Warrior Beat: Governors’ ball

Students from Farrington High’s Friends program attended today’s UH football practice at the grass practice field.

Afterward, the UH coaches and players signed autographs and posed for pictures.

It was a particularly proud time for defensive end Manly “Pumba” Williams, a Farrington graduate.

Manly Williams and his former teacher, Iwa Tiave

“It was nice to see them come out here,” Williams said. “I take pride in where I come from, where I grew up. I’m a Kalihi boy. I love it. There was no place I’d rather spend my childhood than Kalihi.”

During practices, Williams wears a white helmet with the Governors’ “G” logo on one side and “Saints” on the other. His uncle and namesake — Manly Williams — is a Saint Louis School graduate who played linebacker at UH.

    Off-topic BUT…

The 2019 Warrior Volleyball season is less than 3 months away!
    From Coach Charlie Wade:
“The 2019 UH Men’s Volleyball Team is readying for a shot at the National Title. Coach Wade is preparing the squad with a scrimmage with Nittaidai University in Japan in November.

2019 tournament teams include Pepperdine, USC and BYU. Please consider supporting our boys by joining the UHMVB Boosters. They (the boys) are always appreciative.”

This is the best and easiest way to get to know the coaches and players. Participate in post-game potlucks, host a post-game meal, attend pregame “chalk talks” given by the coaches, help in coordinating/planning for various functions.

    Online Membership form: https://online.uhfoundation.org/memberships/MVB.aspx

    GO WARRIORS!

I’m a teacher and co-adviser of the Friends Program at Farrington. I’m a big fan of the team so it was a thrill for me to attend practice. Thanks to Cindy at UH for setting this up. Rolo and the team were very gracious in meeting with our students, taking pictures, and signing autographs. They even were nice enough to record a video saying a few encouraging words to my brother who is battling leukemia (and also a big fan). We also got to see Gov alumni Pumba and Justin U. It was nice to know all of the players (and coaches) I cheer for on Saturday are nice people off the field. Made me proud to be a Warrior fan! Live Aloha / Play Warrior!

Ok, need to include QB Justin Uahinui, a Farrington grad.

Welcome Govs, the Pride of Kalihi!
When I saw today;s blog, this song (played after touchdowns) came to mind… I heard it too many times when my high school played them… 🙁

Manly Williams was a beast in his days.

  11. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2018 8:14 pm

Manly Williams (the original) was great on that circle-back block on returns. Just a trail of fallen Buffanblu, Warriors, Monarchs …

  12. clyde October 17, 2018 10:40 pm

Manly Williams was a beast at the free-throw line. Just ask a certain Punahou player who shall go nameless. Ahhh, da stuff of legends.

  13. Savich October 17, 2018 11:51 pm

Warriors will lose one at home. Change of heart.

I recall last season against BYU Hawaii got man handled and Diocemy St Juste rushed for like 30 yards. So history repeated itself this season and Hawaii got man handled again by BYU.

This years team is even younger that last years team and has a lot of growing pains and learning before they can be a top 25 ranked team. And they have 5 more games to prove it!

We knew that the last 7 games of the season is the murders row portion of the schedule and no bye week either.

Now starts the MWC murders row portion of the schedule:

Nevada at Aloha Stadium *Home Game
Fresno State at Bull Dog Stadium (Homecoming Game) *Road Game
Utah State at Aloha Stadium *Home Game
UNLV at Aloha Stadium *Home Game
SDSU at Aloha Stadium *Home Game

Last 5 games of teams that will probably be favorites to beat Hawaii, except maybe UNLV.

But on the bright side, 1 road game at Fresno and 4 games at home in Aloha Stadium.
Anytime Hawaii plays at Aloha Stadium (Home) the Warriors level of intensity, pride and swag increases.

    Live Aloha/Play Warrior
    Go Warriors of Hawaii

    Baby steps.

Get that seventh win; get bowl-eligible.

UNLV should be that seventh win.

    Everything else is gravy.

Utah State should be in the Top 25.

I would rather Hawaii face Boise State.

  16. cappie the dog October 18, 2018 6:32 am

There was a Larry Little-era team that was in first place at the outset of the season.

I think it was a team with Clarence “Pop” Dickinson.

But then they played their first road game.

    And that was that.

Enjoy being in first place for the time being.

But I think a win against Nevada is a 50/50 proposition.

    I live in hope.

New Yoko Ono album out tomorrow.

In the mid-eighties, to support her album “Starpeace”, she was booked to play the Neal Blaisdell Center.

Due to lack of interest, the concert was cancelled.

When I returned the tickets to the box office, I asked the cashier, “How many people bought tickets?”

“You’re the only one,” she replied, smiling sweetly.

The Ono album is a nice companion piece to the awesome “Imagine” box set.

  22. Boolakanaka October 18, 2018 8:11 am

But I saw at the old school breaking the wedge block—Max “mad max” Maneafaiga….dat sole use to smoke fools on kickoffs—like a bowling bowl to pins.

He was the best I saw in HS ball, the best in college, was no doubt the terror himself—Semeri Ulufale a legend of both Governors and UH football….nuff said.

These UH basketball boys got their rap game on:

    13

    SDSU is a road game

  25. oldtimer808 October 18, 2018 9:09 am

#21 I so remember Semeri Ulufale. He was worth the price of admission watching him tearing down the field on kickoffs and busting up the wedges

  26. Boolakanaka October 18, 2018 10:46 am

Oldtimer, I remember a game, when Semeri was paid the ultimate compliment and a player on the receiving team wedge, basically did the old bullfighter trick of jumping out of his way at the last second — he wanted no part of that sole!

  27. Maddog50 October 18, 2018 10:49 am

Still by far the biggest regular season game since 08. All the chips in-I just want to think about Nevada period! GoWarriors!!!!

Cappie, if you want to hear mindless screaming just listen to my sister in law for 15 minutes. You would pay her to stop.
