LB coach not returning to Warriors

Linebackers coach Sean Duggan will not be returning to the UH coaching staff, the Star-Advertiser has learned.

The Warriors are set to hire five coaches. Chris Naeole resigned as offensive line coach in October. Defensive coordinator Legi Suiaunoa and receivers coach Kefense Hynson accepted coaching jobs at Oregon State. The NCAA will allow FBS teams to hire a 10th assistant coach in January.

Duggan coached middle linebacker Jahlani Tavai, who led the Warriors in tackles the past two seasons after switching from rush end.

Duggan played linebacker at Boston College and was a graduate assistant in 2015 when the Eagles led the nation in defense.

    hi and bye!

me tinks Tavai made Duggan look good — could be wrong.

    Lots of work to do.
    More Warrior players.
    More Warrior coaches.
    More fan support.
    Lots of work to do.
    I’m in!

    beautiful, sunny day in Hawaii

maddog: how’s the “chill” in Chicago?

spoke with a lady in Minnesota yesterday and she said it warmed up to 1 degree from minus 2 degrees the day before — yikes!!!!!!!

  5. Stephen Tsai December 27, 2017 9:37 am

I didn’t have much dealings with him. But he seems like a nice guy. But, heck, I think almost every UH coach I’ve ever dealt with has been nice.

  6. Stephen Tsai December 27, 2017 9:42 am

Two coaches who didn’t like me were Roger Reid, because I wrote about him whining about calls, and Jason Rabedeaux, who was a really good and animated coach. Rabedeaux had a sad ending to his life:

    Bring back Kurt Gouviea.
Replacing him with a 1 year grad assistant was a BAD move

Any word on when new coaches will be hired? I’m sure some people want to know. And I’m not talking about the fans. Recruits must be scratching their heads.

  11. AllG December 27, 2017 10:08 am

Funny thing is when Rolo set up his initial staff he didn’t want to load it with all former UH guys and he wanted to diversify the staff a little. But the only guys to remain on his staff are all the former UH guys. Maybe he should just stick to hiring Alumni. They seem to turn into good coaches. Bring back Tuioti at DL or possibly DC, maybe promote Estes to OLine coach, Chad Brown at LB coach, Stutz can coach receivers, and bring in a quality OC. Unless Rolo plans to run the show, then maybe bring Chang back as QB coach. Leile coming back as WR coach is a option as well. Would love to have Klemm and Ulbrich on the staff but they are out of our league already. But maybe we need need to spend a little more to get better coaches, you get what you pay for. Rolo and Matlin can fund raise and look for big boosters to come up with the money.

  12. islandman December 27, 2017 10:11 am

Duggan will be careful not to chest bump with 6-7, 270 lb linemen.

  13. roygbivs December 27, 2017 10:19 am

    It’s business, notten personal.

Turnover is expected, if these coaches were to hang their hats here, long term, then I would imagine them investing in some kine of property …. anyhoo

  14. Maddog50 December 27, 2017 10:22 am

A-House regarding weather-I hate this, but heade to Florida for a week soon. I actually played golf here only a week ago in sunny low 50 temps! This stuff is no fun but at least sunny takes a little edge off. Looking for some staff replacements soon. It does sound odd that Dugan leaves and no real info on where he’s headed. I’m still convinced we will have some very good additions to staff. I sure hope we get some good ones and that the pay scale is bumped up to a competitive base

  15. H-Man December 27, 2017 10:26 am

    Good luck to Sean Duggan.

  16. Lowtone123 December 27, 2017 10:48 am

Josh Pacheco announced that Baraka Beckett has de-committed from Hawaii and has reopened his recruitment.

  17. ai-eee-soos December 27, 2017 11:04 am

#11. Agree. Bring back Timmy Chang.

WR coach: Stutz, & continue as passing game coord.

QB coach: Timmy Chang, & can help Stutz in any area.

btw. Timmy was making about 132-134k at UNR, about the same as our assistants.

Timmy can coach our two new QB’s, and mebbe put “some elements” of the RnS into our “offense”. Gotta do something
to get a chance to win some games, and get the fans excited again.

  18. turfwar December 27, 2017 11:21 am

Football Scoop speculating that a new DC coming to town with a possible change in scheme bringing his own guys.

  19. Lowtone123 December 27, 2017 12:25 pm

Word is that Coach Cav is still in the running for OL coach.

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid December 27, 2017 12:30 pm

Much work to do! Git ‘er done! Spring is not so far away!

  21. A-House December 27, 2017 12:33 pm

would love to see Coach Cav back along the sidelines during games — he must run over 6 miles each game

he would certainly bring a big credibility bag with him

  22. burro sabio December 27, 2017 12:33 pm

    Please, not Timmy. He’s lacking.

  23. A-House December 27, 2017 12:38 pm

to help all UH coaches with the “housing problem”

UH buys single family unit, condos, townhouses, etc for all coaching staff and charge a minimum rent of $200 – $800/month with the high end for a house for all the head coaches

for any “local” coach who already has a house or condo, include an extra $1,000 -$1,200/month to salary

surely, something can be worked out to help incoming coaches — it;s all negotiable.

  24. A-House December 27, 2017 12:41 pm

    DPK:

i was told the middle of winter, at least on the mainland, is February of each year.

our “turning of the seasons” comes with trees with new leaves and flowering mango trees — easy way the spot them in the mountains.

  25. A-House December 27, 2017 12:42 pm

how good was Tony Tuioti as a DL coach?

  26. A-House December 27, 2017 12:43 pm

where does recruiting ability appear on a coaches list of “good things”?

    #1 or #2 or #3???

  27. ai-eee-soos December 27, 2017 12:48 pm

    #22.

That means he should be a “perfect fit”.

  28. Old School Dave December 27, 2017 1:52 pm

    Mahalo, Coach Duggan!!

Heard that it might be George Lumpkin bringing along Kanani Souza.

  29. ai-eee-soos December 27, 2017 2:02 pm

    lol

    … and Miano too.

    lol

  30. BigWave96744 December 27, 2017 2:13 pm

Tavai’s success has nothing to do with Duggan. Jahlani is just a beast that will play on Sundays

  31. Old School Dave December 27, 2017 2:18 pm

No forget Rick Blangiardi – who was a DC under Larry Price.

  32. Lowtone123 December 27, 2017 2:31 pm

    Is Dennis McKnight busy?

  33. turfwar December 27, 2017 2:31 pm

Or my favorite Defensive Coordinator Doug Kay.

  34. ai-eee-soos December 27, 2017 2:46 pm

    # 32.

He might be with JJ, up north.

In any event, he is a house husband, up north.

  35. Bryson December 27, 2017 3:23 pm

I heard they bringing back McMackin since he had a hand in 3 WaC Championships and a Sugar Bowl appearence…or his protege might be coming back to the islands

  36. burro sabio December 27, 2017 3:38 pm

    ai-eee-soos, LOL!

  37. burro sabio December 27, 2017 3:45 pm

So who does Rolo trust as a DC to also bring in 1 or 2 other assistants, sight unseen.

  38. al December 27, 2017 4:40 pm

    Speculation you all are speculating.

The truth of the matter, “nobody” gets hired until the purse string are loosened.
It’s a shame that the power brokers won’t allow us to spend more.
    For shame.

  39. islandman December 27, 2017 4:56 pm

Corey Batoon’s name came up on another board. Was mentioned on a Sporty Nelson tweet.

  40. kapakahi December 27, 2017 5:13 pm

Hopefully Beckett will re-consider UH……since still need some more OL signees…..
    https://twitter.com/BarakaFootball/status/946048453666361344

  41. Maddog50 December 27, 2017 5:16 pm

Batoon is listed as co-defensive coordinator at FAU. The pay does not appear to be sky high as last years DC was paid 150k. Chris Kiffin is co D.C. At 300K. The guys a west coaster who lists birthplace as Honolulu. Interesting info, maybe smoke maybe fire!

  42. winning December 27, 2017 5:18 pm

Remember, McMackin was DC for Miami Fla. under Dennis Erickson and won a National Championship. He has plenty of experience. If Mike riley went back to OSU as an assistant then I’m sure McMac might consider UH since the old LoLo regime is gone. Heh Heh!!

  43. winning December 27, 2017 5:21 pm

Plus McMac is not really hurting for money.

  44. islandman December 27, 2017 5:23 pm

    Went to St Louis

  45. MattyBoy December 27, 2017 5:26 pm

Funny how the TPTB at UH do understand what the football program can do for the school. I almost want to go as far as saying they’re a bit inept/incompetent etc.. just really sucks. They’re basically setting up Rolo to fail. Auwe.

  46. Luki December 27, 2017 5:33 pm

Aloha coach Duggan! Along with Tavai felt like Matautia got better as the season went along. A guy with local ties is not necessarily a better fit “cough” Norm Chow. An up and comer or been there done that oldtimer willing to grind for low pay. Working with less than modest facilities. Has the ability to recruit, teach, and motivate his players

  47. Casual Observer December 27, 2017 6:55 pm

What about Rich Miano as DC?

  48. al December 27, 2017 7:12 pm

    40. Reading the subliminal message.
He probably was removed from the board.
    Read between the lines.

  49. al December 27, 2017 7:14 pm

    No M & M’s please.

  50. al December 27, 2017 7:21 pm

    23. That’s nearly 7 X the annual assistant coaches salary budget.

  51. al December 27, 2017 7:37 pm

    14. Your 5th sentence, it’s self explanatory. Looking for the subliminal will reveal the answer to your query.

  52. H-Man December 27, 2017 7:41 pm

Not returning or contract not renewed?

  53. al December 27, 2017 8:32 pm

    All of the above?
