Warrior Beat: Ursua reaches the semis

Things are looking in the right direction for John Ursua, who was named one of 11 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best receiver. / Photo by Stephen Tsai

Following today’s 90-minute practice, slotback John Ursua was told he was one of 11 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver.

Ursua leads the nation in touchdown receptions (15). He is fourth in receiving yards (1,161), sixth in receiving yards per game (105.5) and ninth in catches per game (7.2).

Ursua also demonstrated his new look — a haircut that left a small tail.

UH has set up a Web site for Ursua: Ursua5.com

We need to hire that North Texas hoops coach before anybody else does. Guy can coach and recruit.

  3. tom-warriornation November 12, 2018 11:15 am

UNLV has a solid defensive front 7; a fast shifty running back Lexington Thomas; and a bruising 270 lb fullback! So we need to bring our A game!

  4. tom-warriornation November 12, 2018 11:17 am

Why don’t our offense use a man in motion to see what the opposing defenses’ coverage is?

  5. tom-warriornation November 12, 2018 11:20 am

Still say we need to do swing passes to our RB’s especially Elijah Dale, who has shown nice moves against defensive players. He has shown this with his kickoff returns.

  8. iGrokSpock November 12, 2018 2:24 pm

To get to the next level of this competition (the finals) of the Biletnikoff, Ursua needs to snag every ball thrown his way. He can do it yes he can.

  9. H-Man November 12, 2018 2:25 pm

If Hawaii plays like they have been the past 4-5 games, and UNLV plays like they did against SDSU, Hawaii will lose by 2-3 TDs. I think Hawaii has a better chance of beating San Diego St

Guarenteeing the 38-30 win. Hawaii over UNLV.

  17. oneseason November 12, 2018 5:45 pm

Interesting that there are no Hawaii Bowl seats in the North end zone (R through RR) for sale on UH’s ticket site. Hopefully that means somebody is sure Hawaii will be going and wanted to reserved seats for all their friends.

    Re #14

That dude is a potential gamebreaker for us.

  19. cappie the dog November 12, 2018 6:35 pm

I remember North Texas turning down an offer to join the WAC.

For them, I guess it didn’t make geographical sense.

Louisiana Tech joining the WAC totally messed up their women’s college basketball program.

If Hawaii was in the Sun Belt or MAC, at least they would have access to different recruiting hot spots. Maybe they could recruit all the Texas players who were headed for the FCS.

  20. 808bowler November 12, 2018 8:19 pm

Have as good feeling this game. I believe Hawaii will win

  21. ai-eee-soos November 12, 2018 11:55 pm

#14 and #17. Found this, when left Cal …

The sophomore is a former four-star recruit who enrolled early at UC Berkeley. As a true freshman for the Bears, Stovall hauled in 42 catches for 415 yards and forced missed tackles on 18.8 percent of his catches. He played in two games in the 2017 season before an injury caused him to miss the remainder of the team’s games.

Because of the injury, Stovall received a medical redshirt. As such, he will have two remaining seasons of eligibility.

*** A spokesperson for Cal football confirmed Stovall’s departure, adding, “Melquise had been

suspended previously for conduct detrimental to the team and

has decided to leave the program.” ***

    —————————————————
I hope everything will work out fine.

  22. cappie the dog November 13, 2018 5:28 am

Stovall is a name that catches my attention.

    Andre Stovall was Hawaii’s Rudy.

Last man on the bench, but he was pressed into duty by Coach Wallace against Fresno State in a WAC Tournament game and made a basket around the rim late in regulation time. AND HE WAS FOULED! Those WAC refs really jobbed Hawaii.

I talk about this game so much.

Fresno State and Hawaii looked like North Carolina and Duke.

    Mike McIntyre

    RIP

    Played like a Warrior.

The game, I remember, began with Johnny White banking in a three.

  23. NotNasti November 13, 2018 7:48 am

Recruit linemen. We need linemen. Please.

  24. Savich November 13, 2018 7:52 am

    Guaranteeing a win.

  25. Savich November 13, 2018 8:03 am

38 points because of rest on offense. Fresh legs.

    Defense must hold.

  26. suckkabooya November 13, 2018 8:31 am

Cole McDonald =Taysom Hill. Take advantage of all of his skills. Teach him everything.

How about one wildcat series like Nevada did to us. McDonald, Sunia (extra lineman lined as TE) one TE (so two TE’s) , one H, (for blocking) Ursua. and Byrd, Armstrong-Brown or Ward.

One series with two backs (any two, one in pistol, one offset) and run it like a veer version of run/pass option (with pitches too) only difference would be shotgun. If we going run lets run. Let the linemen know so they can “blast” someone

If were going to run to set up the pass then “lets run”. Get creative as possible to take advantage of McDonald’s skillsets. He will be NFL’s next Taysom Hill.

  27. H-Man November 13, 2018 9:36 am

Lots of linemen returning. 17 on offense. 20 on defense, Let’s see how they play the last two games after much needed R&R.

  28. anywaaays!!! November 13, 2018 10:00 am

recruit linemen on both ends of the ball and corners and safeties. Also, sure-handed receivers. Actually, recruit EVERYBODY.

  29. anywaaays!!! November 13, 2018 10:02 am

i love kaimana padello but ideally, we should have defensive ends and outside pass rushers who are bigger than him and more physically gifted but with the same motor and technical skills, if not more.

  30. suckkabooya November 13, 2018 11:20 am

If you are going to run deliberate plays I’d like to suggest using Manase Time as a blocker (H back) on bubble screens or swing passes (two plays that are not in the playbook right now). That guy would be a good second level blocker. For sure. Please keep it in mind.

UH football seems to be an afterthought with all of this talk of a new multi-purpose stadium and attracting more concerts. Sad, considering what Gov Burns had envisioned for UH.

Hell, they should just put up some stands (35,000) that can be eventually converted to permanent, concrete ones and expanded in the future in the Lower Campus.

    https://www.khon2.com/news/local-news/state-senator-says-aloha-stadium-needs-new-facility/1592477657

“If UH no can recruit 4-5 star players, da coach should be fired and dey should hire someone who can!”

  32. A-House November 13, 2018 12:37 pm

Termite Palace had its hey day with nearly 25-26,000 or more packed in with very limited parking around the stadium

take the “park” back and build out from there including purchasing the old Bowl-O-Drome lot next door to expand seating to 35,000 – 40,000 with luxury sky-boxes for ownership or rent — believe Kamehameha owns the land

“bus-in” fans who can park at “outside-of town” locations for a nominal fee — UH students can walk from campus and residents can be “walk-in” fans like before.

new stadium must be owned and operated by UH — add business space around the exterior for year-round use — hire “experienced” people to operate the stadium — hire UH students for clean-up crew or ushers, ticket sellers at the main entrance, ticket takers at gates, etc.

plan for other uses of stadium for year-round use

    31.

That area could never handle that kind of influx of people. It may have worked back in the day, but times have changed

  34. Boolakanaka November 13, 2018 1:20 pm

Hmmmn, unless you are a consistent top 25 team year in and year out, most coaches, and I’m referring to the remaining 95 percent of those in D1 programs, do NOT have four or five star recruits. As you can clearly see, even program in the 11-25th range have mostly 3 star recruits ….see:https://247sports.com/Season/2018-Football/CompositeTeamRankings/

  35. cappie the dog November 13, 2018 3:15 pm

The Power 5 should break away from the NCAA.

    Pay them.

    They’re getting paid anyway.

The remaining FBS schools should fold into the FCS.

I hope I don’t sound like a troll who wants Hawaii to drop down to DII.

I think this is how you fix college football.

  36. cappie the dog November 13, 2018 3:44 pm

I just looked at the College Football Playoff Poll.

It makes me want to stop watching sports.

Northwestern is ahead of Utah State.

Northwestern lost to Akron at home.

They beat Rutgers by three points.

    So what is Central Florida?

Not good enough to play with the Alabamas of the world, but would dominate against the likes of Utah State and Boise State as if they were a Power 5-like team?

    And look at Penn State.

They move up six spots for beating Wisconsin, a team that got by a one-win Rutgers team by two possessions at home a weak earlier.

You need somebody on the committee that isn’t biased against non-Power 5 schools.

  37. turfwar November 13, 2018 4:06 pm

Cappie, JJ had the most out of the box thinking years ago when he stated that the non power 5 teams would be better off if they did break away fro the NCAA and change the season from Fall to Spring. They would then be better able to compete for TV money now being dominated by the power 5 schools. The NCAA would also help if they took away any penalty for transferring to non power5 schools. Not having to sit out a season would help to even out the talent.
