Game Day: UH vs. Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. >> Cole McDonald’s fourth-down pass into the end zone was broken up by linebacker Cole Christiansen, ending the Warriors’ comeback hopes in a 28-21 loss to Army today.

McDonald and John Ursua teamed on an 80-yard TD pass to close the Warriors to 28-21, then made a a fourth-down stop to set up the final sequence. UH advanced to the Army 11, but could not get the tying touchdown.

Hawaii makes a fourth-down stop. Gets ball back at its 27 with 3 minutes left and trailing 28-21.

* * * * *

And just like that, the Warriors close to 28-21 on Cole McDonald’s 80-yard, catch-and-sprint play to John Ursua.

* * * * *

Fullback Darnell Woolfolk goes 3 yards on a dive for a touchdown to extend Army’s lead to 28-14 with 9:01 to play.

The Black Knights have held possession for 17 minutes in the second half.

* * * * *

It was a scoreless third quarter, but the Black Knights held possession for 11:01 to maintain a 21-14 lead.

* * * * *

Jahlani Tavai blocks Army’s 27-yard field-goal attempt with 6 seconds left in the first, maintaining UH’s deficit at 21-14 entering the intermission.

* * * * *

Connor Slomka, one of Army’s five listed fullbacks, barrels his way through the Warriors’ initial level of defense en route to a 48-yard TD. Army now leads, 21-14, with 3:46 to play in the first half.

* * * * *

John Ursua might have made a case to be the backup QB.

On second-and-goal from the 1, Ursua went in motion, stopped behind center Taaga Tuulima, took the direct snap, and powered his way across the goal line to tie it at 14 with 7:05 left in the first half.

* * * * *

Kelvin Hopkins scores on another 1-yard keeper, this time with 12:46 left in the first half, to give the Black Knights a 14-7 lead. The drive consumed 7 minutes, 28 seconds and involved some controversy. Hopkins appeared to score on a 29-yard run, but it was ruled his knee touched the ground at the 14. Five plays later Hopkins scored.

* * * * *

The Warriors needed only 1 minute, 52 seconds to take a 7-0 lead.

Cole McDonald threw 12 yards to John Ursua on an out route as the Warriors scored on their opening drive for the fourth game in a row.

Ryan Meskell’s PAT kick made it 7-0 with 13:08 left in the first quarter.

* * * * *

It’s football on the Hudson today.

The Rainbow Warriors are seeking their four victory in as many weeks. They have won all three games in this series against Army (1-1).

We’ll have updates throughout the game.

50 yard plays are a sight for sore eyes … TDs after less than 2 minutes are great too. Hawaii leads 7-0 with 13:08 left in the 1st.

  18. Jimmy Martinez September 15, 2018 6:20 am

Hawaii plays no ranked teams this season. They cannot have any blemishes.

  19. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:21 am

McD sacked. That’s aOK. THAT’s O.K. GREAT WE GOING ON 4th this season!

  20. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:24 am

Batoon’s defense Warriors are doing the job. About 7 mins left in the first Q!

  21. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:27 am

Uh. Might have to take that back. 5 yard line Army. Almost a TD.

    Ah.

    Hawaii 7
    Army 7

  22. clyde September 15, 2018 6:29 am

Costly dropped pass turned momentum back to Army. Gotta respond.

  23. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 6:30 am

Tough…dropped passes kills R&S drives…7-7…reload offense let’s go get it back

  24. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:32 am

That Army TD was absolutely inexcusable!!!! Takk to your men, Batoon.

McD beginning to show symptoms of Soace Jam virus?

  25. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:33 am

    WHERE’S the darn WB protection?!?

  26. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:34 am

    QB protrction, rather.

  27. Jdawg September 15, 2018 6:35 am

    Where is Jojo Ward?

  28. Buffoman September 15, 2018 6:37 am

Loss of concentration may be that sign of over confidence. Have to play hungry. Army can win this one.

  29. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:41 am

    Oh man. Come on Defense.

Black Knights got the run and shoot going on, instead 🙄

  30. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:42 am

Sigh. Our first trail of the season.

  31. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 6:44 am

The chop blocking is so effective on the wide plays. Defense has to adjust.

  32. Boolakanaka September 15, 2018 6:44 am

Adjustments, discipline with the pitchman and sure tackling are going to be the keys for us to win…

  33. Idunnonuttin September 15, 2018 6:48 am

I think Bobby Curran & Jon Veneri sounds great. Any Steaks?

    52-23 prediction Hawai’i win.

  34. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 6:50 am

Start of the quarter where UH looked dominating turned around quickly…Army adjustments on D looks genius…UH needs to counter adjust on offense. Haven’t seen the RPO pass play to slots yet.

  35. Chicken Grease September 15, 2018 6:50 am

What was Rolo’s deal with the military? We beat Navy, we lose to Army?

    🤔

  36. Savich September 15, 2018 6:51 am

Can I join in? Steaks. Potatoe chips. Soda

  37. Idunnonuttin September 15, 2018 6:52 am

    Go Warriors!

  38. Idunnonuttin September 15, 2018 6:54 am

I am glad I took off from my Zippy’s job. Part time though. Dishwasher. But I’m off today again.

    Go Warriors!

  39. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 6:55 am

Game firmly now running at Army’s pace…need the offense to get back on track or this wear on the D could cause this game to get out of hand…

  40. clyde September 15, 2018 6:57 am

14-play, 7 1/2-minute scoring drive. Classic Army football. Let’s see how Warriors respond to adversity, trailing for the first time this season.

  41. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 7:00 am

    Nice…offensive adjustments looks awesome…runs opening up passing…nice

  42. Idunnonuttin September 15, 2018 7:00 am

Just like Army. I think they don’t need any cops. They are cops.

    Beat Army!

  43. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 7:04 am

    Well done offense 14-14!

  44. Boolakanaka September 15, 2018 7:05 am

Really nice deliberate, composed and methodical drive…..solid.

  45. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 7:05 am

D time! A stop on this next drive could turn this game around….

  46. oneseason September 15, 2018 7:07 am

Very good to see Hawaii respond to their first time trailing with a creative drive and 7 points.

  47. clyde September 15, 2018 7:07 am

Fool me once, shame on me … in the shotgun at the 1/2-yard line? Haha. Nothing like the old slotback sneak! Nice response.

  48. Ipu Man September 15, 2018 7:13 am

    Bobby Curran keeps saying “Navy”…
    Wake up Bobby.
    🙂

  49. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 7:13 am

Well we all knew this was going to be a battle…this Army offense really exposes missed assignments and missed tackles…game on…let’s go Warriors IMUA!

  50. Boolakanaka September 15, 2018 7:18 am

BCs problem is he obviously doesn’t do his homework and spend an appropriate amount of time to have a nuanced and practiced command of the game. I read that all-timers like Troy Aikman and Tony Romo, put in at least 20-30 of pre-broadcast hours before their games. I would venture to say BC puts in ambitiously 3-4 hours.

  51. Buffoman September 15, 2018 7:18 am

The course of the game favors Army. If Hawaii cannot make them punt, the possibility of an Army win is real. They do a terrific job running the clock.

  52. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 7:22 am

This is a dangerous Army drive we need to stop…They score here then they get the ball to start the second half, not good…really need the D to step up now

  53. Boolakanaka September 15, 2018 7:32 am

That was clutch. Tavai, this sole will be playing on Sundays.

  54. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 7:35 am

Hopefully that block helps provide some much needed momentum…could have been much worse of a first half ending…first Army drive in the next half could be telling

  55. clyde September 15, 2018 7:38 am

Dodged a bullet there. Hawaii with 176 total yards at the half; that ain’t gonna get it done.

Impressed on the adjustments Army has made on defense. Hawaii’s defensive woes against a ball-control offense is rooted in its inability to make a stop on third down. Army is 8-for-10 in third-down efficiency. That’s gotta change or …

  56. NorthShoreFan September 15, 2018 7:42 am

    Never expected…Army…244 TYds…Warriors…175 TYds…at the half!?!??
Army is kicking butt! Felt Army was better than Navy and should win the trophy this year again.
    Anyhoo….Let’s Go Warriors!

  57. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 7:44 am

I liked the offense today with Furuta at back…provided power running and much needed better protection. An adjustment that worked for a TD…not sure why we went away from that…

  58. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 7:48 am

If I was the average Joe fan from the Mainland, having heard that Hawaii’s a must watch I would say “yeah they’re OK, a lot of smoke and mirrors there”, “not very physical, very finesse”. This however is the perfect learning experience in the next step of learning process. Can they make adjustments? Can someone, anyone step up and make an impact that leads to a win on the road? So important. Lets hope so.

  59. oneseason September 15, 2018 7:53 am

It would have been nice to see a total domination by Hawaii. Instead the teams and coaching staffs seem to be evenly matched. But if Hawaii is to end the season with a great record, this test may be a good thing. Let’s go Rainbow Warriors!

  60. NYUH September 15, 2018 7:55 am

Great block of the FG. Go Warriors! I was there 8 years ago and looked dire for awhile but Hawaii came back for a great win.

  61. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 8:01 am

Such a chess game. Win or lose this kind of game builds character. Army is so good at home lately. This is quite a tall task to overcome. They got to gut it out.

  62. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 8:05 am

One way or another…HUGE statement stop by the D…here’s our chance offense…let’s get mr. mo back

  63. H-Man September 15, 2018 8:11 am

3 n out. Announcer just said (Hawaii) very conservative play calling, as compared to their first drive.

  64. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 8:20 am

Thanks to solid D/timely penalties another needed stop by the D…common offense…NOW GUYS!

  65. Buffoman September 15, 2018 8:21 am

I agree with that change in rule regarding chop blocking. Showing the replay it looks like a recipient of that kind of block could get hurt. Safety first.

  66. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 8:28 am

brah, interference there Ref. Gotta call that. Grab the catching hand.

  67. Boolakanaka September 15, 2018 8:37 am

    Terrible spot…

  68. clyde September 15, 2018 8:38 am

Hmmm. Can’t you challenge the spot of the ball?

  69. Andrew September 15, 2018 8:44 am

What’s sad is if they lose this game, they’re gonna lose any chance for good attendance for the rest of the season unless they go on an unreal run after

  70. clyde September 15, 2018 8:44 am

And that could be your ballgame. Time of possession: Army 34:42, Hawaii 16:17.

  71. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 8:47 am

    JUST LIKE THAT!

  72. clyde September 15, 2018 8:47 am

Then again, time of possession is over-rated. Haha.

  73. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 8:48 am

With this offense you’re never really out…I believe! Just a defensive stop…and we get chance!

  74. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 8:50 am

They need to swim technique right over the center. Falaniko Noga style.

  75. coachdb September 15, 2018 8:50 am

We’re faster then them we saw that in the first quarter. Take advantage of it!!’

  76. Lowtone123 September 15, 2018 8:51 am

    Defense! Defense!

  77. sanka September 15, 2018 8:57 am

    where’s the defense

  78. H-Man September 15, 2018 8:59 am

4th string NT #69 Azia Seei playing. He is rotating with #66 Eperone Moananu. Haven’t seen Blessman Ta’ala and Doug Russell playing. They’re hurt?

  79. sanka September 15, 2018 9:03 am

    NICE STOP1

  80. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 9:04 am

    FINALLY…a break…here we go,

  81. clyde September 15, 2018 9:06 am

#95. I believe Doug Russell hasn’t played all season. Lots of new numbers playing defense. They need depth cuz of Army’s huge advantage in possession time. Anyway, the final three minutes gonna be interesting.

  82. oneseason September 15, 2018 9:11 am

The officials seem to have blown the run play dead when Hawaii is still gaining yardage.

  83. H-Man September 15, 2018 9:19 am

What happened? Warriors wore black helmets. They should have won.

  84. NorthShoreFan September 15, 2018 9:20 am

Not to pretty. Army D might be the template for other teams. Tough loss but…next up.

  85. clyde September 15, 2018 9:21 am

Props to Army; no shame in losing to that team, particularly on the road. Reality check, but a 3-1 start is better than most would have predicted.

  86. H-Man September 15, 2018 9:22 am

I guess cannot complain. Nebraska lost to Troy at home 19-24.

  87. warrior dan September 15, 2018 9:22 am

this is a really tough loss to take.

  88. Boolakanaka September 15, 2018 9:23 am

Well, we still had a chance with less than a minute. Lots to talk about, but the biggest elephant in the room was Army’s almost effortless ability to convert on third and long. Exacerbating that debacle was that more than a few of those conversions were long passes, from a team that is frankly not a great passing team.

That’s no the players but coaches calls in the field as well as make adjustments….

  89. Unkanesson September 15, 2018 9:32 am

They gave it a good shot, right down to the last minute.
Agree, future opponents will study this one for Army’s defense.
Warriors gotta learn from it too!
Curran/Veneri had a better game. Just a few rabid moments…(Army, not Navy, Bobby!!) You guys lurking on WB?
    Imua!

  90. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 9:34 am

Lots to digest and learn from. Not enough effort today (overmatched effort wise) . Far from home so just tough it out and give yourself a chance against a 40 to 50th percentile team. They did that. There is a lot to figure out and lets not forget the plan was to build for next season as the payoff (attendance, marketing, Program advancement, everything) season so this is the learning year. All gravy this year. But with success comes expectation, this team is young. We the fans have got to take a more realistic view and give them a chance to grow. Good game.

  91. clyde September 15, 2018 9:38 am

Tale of the tape: Army ran 76 plays to Hawaii’s 45, and had the ball for 41 minutes, 18 seconds to Hawaii’s 18:42.

  92. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 9:39 am

Armstrong-Brown’s drop in the first quarter was big. Everything changed. Army’s defense was so on their heels. Would have won this game for sure. Got to figure it out. The Three playmakers so small we need that big body to make a play and be a dependable target, especially in the red zone. Too bad.

  93. 808bowler September 15, 2018 9:47 am

Think play bad play calling hurt them. At the end on 3rd down should’ve called a qb option play. But live and learn. They gave them selves a chance at the end. They will be ok. Long season still.

  94. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 9:52 am

Army so much more physical than Navy. That’s going to be an interesting game. UH is just so much faster than both of them offensively. And defensively the scheme was good, we just didn’t make plays (tackles and one on one coverage) so lots of work to do. The main thing is to “keep your eye on the prize” which is to come out next season as Top 30 and work you way up the rankings with a good, tough, significant (in terms of achieving the upward rankings) schedule. Step by step. We need patience now. No need to panic.

  95. SA-WarBeat September 15, 2018 10:09 am

One positive I will take away…despite the enormous edge in time of possession to Army…the defense didn’t appear to get gassed…even in the last drive, managing a critical 4th down stop

  96. koakane September 15, 2018 10:24 am

Sad the warriors didn’t win but know they will get better as the season goes on.
I remember people just wanted the team to be exciting which they are, score points which they so and to be competitive and they are.
They will be better as the season goes on, they just need to fine tune here there. Coaches to improve then the warriors will be firing on all cylinders.
Hang in their everybody GO BOWS

  97. What up September 15, 2018 10:24 am

Tough Loss today but I got to give it to Army they game planned for Rolo RPO/RnS well.

With the offense not able to move the ball, the defense played their heart out today to keep Hawaii in the game and not give up. The score should not have been this close with Army dominating this game at West Point, NY.

This team is young like the 2005 Warrior team that had a young Colt Brennan or 2009 Warrior team with Bryant Moniz. And this team uniforms looks just as good as those Hawaii Warrior teams and they have a 3-1 winning record swag.

I’m not going to overreact to this hard fought loss to Army. This young team has played with swag, speed, toughness, grit and heart. They are going to take some lumps and growing pains this season. However, just like in real life it’s not how you fall, it’s how you pick yourself up.

    Work Grind/Earn Respect

    Live Aloha/Play Warrior

    Play Swag/Go Warriors!

  98. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 10:26 am

Kind of reminds me of that “Linsanity” phase that Jeremy Lin went through in 2012. Huge success and incredible ability out of nowhere (real huge). And then as teams adjusted his weaknesses were exposed and it was his turn to adjust. He did. And he found his niche in as a productive player. And so can UH. Just got to apply things (the learning opportunities) the right way. Rolo and Batoon can do it. Terrific.

  99. Buffoman September 15, 2018 10:35 am

After looking at the stats, it appears that Army was better prepared defensively to create problems for UH’ s unusual offense than we were for their unusual offense. We gave up a lot of yards, time and big plays.

I agree that dropped pass was somewhat of a momentum changer.

  100. clyde September 15, 2018 10:48 am

Tough for Stephen to cover three major UH teams, travel 5,500 miles and then watch his blog get hi-jacked by a guy who insists on having a conversation with either himself or with his alter-ego.👎

  101. suckkabooya September 15, 2018 10:57 am

    #133 Clyde

Amen. Too bad. Such a nuisance.

  102. dreamcitymike September 15, 2018 11:01 am

Oh well, boy did I underestimated ARMY brain trust, great coaching job …kudos to J.Monken & staff on both sides of the ball! Not always in synch Cole’s passes weren’t always sharp however …defense played good enough to win! We will be there in conf. play with increased growth …Future is bright & rosy!! Live Aloha/ Play Warrior!!!

  103. Boolakanaka September 15, 2018 11:10 am

On the other hand, things could be much worse—just ask Scott Frost. At his post game conference it looked like someone stole his dog and ate his last sandwich…..I bet drawing up plays for MM and seeing what bowl game you will play in, in January, doesn’t sound so bad right now.

  104. Da Punchbowl Kid September 15, 2018 11:15 am

Beware the triple option QB who can pass. Having a couple of bull fullbacks doesn’t hurt either.

Was travel and or jet lag a factor?

Our Warriors did not look like themselves today, but I see this as teachable moment for the whole team. This is a very young. They’ll bounce back. Like the no quit attitude.

    GO WARRIOR!!!
    LIVE ALOHA/PLAY WARRIOR!!!

  105. justsomeguy September 15, 2018 11:26 am

This savich clown has got to go…. they’re incomprehensible… seriously, …and the fake accounts? Like it’s not obvious… this moron needs a ban

  106. Inyoface September 15, 2018 11:50 am

    Bullshit refs

  107. winning September 15, 2018 11:55 am

#118 808 bowler? Right On, UH made big mistake by not trying to go underneath if no mo open guy endzone. they had 1 TO and 2 plays to go at least for first down. Plus they had time!!! ERROR-GO TO JAIL. Plus our O did not play well which tired out the D. Simple- not rocket science. GRADE: “O” gets D MINUS and “D” gets B+. Next 2 G’s are very winnable so looking to be 5-1. I like Bobby Curran and Jon Veneri. If u guys feel like u could be better apply for the job. Also, Troy Aikman and Tony Romo get paid big BUCKS!!! Hell of a lot more than BC and JV! 1 hr review of players good enough unless your on TV and got the bucks. Even Dickman and Hart kept saying Navy.

The more this team plays, the more game film the other teams have on us. If you watch the equivalent of the All-22 film, you see that Rolo’s run and shoot is schematically simple compared to JJ’s run and shoot. their running plays are basic zone reads and most of the passing game comes from RPOs and receivers running rub routes.

In other words, ROLO IS BEING EXPOSED. this season could go downhill pretty quick. fire rolo now unless we see some actual progress on this team. as it looks, rolo is simply norm chow 2.0 with a bit more fireworks.

This ought to be fun: First play of the game, Ta’amu 75-yard TD pass. First Alabama possession, Tua goes 2-for-2 in leading a three-play scoring drive.

Horrible ball placement by refs for first down then no interference call in end zone.

  114. Da Punchbowl Kid September 15, 2018 4:52 pm

    Inyoface –

We saw that too. One ref would place the ball, another would come and move it forward a little. Meh.

Before the season, nobody dreamed that we would win three straight and hang tough with Army at their place. Next couple of games are going to be interesting. I believe this young team will only get better.

Mr. Tsai, the worm got cut in half and now get two worms to exterminate.

yes refs made a horrible spot on that first one which gave them a crucial first down–why didn’t Rolo or someone up in the booth call for a review? you could also see the ref moving the ball forward, in Army’s favor, at least one other time.

And yes; at the end of the game; the Army DB totally shoved Ursua out the side of the endzone but NO CALL; could that have been reviewed?

our Hawaii team left Hawaii 3pm on Tuesday; and landed non-stop to NY at 6am (9.5 hour RED-EYE flight). Doesn’t a red eye totally disrupts your body function–wouldn’t it be better if they take a normal day flight (like 7am non-stop flight, arriving at 10pm in NY); and just skip that day of practice; so that their body functions won’t be disrupted?

  119. Whitey September 15, 2018 6:33 pm

Good game, but too bad the Warriors lost. There’s another game next week at home so they can get back to winning. Team will improve as they play more games.

  120. oneseason September 15, 2018 7:30 pm

It was literally a game of inches for Hawaii. Fresno st leading UCLA 37-14 with 13:04 in the 4th.

  121. burro sabio September 15, 2018 7:59 pm

TWN, the team could probably take a day-time flight, and in one swoop it would spend most of the money that you’re trying to raise.

  122. clyde September 15, 2018 8:34 pm

It doesn’t get any easier for Hawaii in conference: San Diego State beats No. 23 Arizona State, Fresno State routs UCLA, Nevada edges Oregon State and San Jose State falls by just 13 to No. 20 Oregon.

  123. Inyoface September 15, 2018 10:26 pm

Lost taking Army’s 6.5 points godfunit
