if it was posted anywhere, but just wanted to mention that both men’s matches vs. UC Irvine will be streamed on ESPN 3.

If no other setter joins the team, whom will coach cross train to be backup?

  8. Hot March 1, 2019 9:11 am

Hanawahine is on scholarship. Krug is a walk-on.

Is the term “invited” appropriate? It’s an open tryout, paid for by the athlete or school, with the goal to be invited for future training. Akiu will be one of 45 liberos trying out, some of whom barely see the court in their own teams. Kristina Kam went to one of these.

    4. the ones you mention are finishing their senior years in high school so no they aren’t with the team yet.
    8. Hanawahine would be the backup setter but they’re still working on bringing in someone else.
    10. It is an open tryout but she was invited to come.
