Toeaina hauls in PoW

Sarah Toeaina’s clutch performance resulted in her second career Big West player of the week honor.

Toeaina got the nod today, a day after she hit the game-winning free throws in Hawaii’s 64-63 overtime win over San Diego in the Rainbow Wahine Bank of Hawaii Classic.

UH (3-1) needed all of Toeaina’s 20 points against the Toreros (3-1); she had a number of big buckets late. She averaged 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds, and shot 15-for-29 (51.7 percent) in UH’s two wins last week. The Rainbow Wahine pulled away from Northern Arizona on Friday.

The 5-foot-11 senior’s jumper hasn’t been falling consistently, so she’s made an effort to take the ball hard to the rim on drives and post up smaller players when the opportunity presents itself.

Cindy Luis’ write-up of Toeaina’s strong finish Sunday is here.

The Rainbow Wahine now prepare for a tougher tournament in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown, which starts Friday against Marist. UH follows against Purdue on Saturday and USC on Sunday.

    Well deserved
Good thing she didn’t leave when she had the chance.
