Game day: UMass

HADLEY, Mass. β€” Today’s most interesting sporting event that doesn’t involved a UFC fighter or “Money” is set to kick off the Warriors’ 2017 season.

There are key returnees for UH on both sides of the ball β€” notably QB Dru Brown, RB Diocemy Saint Juste, LT Dejon Allen, TE Metuisela ‘Unga, MLB Jahlani Tavai, and FS Trayvon Henderson. But after a purposeful offseason and preseason, there is a different feel to these Warriors. Not only is there maturity to the players, but it also appears the coaching staff has grown. The Warriors lost last year’s DC, Kevin Lempa, but retained his protege, LB coach Sean Duggan. Promoting Legi Suiaunoa to DC was a seamless transition.

Maybe all of that translates into improvement for this game, maybe not. UMass also appears to have made strong gains in the nine months since both teams closed the 2016 regular season with UH’s 46-40 victory.

But it should make for an intriguing opener.

The oddsmakers favor UMass, but I’m thinking UH wins this one.

I know Hawaii vs UMass football will be a lot more exciting than that other event of “Money vs Notorious.”

I will be watching the game at home at 12 noon. It’s less than 6 hours away. Game day is here!!!!

  28. WarriorNY August 26, 2017 12:29 pm

Thank god we can watch the games this year!

keliandkawika #3 thank you for the UMass tv link.
But it is about three plays behind Bobby Curran
so am listening to both broadcasts on each ear.

  31. Mytake August 26, 2017 12:55 pm

Aside from the 1 sack, the O line looks good in pass protection.

  32. H-Man August 26, 2017 1:03 pm

Arrgghhh. Penalties, penalties. penalties. Fred threw a punch. I will be disappointed if the coaches don’t make a change.

  33. Willie August 26, 2017 1:14 pm

I would have expected better from a Rolo coached team. Undisciplined, selfish play from the O-line! Are they trying to set a pace to lead the country in penalty yards? Come on Naole, get control of your players please!

  34. Inyoface August 26, 2017 1:15 pm

What’s up with the Oline scrapping so much?

  35. H-Man August 26, 2017 1:18 pm

Okay, Matt Norman replace Fred. And then Chris Posa gets ejected for throwing a punch!!!! Where is the discipline that Rolo always talks about?

  36. Willie August 26, 2017 1:21 pm

Tell O-Line that the Mayweather vs McGregor fight is later today. Maybe if they blocked better instead of fighting they could have picked up 1 yard to keep the drive going.

  37. mo808 August 26, 2017 1:35 pm

Too many penalties and turn overs UH –but….Ursua 85 yards!! The glass is only half full I guess..woohoo!!

  38. Palolo August 26, 2017 1:41 pm

Poor Hawaii not playing well against a not very good UMass team. Poor sportsmanship is hurting us like last year. We will beat UMass but it will be tough against UCLA, BYU and the Mountain West teams.

  39. Willie August 26, 2017 1:45 pm

Well, UH wins 1st half in penalties 8 to 3 for UMass. Most disturbing is that key penalties killed UH drives and last one extended UMas for the last second score. Thought we were beyond the poor discipline days of Mac and Chow!

  40. kawika49 August 26, 2017 1:56 pm

Coach; please calm these players down.

  41. Mytake August 26, 2017 1:57 pm

This team is hard to watch but, it nothing compared to the Mayweather fight. Can u say Ali vs Giant Baba?

  42. Stephen Tsai August 26, 2017 1:58 pm

Well, that was an ugly first half.
Too many penalties. Too many mistakes.

  43. Whats up August 26, 2017 1:59 pm

Hello from San Antonio, Tx. Weather here is a little wet and windy today. I expected Hawaii to have some first game jitters but this is ridiculous. This team needs discipline, those penalties are insanely bad. Rolo needs to clean this mess up or UMass is going to upset Hawaii.

  44. kawika49 August 26, 2017 2:04 pm

    #43
    Or Hawaii will upset Hawaii.

  45. mo808 August 26, 2017 2:05 pm

Praying for the team to come up with a better showing in the 2nd half! Rolo, I hope you had a chance to slap the heads of some buggahs who nevah show class and the back of the braddahs that were honorable! Go Warriors!! Get chance we still 0 -0 😊

  46. azwarrior22 August 26, 2017 2:32 pm

Offense needs to step up and defense needs to buckle down.

  47. Willie August 26, 2017 2:35 pm

At least for the 1st quarter, Colt’s uncle is doing well with SJSU @ home leading heavily favored & 19th ranked USF. Spartans look good so far on both the D & O line. Might be a long season for the Warriors in conference.

    That is excellent.
And the defense held UMass to 7 points in that quarter.
Good job, Warriors. Proud of you.

  63. SteveM August 26, 2017 3:55 pm

Whew… my guess didn’t bachi the game if the first half don’t count.
But I had fate–after all, this is probably the first time ST ever openly predicted a UH in his blog. I don’t recall him ever calling one. ST is usually always accurate.

Nice final TO called by the UH coaching staff. The Eleven/UMass TV announcers complemented the call.

  68. Old School Dave August 26, 2017 4:10 pm

Congrats Warriors!! Hard fought win on the other side of the continent. Enjoy the flight back home! Alway better when you win.

U Mass TE will likely be playing on Sundays.

Got a feeling that Coaches Rolo & Naeole are not happy with some things (penalties) and that some players will be rolling on the turf come next week.

  69. Whats up August 26, 2017 4:16 pm

Glad Hawaii got that Ugly win, Rolo and his staff will have 5000 mile flight back home to correct the Ugliness the boys displayed in this game. But playing ugly like that against UCLA and MWC teams will cause Hawaii a lot more Losses than Wins.

  70. Willie August 26, 2017 4:19 pm

Dunno what the coaches said at half time, but props to them with 2nd half penalties virtually non-existent! Those two replacement O-Line guys did great! Don’t see the two doghouse “P” boy fighters returning anytime soon. Dedication to team, discipline and just hard nosed football of those two that stepped up trumps physical talent anytime!

Lastly #5 is a Beast and #7 has Sunday type talent!

  71. al August 26, 2017 4:42 pm

First game. A lot of rust and new personnel to go along with new schemes.
    We shouldn’t expect anything less.
Any win is never ugly, it’s a win.

The heart of the team is there.
    Looking forward to each game.

  74. Derek August 26, 2017 6:26 pm

Without a doubt, John Ursua was just electrifying. Many times he was so open that you had to wonder where the defensive back was. What a player!

  75. WarriorNY August 26, 2017 9:58 pm

Neil Everett on top ten plays talking Hawaii! Game winning play was number 10…

I bet Neil reads this blog as well…

  76. H-Man August 26, 2017 11:07 pm

It can be said the same for UMass’ TE #81 Breneman who caught 9 passes for 179 yds. Seems he was running free in an open meadow often and made you wonder where the DBs were. He will play on Sundays.

  77. z August 27, 2017 12:20 am

Their head coach said that Ursua looked like Jerry Rice.

  78. z August 27, 2017 12:25 am

  79. Chicken Grease August 27, 2017 12:33 am

  81. Chicken Grease August 27, 2017 2:34 am

Who cares what UMass players will “play on Sundays”? The heck you guys concerned about them already? By the time they play in the NFL (or not), you’re only going to be concerned with whether they play for your team or not. Or just become another Caperkneel (were you concerned whether he played on Sundays or not back then? Now look at him).

Be darn year 3070 by the time UH play the Minutemen again anyway.

    Support your UH Warrior players!!!!!!!!

  82. WarriorNY August 27, 2017 3:32 am

  84. Boolakanaka August 27, 2017 8:19 am

Ursua was representing Halawa (by proxy) big-time yesterday. He could have easily gone north of 300 if not for a couple of penalties. Cheeeehoooo Larrio (his pops) !!!!!!

  85. UH4eva August 27, 2017 10:29 am

#75 of course I read this blog. No better place to get Warrior news!

  86. clyde August 27, 2017 10:34 am

When Ursua signed his LOI a few years ago, I checked his videos and thought, “Wow, his future might be in basketball not football.” Now, I think he’s on the right path. Such a fluid athlete; awesome performance.

FYI: For those who care, Michelle Wie withdrew from a tournament in Canada to undergo emergency appendectomy.

  87. oneseason August 27, 2017 10:45 am

  91. Palolo2_LA August 27, 2017 12:25 pm

I attended the game in Amherst last night with kids and wife…few things standout to me. 1) it was an exciting game that could have gone very differently, but the Warriors persevered 2) tons of penalties, especially against Sr or upperclassmen as usual which needs to change 3) Ursua is a stud…reminds me of a C Owens without top end speed 4) the DL was not able to apply pressure and outside contain needs to be fixed 5) UMASS’ TE was wide open too often 6) there’s a bunch of high character players – many were thanking fans and jovial to my kids and otger fans who were excited to shake hands with them 7) starting with a win puts wimd in the players sails 8) the FR LB from Samoa made plays on special teams by blowimg ppl up and will be a stud

  92. Palolo2_LA August 27, 2017 12:38 pm

    9) Tvai is a monster in the middle, Muataitia hits like a hammer and Moala pushes 300 lb linemem around effortlessly. Can’t wait to see them develop

And Chicken Grease, it’s not a right that we get interviews with the coach or player, their first priority is the team and the game.

Ehhhh?!?! Are you wit’ da press?

It looks especially ingrateful when the Wahine took time to get lei from “the aunties.” They or Coach Ah Mow (indeed, WHILE the Wahine were getting their lei) could’ve given Ms. Luis a quote or two in 3-5 mins.

    Thank you.

Looks like Marcus Kemp is making a good impression in KC camp:

“Kemp, a rookie UDFA, had a few nice plays Friday night
The biggest hit for the Kansas City Chiefs Friday night against the Seattle Seahawks came on the kickoff coverage unit, and it was delivered from a guy who isn’t even used to playing special teams. “

It would be really cool if you named yourself after the Akira Kurosawa film.

I am waiting for Criterion to release it on Blu-Ray. The DVD has been out of print for some time.

I didn’t realize Kemp was doing well. I just look at the receiving stats.

  97. Kahuna August 27, 2017 3:00 pm

Winning a game on the road is not easy….no matter who the opponent is. We in different elements and unfamiliar territory. Most team win ugly on the road so this win, to me, is a good win. No complaints from me.

Of course, there are mistakes that need to be addressed but to win despite all the mistakes is encouraging.
