Warriors prepare for recruiting spree

The two new hires — defensive coordinator Corey Batoon and assistant head coach/linebackers coach Mark Banker — were set to arrive in town this weekend.

They spent the past few days checking up on the recent signed commitments on the mainland.

The Warriors are preparing for this weekend’s recruiting visits. They plan to use all eight of their remaining initial scholarships on the Feb. 7 signing day.

1st or 2nd. No false alarm today ?

  2. islandman January 14, 2018 8:53 am

Niumatalolo won’t be going to Arizona apparently because the QB there doesn’t want to run the triple option.

  3. H-Man January 14, 2018 9:30 am

Football in the back on my mind, but yesterday’s frightening experience remains in the forefront, for now at least.

  4. al January 14, 2018 9:32 am

Hopefully we have a complete staff in a few days.
    As this will impact recruiting.

  5. islandman January 14, 2018 9:34 am

What are the safeguards for the USA launching a missile by mistake ?

  6. kev-1 January 14, 2018 9:39 am

No disrespect to Coach Nuimatalolo, but there aren’t very many players, teams, or fans that want the triple option. However, I do believe that with more QB talent, Nuimatalolo can put together an interesting and effective hybrid version.

  7. al January 14, 2018 9:40 am

Yesterday, I wasn’t concerned because I didn’t think it was real.

The tell tale indicator was that there were no whaling sirens to be heard.
Relatives in Japan would have known and I did not receive any notice from them.
I also believed that we have the capacity to intercept any aerial attack such as a long range missile.

    #5:

we have a very strict and exact process to launch nuclear weapons with the President being the “final gun” to press the button

my concern is whether the General or Flagg officers will, in fact, agree with the President’s order to fire

all military personal, regardless of branch or rank, know that we must “obey every LAWFUL order — that’s what got Lt Calley in trouble in Viet Nam — his order to shoot unarmed women and children in Mai Lai village was NOT an lawful order

Kevin Gilbride hired as Bears TE coach. WTG Kevin.

  10. A-House January 14, 2018 9:51 am

    good neighbor:

your initial comments to open the blog today says it all – – no mention of additions to fill out the staff until after their arrival

did they not also chat with verbal commits to ease any apprehension of signing the LOI on 2/7/18?

perhaps one or more possible recruits call them to schedule meetings or are they still in the “dark period” of no contacts with recruits?

hope Panoke is one of the 8th on 2/7/18 — believe he is a play maker at WR

what about the other WR at St Louis? still mulling over Stut’z offer? the slightly built, but fast and shifty WR with good hands — 5’10” at 150#s.

  11. A-House January 14, 2018 9:55 am

holy, kaka moley! nearly half way thru January 2018!!!!!!!!!

but, this brings us closer to 2/7/18 and start of Spring practice

“all hands on deck”! wade ashore and stay alive! watch them birds around us! over hill and dale!

way back when, in the late 40s/eary 50s time frame, I watched the movie, “The 5 Sullivans”

true story of 5 brothers who wanted to serve together on the same ship and all lost their lives in battle which prompted the War Department to issue orders that no siblings can serve together and if a remaining sibling is alive and one or more died, that person will be pulled out and discharged

remember the movie “Saving Private Ryan”

    make that 4!!!

  15. Inyoface January 14, 2018 10:16 am

Mariota didn’t have adequate protection. That penalty on Decker for PI was a joke.

  16. suckkabooya January 14, 2018 10:21 am

If Timoteo can work on getting off his defender better so he can get into his route quicker then hopefully he can get into more packages. He plays with an edgy, chippy, fire, that quite frankly nobody else showed last season, especially our seniors. He maybe gets a little out of position because of the over aggression but he blocks people the way Smith-Schuster of the Steelers blocks people, with bad intentions. We need to see more of that kind of passion on the field, and hopefully get some from our new seniors.

  17. islandman January 14, 2018 10:34 am

    8. But the federal government has made boo-boos before.
As far as the State, the paper, on page A16, says the employee clicked on the wrong computer screen button on a routine test. He should have a supervisor verifying what he is doing.
So what safeguards do N Korea, China and Russia have against launching a missile by mistake ?

Two days ago, the blog said Nick interviewed several DL and OL coaches last week. Any WR coaches ?

Mr. A-House, I noticed that when I post several times in a row, the robot pics come up. I got the checkmark right away for this post.

Kevin Sumlin apparently now headed to Arizona Wildcats

  22. H-Man January 14, 2018 12:08 pm

Is Baraka Beckett that good? Better than Blessman Ta’ala? If he is, then the Bruins got a good one.

  23. Kahuna January 14, 2018 12:41 pm

#22….Not sure how good Baraka Beckett is but don’t look too much into him signing with UCLA. I don’t think he had an offer from UCLA previously with Mora the HC. Now that Chip Kelley has taken over, Kelley probably needed to fill spots so he looked for the next best player and an easy sign…..Beckett fell into that category. All the hotshots have already signed.

  24. Kahuna January 14, 2018 12:47 pm

Btw…..Beckett was a 2 Star according to Scout.com and was only offered by schools like Army, Columbia, Cornell, UH, UNLV. Not exactly UCLA level type player so Beckett looks to me like a “fill the roster” or practice type player.

  25. Kahuna January 14, 2018 12:50 pm

Blessman is three stars with offers from UH, Oregon State, UNLV and Colorado. Who you would pick if you was to choose?

  26. Old School Dave January 14, 2018 1:01 pm

Looking forward to seeing Blessman in the spring. Same with Russell and Mermea.

Hope UH takes down those Cold War era FALLOUT SHELTER signs on campus 🙁

“Ige & Miyagi: They’ll tell us what to do.”

  27. Ipu Man January 14, 2018 2:07 pm

In Japan, office workers have hard hats under their desks
which they don quickly when they get an earthquake.
I’d like to have a UH helmet by my bed. Hey Rolo.
You can sell a million authentic UH helmets to help the
    citizens and fans…and your budget. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  28. suckkabooya January 14, 2018 3:11 pm

I can see Blessman gaining 15-20 more pounds of bulk and still maintain most of his range and medium speed motor. Or he can put on 25-30 pounds and be immovable. His legs and backside can get 20 pounds alone. And wait until his upper body develops, the next Chris Brown coming.

  29. suckkabooya January 14, 2018 3:44 pm

Some coaches favor the “chop tackle” over “wrapping up” the ball carrier . Either way, gotta keep your head up. I Feel bad for that guy.

  30. kapakahi January 14, 2018 3:52 pm

Timely hiring of OL Coach could help with recruiting OL…..the remaining primary recruiting priority position…….to backfill void since losing Allen, Wa’a, Posa, Norman (in addition to Tupai)…..along with replacements for Taylor (transferred to ECC) & Hauani’o (medical retirement) from Class of 2016.

Picked up Manning & Levao in early signing period……so probably need to sign at least 3 more OL All moot now…..but BB would’ve been a nice addition at OL.

  31. burro sabio January 14, 2018 4:11 pm

I’m more curious if those already here like Aviu, Bernal-Wendt, Elkington, and even Austin Webb are ready to step up.

  32. Paniolo January 14, 2018 4:33 pm

8 scholarships left to award? I would presume their will be a few more Offensive lineman, but unfortunately the new OL coach has not been announced. I would presume the new OL coach should be on board to recruit potential high school athletes before the February 6 signing or commitment day.
That goes also for the new receiver coach…

  33. oldie January 14, 2018 4:42 pm

islandman #7 – You may want to watch Fail Safe starring Henry Fonda. May give you a clue to how safe we are.

Like al #7 I did not believe the message when I first saw it. Turned to CNN – nothing. Turned to HHNL – nothing. Turned to KSSK – nothing. Figured either hacked or mistake.

  34. kapakahi January 14, 2018 4:45 pm

Bernal-Wendt suited up for the last few games in 2017 so may be closer to stepping up than the others. Tuulima, Graves, Sunia, Vanderpool, & Kipper will probably be counted on to step up. Regardless still need to add OL depth…….especially in case of injuries.

Even with Levao on-board, might be iffy fielding a complete 2-deep OL for Spring Ball (with Ulu-Perry injured late last season)…..unless sign more mid-year JC transfers and/or add some more OL walk-ons.

  35. islandman January 14, 2018 5:50 pm

    33. Thanks, i looked at the summary of that which led to Dr. Strangelove.
I also turned to KSSK and they had Perry on a rerun show and then i turned to AM 690 which had Mike Buck discussing termites.

  36. Maddog50 January 14, 2018 6:34 pm

With 8 left look for 4 more OL I know of two in the mix. Still need 2 DL for a total of six. Last two will probably be athletes. Think Becket is a body for them and don’t really care he’s gone-GoWarriors

  37. raider dog January 14, 2018 7:10 pm

Coach Ken Nuimatalolo made a smart decision. He is the highest paid Govt Employee, he gets free housing, a pretty secure job, free medical for the rest of his life and soon to be the highest pension in the federal government. Why give this up for all the stress and job insecurity at Arizona.

  38. iceebear January 14, 2018 7:38 pm

NK safeguard is that if you make a mistake and launch a missile at the US, they take you right outside and shoot you, but perhaps a moot point.

  39. Captain Ron January 14, 2018 7:48 pm

    SteveM January 14, 2018 8:01 am

I was about to disembark the Pride of America cruise ship at Pier 2 when the Captain closed the gangway when the alert arrived. Why? I wondered… why not let everyone off to seek shelter?

Then I realized there was very little shelter on land and the Captain likely meant to keep the passengers aboard and flee out to sea, figuring there was still hours to run. If there was indeed a hit and the ship survived far out enough, it could evacuate us to the mainland. A sobering scenario, but give NCL America and the Captain credit for trying to save the passengers.

    SteveM,
If the captain was thinking what you think he was thinking, then he was lacking information. The flight time for an ICBM from North Korea to here is about 20 minutes. Since the ship was already tied up and ready for disembarking, I don’t think there is any way he could have readied the ship, untied, and gotten any beneficial distance out to sea before the arrival of a missile. I’m sure he had a reason, maybe even a good one, but getting the ship underway was not very likely.

  40. roygbivs January 14, 2018 7:59 pm

    Sign more DB’s and playmakers….

On player(s) who decommit, when there is no coaching changes, I believe, will transfer out again because they just don’t know what the want to begin with.

    Let’s go Warriors!!!

Ps. Let’s get some coaches without Hawai’i ties

    Ps

    33.

Did you see “Being There” starring Peter Sellers?

    Amazingly relevant film.

Got the tip from Keith Olbermann’s podcast.

  42. 808WarriorFan January 14, 2018 9:58 pm

Just hoping … Just saying … w Mark Banker on board is there an “outside chance” that he could talk Coach Cav into changing his mind and signing on as OL Coach …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS … !!!!!

    Great Morning All!

…from the land of lost wages.

That last play musta looked ama-a-a-yyy–zing on a TV!
Unfortunately, all I was looking at then was a plane thru the glass of an airport gate lobby.

  45. Akamai Okole January 15, 2018 6:41 am

    islandman,

I no think he needed to talk to N E WR coach prospects.

    Happy MLK Day!
Hopefully no false or real alarms this week.
I keep looking for word of the new coaches but the long weekend must have gotten in the way of processing and announcements?

  48. H-Man January 15, 2018 7:26 am

Got my football hat on today. So any news of coaches and commits?

  49. A-House January 15, 2018 7:58 am

back in 1962 during ROTC class — advisor said it would take about 30 minutes from China to Hawaii — back then, China was the nuclear threat — bend over and kiss your ass goodbye

most effective nuclear blast would be about 1 mile high to maximize the blast, heat, shock wave, and radiation — if target center was Pearl Harbor — all the ships; all the fighter aircraft; PACOM -would be destroyed

everything within a 5-mile radius would be totally destroyed except concrete high rise which would be a “shell” — the “fire ball” would suck all the oxygen — let’s see 5-miles out westward would include Nanakui and Mililani and east to Niu Valley

with today’s improved technology, it would take less than 20 minutes from launch to reach Hawaii — what is one to do with 20 minutes if you are driving on the freeway or on the beach or surfing

let us hope it never happens to Hawaii or any part of the USA>

  50. burro sabio January 15, 2018 8:12 am
