It’s BYU week

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s been a rough year for the Warriors.

But there could be a sweet parting if the Warriors can prevail against BYU this coming Saturday.

Yes, kids, ask your parents and grandparents what the UH-BYU rivalry meant.

The rivalry is spread throughout the athletic program. Here are memorable images: BYU’s Peter Kendrick winning both games of a doubleheader … UH’s Joe Frazier holding and holding the ball in an era before the shot clock … UH players imitating the Heisman pose on the night Ty Detmer was named the 1990 winner … Tes Whitlock’s ESPY-nominated game-winner … and, of course, David Hallums famously uttering that a victory over BYU “was better than statehood.”

This series hasn’t been much of a rivalry for a while. But, hey, it’s still BYU week.

Rough year is an understatement. More like horrible year. Okay, tme to look beyond, but not past BYU. Warriors have a chance if they can mentally prepare for the last game. I pick Warriors over the Cougars, 28-20.

UH fans are the only ones that still think it’s some sort of rivalry. It died off.

BYU has a Kafentzis and Niumatalolo on its roster. Also Vili “The Warrior” son, Sam, is on the coaching staff.

At least 40 Polynesian on the BYU roster

    BYU also does the Haka

Hawaii LDS residents with no ties to UH will show up to cheer for the Mothership

    Since 1989 Hawaii is 4-10 vs BYU with wins 1989, 90, 92, 01

SINCE 2001 Hawaii is 0-4 vs BYU

As a coach Rolo is 1-2 vs BYU
    2011 Hawaii OC – Lost
    2013 Nevada OC – Lost
    2014 Nevada OC – Won
    2017 Hawaii HC – ??

  6. Derek November 20, 2017 5:57 am

Trust your eyes how teams are playing now. UH lost at UNLV. BYU beat UNLV in Vegas. UH beat UMass. UMass beat BYU last week. UH can’t beat UMass now. BYU starting QB out for the season. So what? BYU knows they can beat Hawaii. Hawaii not sure they can beat BYU. History. Line has BYU -3. Easy. BYU 27, Hawaii 10. Continue recruiting.

  7. KOH I NOR November 20, 2017 6:18 am

Prior to the year when spring training started, A questions was asked. How do you think the Warriors will do this year in the fall season? My pick was 8-4 record. Opposite. If Hawai’i wins.

  8. Buffoman November 20, 2017 6:20 am

As an oldtime fan (since the “termite palace across from Wigwam, next to Bucks Bakery), the most memorable win over BYU, was led by Garrett Gabriel to me. After years of loses, some frustratingly close, that one was so satisfying.

On another note, Charles Manson was not heard of by myself. Cult leader. BEFORE my time.

  10. Old School Dave November 20, 2017 6:46 am

Agree, that there will be more local LDS members in the stands at Aloha Stadium out to support the “Mother Ship.”

    Interesting game summary:

    https://www.mwcconnection.com/2017/11/19/16677698/brigham-young-cougars-vs-hawaii-rainbow-warriors-preview

Coach Rolovich will need to evaluate all aspects of the program after this week’s game: Coaches, player personnel, schemes, organization, strength & conditioning program, team nutrition, travel plans, etc. Need to find out which players are on board with the program and who has checked out (give their releases). Open up all positions in the spring. Confident that Coach will “right the ship.”

Tumultuous 2nd year under Rolo, but I remember the disarray after June Jones’ 2nd year (3-9, including a loss to Portland State), compounded by his near death when his car ran into a concrete pillar in the Spring of 2002.

depressing year for UH football even tho the other sports programs are doing well — especially men and women volleyball and men’s basketball

12/20/2017 will tell the tale for 2018 and beyond

    will be there for BYU!

  14. Coach DB November 20, 2017 8:33 am

I’ve been watching and not saying much because of medical problems, so here are my observations:

UH The School Admin has not FULLY committed to making football a PRIORITY!!!

YOU MUST BE WILLING TO FINANCE THE EXPECTATION!!!

The Players put in the SWEAT and the Adults put in the DOLLARS, plain and simple as that!

I had a great conversation with an insider who was there during the”June Jones Era” he said after the Sugar Bowl vs Georgia Coach Jones wanted to plow the Money from the game back into the football program ie. Better facilities, making the football operations more attractive to get better players for the future. But the school and the state had other ideas for that money so now YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW! Want great football? Be willing to finance the expectation!!! Add $1 to the hotel room tax PUT THOSE BEACHES TO WORK!!!!

  15. islandman November 20, 2017 8:39 am

Bobby says Sitake is gone after this game . True ?
He had a good year last season, 9-4 and a Bowl win.

  16. islandman November 20, 2017 8:47 am

    13. Add a tax, but we have a tax for the rail already. Taxpayers have to fund more affordable housing and services for the people. We have to have more donors, corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, etc.
But those often come after winning seasons.

  17. Old School Dave November 20, 2017 8:51 am

Comment from an impartial observer after UH’s Sugar Bowl loss:

“Boy, then Hawaiian Boys sure can dance with pride and emotion. I was impressed. Too bad it didn’t transfer onto the field against Georgia.”

Cooke Field had black turf in the Lower Campus back then. How quaint. Did the Sugar Bowl money ($4 million) go to putting in new turf there?

Think that the need for improved facilities, salaries, resources for UH Football has fallen on deaf eyes in this State (Politicians, UH BOR members, UH Administrators, the local public). Heard the radio crew praise the $30 million in facility improvements at USU from the last time UH played there in 2013. Football means something to the folks at other MWC schools. Local people don’t see the relationship between putting money into the facilities and resources and success (“Look at Kahuku. They no more nice facilities, but they still win!!). Gotta feel bad (at least I do) for the UH coaches and players.

And I still get calls at dinner time from UH asking me to give more money

Of course, the State of Hawaii has other priorities such as allocating some $20 million to the Mental Hospital over the last 10 years (including $1.7 mil for security last year).

Randall Saito: Coming to a Half-Way House in your neighborhood!

Suggestion for BYU game this weekend:
    1) Start McDonald at QB (need a shake up/nothing to lose, everything to gain).
    2) More inside routes (slants/drags/digs) & rubs (when man/blitz cover). (The 4-6 yd out patterns when you’re 3rd & long is nuts.)
    3) Get out of the 3 front on D. Gap control is horrendous. Pass rush is non-existent.

  21. Inyoface November 20, 2017 10:37 am

I still don’t understand the no time out call at the end of the first half. Time out’s are like gold coins!

  22. H-Man November 20, 2017 10:44 am

I too would like to see McDonald start, but he won’t. Rolo is firm that Dru gives the Warriors best chance to win. But I like McDonald because of his running. With the O-line all “buss-up,” I feel we need a mobile/running QB for this game. But if BYU strikes early and Warriors have to play catch-up, then Dru is the man.

  23. Ipu Man November 20, 2017 11:18 am

“Brother, can you spare a dime?”
How about a measly ten cent tax per tourist.

    #13:

interesting comment you make on June Jones wanting to put the $4 million into infrastructure updates — heard this also — because one UH coach stated after the game that Jones mentioned leaving for SMU and taking all those who wanted to move in the “coaches meeting” before the game and same coach said somehow this information leaked to the players BEFORE the game — sitting in the stands, we could not figure out why the UH players came unto the field so “down”

but, I agree that upgrading certain facilities would have been $$$ well spent!

Old School Dave — your #16:

phone calls during dinner — we stopped donating to UH for 3 years after someone called asking for $$$

a friend who donates big $$$ to UH sports stopped donating cause she told UH not to call her — she told them that she will make a donation to whom and when she felt it was appropriate — she had 4 or 5 favorite sports and her total donations were into the 5 figures — she wanted no publicity — these are hard to find, but they are out there — just need to find the right avenue to reach that person(s)

  31. A-House November 20, 2017 12:32 pm

i suppose this is crazy, but has UH developed a criteria on what impresses a recruit the most?

besides getting a free t rip to Hawaii, why are you interested in attending/playing for UH? an unsigned questionnaire may be useful to develop the list. is the amount of the additional “stipend” a significant factor? facilities? life style?

a list which can be used to “approach” upper campus for funds to upgrade facilities if this a high priority for recruits

  32. KOH I NOR November 20, 2017 12:33 pm

McDonald never paid his money fee. Just the game. Unsure if they’ll let him play or he’ll go in to the game.

BYU was independent or is independent. Not sure about them too.

Rivalry: maybe. But as of late, all BYU. 1989, 1990 was a freak year. Garrett Gabriel had a good receiver. Derrick Branch. They were all WAC. No all MWC on this team.

McKenzie Milton is playing the same way he did at Mililani and now at Central Florida. Lots of explosive and chunk plays. Boom, boom, boom, boom touchdown. It doesn’t take long to be in the end zone. I’m not surprised at all UCF is leading the nation in scoring. Their gain, our loss. It is a delight watching him play and we can see him this week against South Forida, another good team. Should be fun. By comparison, watching UH is so boring and even can’t compare to the excitement of the 3 high school championship games. Where have U goneColt Brennan! I’m waiting for Chevan Cordeiro already, and maybe Jeremy Moussa can be that type of dual QB too. Somebody who can lead our team to the promised land. Anybody. We are still chasing championships!!!!!!

  39. Old School Dave November 20, 2017 2:28 pm

A-House: I know where you’re coming from. I’m only a Manini fan who gives $$ when I can in order to help out the program, but this last time they called (at dinner time), I told them TO NOT call me anymore and that I would donate what I could, when the time was right. Really left a bad taste in my mouth when previously I was just trying to “help out” a little.

UH needs to be get out into the community and focus on developing relationships with potential corporate sponsors and wealthy private citizens (nevah mind manini guys like me). I think that there is a real disconnect in how UH Athletics attempts to increase donors. Best of luck hoping for help from the State (like drilling for oil on Kahoolawe). Look at Lahainaluna HS and their new stadium and field that came from a generous donation from the late Sue Cooley. Ms. Cooley, who was a part-time resident, was moved by what she saw in the team and wanted to help the program and community. Their stadium is now appropriately named after her.

They don’t call anymore but I still get letters. Coach Beeman sent a nice handwritten letter of thanks which I thought was really nice of her.

UH is 11th on scoring in MW games, at only 18.9 points per game and 8th scoring defense, 33.5 pts allowed per game.
Wyoming is 9th in scoring 23.3 but 2nd in scoring defense, 15.9 pts.
Our offense need a major overhaul, with either the players including the QB or the scheme or both. Not even 3 TD’s per MW game average.

What happen to our highly touted d-line from the past? That was our stronghold during the hay days and seems like it hasn’t been around for years and years. We really need to recruit a stout defensive line over anything else.

  45. Inyoface November 20, 2017 7:41 pm

Didn’t mean to be mean just saying we need a solid 2 deep defensive line to run a constant 4-3 defense.

  46. H-Man November 20, 2017 7:46 pm

A short bit on the Rainbow Warrior football program. Football began as a club sport in 1909 as the “Fighting Deans,” two years after the College of Hawai‘i was founded. The College of Hawai‘i became the University of Hawai‘i in 1920. The University of Hawai‘i
became a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association
    (NCAA) in 1946.

    That’s 108 years of football.

I would like to see the program continue for another 108 years, but it’s going to take a commitment from the governor, legislature and the community to see that it does.

My generation saw the rise of Rainbow football beginning around 1966. The Rainbows. Some today don’t like the name. That’s okay when you think the program started as the “Fighting Deans.” So it’s the Warriors.

Great wins; heartbreaking losses. But it was exciting starting with Dave Holmes and continued by Dick Tomey, Bob Wagner and June Jones.

I am counting on Nick Rolovich to carry on the tradition.

    Go Warriors !!!

    Beat BYU !!!

  47. Derek November 20, 2017 7:50 pm

Last year our defense was pretty porous too, but the difference is that UH was able to beat the teams we were supposed to beat (San Jose, Nevada, Fresno St., and one super effort at Air Force). We lost soundly by Boise State at home and on the road at San Diego State, and lost at home to UNLV which was heartbreak city. We also lost to New Mexico at home. Further, the UH offense was able to consistently score points because of key players like Marcus Kemp and Steven Lakalaka. The other thing is Rigo Sanchez was so consistent that he probably was a major contributor to winning at least 3 games by himself with his kicking and punting. If BYU wins this Saturday they will be 3-9 and UH will also be 3-9. That would be so appropo. Two teams who have seen better days. BYU is longing for Bronco Mendenhall and Hawaii is longing for June Jones.

  48. winning November 20, 2017 8:11 pm

what was the scuffle all about or no comment from coaches?

  49. aaron November 20, 2017 8:38 pm

the version of events I heard is like what A-House said: JJ accepted the SMU job before the Sugar Bowl, so not sure how he had plans for how to spend the money after the game if he wasn’t going to be around to see it through. If anything, he had so much leverage after it leaked that he was leaving that he could have made all kinds of demands (including firing Herman Frazier) but he didn’t do that because it isn’t “his style”. History has treated him kindly in this regard…

  50. aaron November 20, 2017 8:39 pm

As for donating… This year, instead of donating I just bought an extra season ticket for football and an extra season ticket for basketball.

  51. Old Diver November 20, 2017 8:49 pm

#30 Rolo commented this past February he was surprised the biggest concern from the families of local recruits is their perception that UH is a second rate university academically. An unprepared Rolovich found out too late you will not win them over talking facilities or pride rock. Talking up a academics at UH is a year around endeavor which must come from the UH President, AD and Head Coach. U.S News and World Report has UH ranked in the top 5% of four year institutions in the country. Talking up academics at UH should be easy.

  52. islandman November 20, 2017 8:50 pm

    46. BYU is already 3-9. Yes, UH is currently 3-8.
Last season we averaged 28.3 pts per game overall and allowed 37.3 pts per game.
This season we average 23 pts and are allowing 34.3.
Last season we scored 34 or more points in 7 games.
This season we scored 34 (38) or more points 3 times, so far.

  53. Old School Dave November 20, 2017 9:06 pm

So people want to fire Rolo because of this years losing record. That’ll come out to a payout of $800,000 for the remainder of his contract. If there’s money remaining, the next coach would be offered around $200,000 and the assistants 50,000. The thought of a Football display in the SSC in memory of UH Football is becoming more of a reality, it seems.

I think about this coach who delivers season tickets in person, sometimes bringing cheerleaders. A coach who goes to Costco to meet and greet, and whose players end up helping to load groceries in customer’s vehicles. A coach who had extremely innovative ways to award scholarships to walk-ons. In short, someone who thinks outside of the proverbial box to publicize his team. This coach is a keeper, he and his staff just need to recruit, recruit, recruit.

  55. Coach DB November 20, 2017 10:33 pm

Wow Nothing is wrong with your Head Coach!

  57. cappie the dog November 21, 2017 5:35 am

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to run the triple-option.

  58. Old School Dave November 21, 2017 6:31 am

Well said, Coach DB!! Watched the USU game and it was simple to see that the Aggies were bigger, faster, stronger, and more athletic than UH. Plain and simple. You could run any fancy, swanky offensive scheme and the result would have been the same on Saturday. UH just doesn’t have the talent level at this time. Gotta get out and recruit! Like the old coach said:

    “Physical Superiority Cancels All Theory”

  59. Ipu Man November 21, 2017 7:09 am

    Goliath was pretty “superior”.
David (Chad Owens) had no fear.
    And triumphed.

  60. A-House November 21, 2017 7:42 am

local players/parents who believe UH is a “second rate academically”

personally, I would take that as a grain of salt because it’s not what the school offers as much as what you, as the student, puts into your academic effort and WHAT YOU DO AFTER YOU GRADUATE!

    that’s what makes the difference!!!

  61. burro sabio November 21, 2017 8:07 am

State Government doesn’t have a commitment to education, both to DOE and UH. Definitely no commitment to athletics.

Going back to the Utah St game; did our team take the red-eye to Utah? Did I read that they landed in Utah at 7:30am on a Thursday; had a few hours of sleep; and then had a practice? What time did they leave Hawaii on Wed; and what were their flight connections; or did they have a non-stop charter flight?

I strongly believe that over-night flights SHOULD NEVER be taken; as it wrecks havoc on the body and mind!

  64. Temp Manoa November 21, 2017 10:21 am

I think Rolo can be a good head coach, but good head coaches have good staffs— a good defensive coordinator and a good offensive coordinator are essential. But to make sure that the players do what the HC and coordinators envision, you need good position coaches who understand the offense and defense and how their positions fit— QB, RB’s, TE, SB, WR, OL, DE, DT, LB, S, DB—and— this is important—coaches get better at these things with experience and by working with experienced coaches. Rolo’s fate was cast when he did not have a budget to hire the experience he needed— this was compounded when he lost an OC with some experience immediately and an experienced DC after one season— but he was stuck when they left. I believe rebuilding the staff is critical— as much as we can.
