Visitors’ weekend

Another Saturday, another overcast day.

For the Warriors, there’s a bright spot to this weekend. There are five recruits on official visits.

The Warriors are hopeful of signing more than half the 2018 recruiting class on Dec. 20, the first day of the new three-day early signing period.

* * * * *

A guy asks a girl to the prom.

She says, “sounds good,” but no promises … yet.

The guy asks a second time. She says, “still sounds good,” but no pinky-swear promises … yet.

She finally decides to go to the prom with a Florida guy she met at a camp in Oregon. They have the best time.

The guy tried — twice — it didn’t work out.

The girl clearly went with her heart, even if her prom date is expected to move to Nebraska next year.

There should be no apologies or regrets. That’s life. Wish everybody the best — and move on.

Gray shirts and blue shirts count as new signees.

  23. Stephen Tsai December 2, 2017 12:06 pm

Also, there aren’t 25 scholarships to give.
Teams have to be very precise this recruiting class. A team may only sign 25 players to binding letters. That means 1) Can’t over-sign and 2) If a guy doesn’t qualify, his letter can’t be replaced

  24. KOH I NOR December 2, 2017 12:07 pm

There will be an at-large bid to #6 for UCF Knights. 6 team championships in 2018′. Notre Dame and Stanford is out.

I think in the two years here Coach Rolovich has laid a groundwork of “niceness” surrounding “his” program. It may seem a little “soft” right now but to a recruits parents, especially mothers, they might say ” hmm, how about Hawaii”. You can tell Rolo is trying really hard to impress upon the program supporters (like us the rabid fans and even the joe bandwagon folks) and viewers from the mainland that he is doing things “local style”. Maybe it has affected the product on the field somewhat (all the managing of the groundwork) but the effort put in will be priceless. Once the “groundwork” brings in what he’s looking for he can shift the focus more on the product. Coach Naeole was a frank, crass, tough, hardnosed individual who seemed willing to take a bullet (maybe literally) for his kids. Too bad they (he and Rolo) couldn’t get it together because they would be a good compliment to each others (Naeole just needs a little more savvy) strengths as “local style” people parents of recruits would be willing to entrust their sons to. Too bad. It’s still early in Rolo’s tenure so i’m not going to worry yet. I’ll try to “trust the process”.

  26. Maddog50 December 2, 2017 12:26 pm

Okay Maama Taala and Ernie are possible signees-don’t know of any other blues or grays-but gotta have somewhere around 20 or so not including theses guys I think….uh maybe!

Mr. Tsai, in the world according to some individuals, if the boy asked the girl twice and she didn’t go to the prom with him, he didn’t ask at all or should have been fired for not being successful. Others would say that the boy should have held the shotgun on the girl and forced her (giving new meaning to a shotgun wedding).

Hey ….. If Milton transfers to Manoa.

will he have 2 years to play 2 ?

    Come on home, Milton.

  29. islandman December 2, 2017 1:05 pm

Run n Shoot of the past vs Balanced offense ?
UCF today had 40 pass plays and 39 Rushing = 62 pts. / Memphis, 44 pass plays and 45 rushing = 55 pts.
UH had 50.2 % pass plays this season but did better last season with 52 % running plays.

  30. ai-eee-soos December 2, 2017 1:07 pm

    Come on home, Jordan Taamu.

  31. Inyoface December 2, 2017 1:07 pm

Who knows if McKenzie had stayed home if he would be as good as he is at UCF. Sometimes staying around familiar things can get you ditrsacted. When moving away you can pretty much only focus on one thing.

  32. KOH I NOR December 2, 2017 1:18 pm

UCF Knights will play for the #4 spot in January of 2018′ AAC. 12-0 season. National title and McKenzie Milton, QB.

  33. ai-eee-soos December 2, 2017 1:23 pm

    # 30.

    Agreed.

But, we now know what Milton can do.

Come on home Milton. Your coach is on his way to Lincoln, Nebra$$$$$$$$$$ka.

  34. KOH I NOR December 2, 2017 1:23 pm

5-11 is McKenzie Milton, UCF Knights. ” eh, better than you. ” Out of Mililani high school, Honolulu. Trojans.

  35. KOH I NOR December 2, 2017 1:26 pm

Waiting for the ACC title game, Miami versus Clemson. This afternoon.

    Katakawa…

  37. ai-eee-soos December 2, 2017 3:09 pm

    Come on home, Milton.

Scott Frost will have a seven-year, $35 million contract
    at his alma mater

UCF athletic director Danny White said during a Saturday press conference that Frost will coach the Knights’ bowl game, which will likely be the Peach Bowl.

  38. burro sabio December 2, 2017 7:36 pm

Somehow, some way, UH needs to make tuition free for Hawaii residents. On top of helping local kids get a college education, walk-ons can afford to stay home instead of going away for a scholarship at a smaller school on the continent.

  39. DaveLetterMan December 2, 2017 8:37 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!
From the LV Review-Journal, Tony Sanchez said he will be deliberate about his decisions to change his staff even if there is external heat to make them. He said, “You have to make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. If you want to do the popular thing, you can make a change right after the game, but it doesn’t make any sense. There’s a right way to do things, and no matter what we do, we’re always going to try to make sure we make the right decision by UNLV.”
Let’s have faith in Rolo. Give him some time to make his decisions about his staff and without any external heat. I believe he’ll make the right decisions by and for UH.

  40. H-Man December 2, 2017 9:03 pm

Did you see McKenzie Milton successfully execute the option plays in OT?

  41. Kamaunu December 2, 2017 10:08 pm

Back to Rolo… The 400k he is making is a lot more than he would be making had we went down with the Nevada ship that he help sink. Dude would be making a fraction of that as QB coach in the MAC.

  42. Old School Dave December 3, 2017 6:25 am

Agree with ST. Nuff, already!! Good for the Mililani grad, but this it is water under the bridge. This doesn’t concern UH Football. You going to continue to cry over your beer about his decision and success?

Different sport, but it reminded me of when Hideo Nomo decided to chuck Pro baseball in Japan and sign with the LA Dodgers. All of the Japan coaches and sports writers said that Nomo would be eaten alive by the hitters in the MLB (like locals complainig that Milton was a wasted scholarship by UH because he was too small). When Nomo proved them wrong, the same people suddenly changed their tone and were praising and saying how proud they were of him.

    Rich comments I heard:
“You gotta understand that Hawaii people demand excellence! We’re not going to spend or bet our hard earned money on a 3-9 team in UH!! What? Who Rolo think we are? Stupid?”

  43. Buffoman December 3, 2017 8:57 am

Let’s see if I have the timing correct. Chow would have been coach recruiting McKenzie and Timoteo. So McKenzie decides against staying at home. Chow gets fired and Rolo gets hired. He recruits Dru and starts him mid-season.

What do we think would have been McKinzie’ s chances of ing and playing had he stayed? I think not. He made a good decision to leave.
