Game day: UCLA

PASADENA — For the first time ever … whoops, scratch that. The Warriors played something called Cal State Los Angeles in 1968. OK, for the first time in 49 years, the Warriors will be playing in the famed Rose Bowl today.

It is widely believed the top three quarterback prospects are in the West. The Warriors will face two of them — UCLA’s Josh Rosen today and Wyoming’s Josh Allen in two weeks — on the road.

Key matchups: 1) UCLA’s large but largely inconsistent offensive line against the Warriors’ front seven, 2) The Warriors’ hybrid offense against the fastest secondary on their schedule, and 3) Bruin tight end Caleb Wilson against a linebacker or rover.

Let’s chat.

    Good Morning Tsaikos,

Needed to take my kids to disney this morning. But we will be at the game this afternoon.

    Go Warriors!!!

  5. Tofuzuke September 9, 2017 8:44 am

Good luck team, have fun! This is why we play the game and I’m so excited to see what this team can do. Its time to unveil our true offense and to see how good our defense truly is. Win or lose play hard, represent! We didn’t go all the way over there to punt!!

Awesome blessings falling from the sky this morning. No need water the plants! Just concentrate on the game.

Even tho’ I didn’t post a guess, I won’t be shy about writing my thoughts. Being an out and out homer, I believe that the Warriors will play up and UCLA will be flat, no matter what they say about their preparations. So, I think the score will end up with both teams in the 30’s. But, who has the larger score? Ah, therein lies the rub. I do like azWarrior’s guess tho’, as far as the what the two scores will look like.

With this rain, there must be a rainbow somewhere!

Hope we see a healthy Ursua on the field today.

  9. graham September 9, 2017 10:36 am

My cable provider doesn’t have Pac-12 network. Do you think the game will be on periscope?

  10. al September 9, 2017 10:54 am

Tua was in for a series. Punt.
    This in the second quarter.
    Hurts back in TD.

  11. HawaiiMongoose September 9, 2017 10:59 am

The Pac-12 guy is pronouncing Diocemy St. Juste “Saint Juiced”. SMH.

  12. oneseason September 9, 2017 11:04 am

First series … first down … let’s go Bows!

  13. Ipu Man September 9, 2017 11:14 am

    good news—bad news
UH punted to their 1 foot line.
UCLA easily marches past the 50 yard line.
And now they toss a td.
    🙁

    grrrrrrrrr……….

  16. Buffoman September 9, 2017 12:08 pm

UCLA has not punted. Where is the defense?

  17. Committed Road Warrior September 9, 2017 12:17 pm

    Fake punt on 4th & 22? Hmm…..

  18. oneseason September 9, 2017 12:19 pm

The Pac-12 Network announcers continue to be very fair in their calling of the game.

  19. Whats up September 9, 2017 12:22 pm

Hawaii is beating itself with the mental mistakes & penalties. Hawaii has to clean it up for the second half.

  20. Whats up September 9, 2017 12:24 pm

    Game over!

  21. Whats up September 9, 2017 12:47 pm

The defense is horrible got to stop missing tackles, I knew the Hawaii secondary was going to have a tough day against QB Josh Rosen. But got to make the tackle, the yards after catch is making it way to easy. The mental mistakes, dropped passes and penalties are killing offense drives. Hawaii has got to clean it up in the 2nd half, you can tell that Rolo is not going to just give up, he is calling fake punt, going for it on 4th down. It’s up the players to respond at this point.

  22. Buffoman September 9, 2017 1:00 pm

There was a time a long time ago when we were known for our defense. People said it was boring. Being smoked because there is no defense is boring.

  23. H-Man September 9, 2017 1:08 pm

    The offensive line looks good.

  24. Buffoman September 9, 2017 1:24 pm

We can’t make them punt! Yikes, tough to win if a third of the equation is not functioning.

  25. Frankie September 9, 2017 1:38 pm

I know it doesn’t matter already, but I have to question the offensive play calling the entire game. I think Stutzman should call plays!

  26. Mytake September 9, 2017 1:48 pm

Hawaii defensive MVP is the half time clock

  27. Mytake September 9, 2017 1:56 pm

So as not to be to negative, the O line is good!

  28. JJ September 9, 2017 2:10 pm

Tough loss for Hawaii, but let’s take away the positives. Hawaii will win games this yea and they have a good offense. The defense can learn from their mistakes and make adjustments for next game.

  29. What? September 9, 2017 2:12 pm

There is no quit in Hawaii. This will pay dividend in conference play. Go Bows!

  30. Ipu Man September 9, 2017 2:18 pm

    UH UCLA
    24 65 A-House
    23 21 oneseason
    Since Hawaii lost
    23 56
    I think A-House the most accurate prediction…

  31. Ipu Man September 9, 2017 2:22 pm

    UH 550 yards total offense…

  32. cappie the dog September 9, 2017 2:27 pm

Thank you Ipu Man for collection our predictions, but take another look at roybgiv’s final tally, arguably, that’s the closest.

  33. cappie the dog September 9, 2017 2:29 pm

Nobody except the kicker’s family thought that 50-yard attempt was going to be successful.

    Cappie you have a point…
    Rock, scissors, paper…

  35. islandman September 9, 2017 2:34 pm

    32. The FG attempt was long enough, i think, but went wide left.

  36. leron September 9, 2017 3:04 pm

Credit where credit is due. That Rosen kind is for real. Defense got some work to do. Offense needs to finish drives. All that yardage and not a lot to show on the scoreboard. Still some things to build off of and work on in the bye week.

  37. roygbivs September 9, 2017 3:13 pm

Had chance. Next game more important.

    A View From Afar gottum

  38. papajoe2 September 9, 2017 3:20 pm

a view from afar has it at 24-54.

  39. A View From Afar September 9, 2017 3:27 pm

Ipu Man, just for the record, this was the pertinent section in post #3:

    27 52 roygbivs
    24 38 Raider Dogs
    24 48 DaMenehune
    24 54 A View From Afar
    24 65 A-House

I missed by a total of 3 points.

  40. Warrior Fan September 9, 2017 3:41 pm

Rosens had more TD passes the incomplete passes. Defense isn’t good enough this year. Our D will get torched by the skilled players from other teams in the MWC. Let’s hope the offense can win in shootouts this year

  41. Mytake September 9, 2017 4:39 pm

A View From Afar is the clear winner . Good call. Bad for UH

  42. Inyoface September 9, 2017 4:49 pm

That fake pass interference call seemed to have killed all momentum for Hawaii. It seems with PAC 12 refs we get all the call at the end when the game when it is out of reach so it looks like the total yards penalty years are equal at the end.

  43. H-Man September 9, 2017 4:52 pm

All in all, not bad. Balanced offense produced 515 total yards. Get ready for conference play and beat Wyoming. Go Warriors !!!

  44. Inyoface September 9, 2017 5:20 pm

    Yards not years

  45. Inyoface September 9, 2017 5:29 pm

For some reason when we dont score on the opening drive I feel like that’s not a good sign throughout the game.

  46. Ipu Man September 9, 2017 5:38 pm

I missed it: A View From Afar had it at 24-54.
My bad. His good. 🙂 He was only off by 3 points.
Wow Wow Lau Lau prediction of the game.

  47. Inyoface September 9, 2017 5:48 pm

Unleash Dru Brown, if he can play like
Johnny manziel then let him play that way.

  48. oneseason September 9, 2017 7:03 pm

I was glad coach Rolovich asked the sideline interviewer at halftime to check with her PAC-12 Network colleague in the booth about the offensive pass interference call. There were at least two calls that the PAC-12 Network announcers called out as questionable. On the other hand, the refs ejected 2 Bruins defensive players for targeting.

  49. Chicken Grease September 9, 2017 7:46 pm

We are in good company, folks:
    • An Ohio State lose today (which—unless politics favor them, think their National Championship hopes are dashed. How else can we interpret them losing to a # 5?)

    • Irish lose today too—to our Sugar Bowl friends, Georgia. Come on, Notre Dame. You gotta crush SEC!!!!

  50. cappie the dog September 9, 2017 8:48 pm

Boise State backup QB: Worst pass ever.

Earlier in the game, there was a Washington State fumble that resembled the Robert Lam play.

I hope the guy who runs the Ernest Hemingway house in the Keys comes to his senses and flees. I like “A Farewell to Arms”, too, but geez… Listen to the bald governor.

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid September 9, 2017 9:29 pm

550 yards total offense. The Warriors kept their heads up and just played. Proud of them! I have faith!

    Mahalo Warriors!!!

  52. UHfan808 September 9, 2017 9:59 pm

    RE 37 cappie dog

Oh gosh heck no! Hehe Pomai is still around and he still watches UH fb games but he has gotten …kinda really grouchy these days! And somehow became more philosophical too! Hahaha! 😀

    Love you, Pomai! 😀

Ipu Man – You must tell us the story of how Game Picks became your TO DO 🙂

  53. UHfan808 September 9, 2017 10:00 pm

    to clarify – That was yesterday’s 37 that I meant ^

  54. Chicken Grease September 9, 2017 10:24 pm

Da Punchbowl Kid, you are correct. The statistics of a Warriors were there. Best performances so far. It is scoring points that count, however.

O.K. Who will cry with a Grease?

    I cry. 😥

  55. UHfan808 September 9, 2017 10:39 pm

Good evening, Tsai-meister, Tsai-kos, and Lurkers!

Wow, what an interesting game it was today! We were on the road, in a game against a great team in UCLA, and yes, we didn’t win but we sure got to see our team’s progress! Positive progress! Yay! Progress for the positive is always a super great thing! 😀

That said, I’m quite sure we all can think of more than a bunch of positive things the team and individual members did 🙂

So on to the next game but before they do, our team – in a general sense – just needs more of the progress to be happening all of the time all over the place consistently all at the right times. And also in a general sense, they need to work more on really understanding – which begets believing in – their roles as they are assigned and truly appreciating what each of them bring to the table – like why their role exists for a team this team our team – and then going out to just do what they need to do once at that proverbial table.

Today there were so many amazing good wonderful fantastic moments of greatness!

Need those magical moments to be happening consistently all the time …as though they eat magical allllll. day. long. !!!

I mean, just bring it! JUST DOOOOOOO IT! Hahaha! 😀 (And be…Grrrrrr..! )

Is that at least some of what you meant, David Toloumu? Hehe Please feel free to clarify! 😀

  56. UHfan808 September 9, 2017 10:47 pm

    RE 54 Chicken Grease

Sorry, no tears shed by me..because..one must start from somewhere! 🙂

Never have I ever felt so much more confident than with this year’s team. It is invigorating 🙂

  57. Akamai Okole September 10, 2017 2:32 am

    Great Morning All!

Bye weeks can be a great thing.

    Das it

  58. Whats up September 10, 2017 2:45 am

Hawaii Cornerbacks have got to get things in order, I mean NFL Prospect QB Josh Rosen shredded the secondary and was helped by missed tackles. And in 2 weeks this secondary faces another NFL Prospect QB Josh Allen. I’m not sure if Wyoming has the WR speed that UCLA has but the QB is really good. I like to see Hawaii stop with the drive killing penalties, make tackles to stop the YAC and get TE Tui Unga more touches. Credit to the O-line and D-line play so far this season, the skill positions got to improve.

  59. oneseason September 10, 2017 7:31 am

The UH game play yesterday seemed to have a lot more of the run and shoot. The PAC-12 announcers presented a nice segment on Mouse Davis and June Jones, and talked a fair amount about Hawaii’s offense under Coach Jones, so that might have helped with the impression. But there seemed to be more crossing routes. With the ability to get 515 total yards against UCLA, it should be a fun see UH play at Aloha Stadium against Colorado State on 30 Sept.

  60. OCWarrior September 10, 2017 7:40 am

The game was about what should be expected at this point. It could have been closer but UH had to have played a perfect game, which it didn’t. As observed in the first two games, defense has struggled with cornerback play, consistently pressure on th QB, and outside containment. However, the offense and special teams look good. Dru Brown still needs to look off DBs and stop forcing passes and Collie needs to catch better but they moved the ball well and showed some new wrinkles. Aside from long field goals, the rest of the special teams seem to be solid.

Going forward they will struggle with the top of the league but I believe they will have decent season and add another building block for the future of warrior football! Coach Rolo is doing a great job!

  61. Mytake September 10, 2017 9:08 am

I hope Hawaii’s play by play guys paid attention to the Pac 12 guys because they were good.

  62. Chicken Grease September 10, 2017 9:31 am

    Mytake September 10, 2017 9:08 am
I hope Hawaii’s play by play guys paid attention to the Pac 12 guys because they were good.

Hear hear, Mytake. For the radio play-by-play, sick of Veneri’s singing after every TD, whatever. I keep waiting for the guy to actually SAY something during the broadcast. It’s like he’s explaining a contract or something.

Josh Pacheco. Now THAT’s a radio voice.

  64. Ipu Man September 10, 2017 11:53 am

UHfan808, glad to hear Pomai is still amongst us.
Since he seemingly did not continue to post the predictions,
I just tried to be the next man up. But can’t fill his shoes.
Maybe the winning post should take up the task of posting the
next game predictions. What do you think View From Afar?

  65. Ipu Man September 10, 2017 11:54 am

    Pomai, I apologise for posting.

  66. cappie the dog September 10, 2017 1:11 pm

I really appreciated and miss the softball webcasts.

    Pomai did a great service.

I presume the reason why UH softball doesn’t get much airtime is because nobody is buying any advertising time.

  67. SteveM September 10, 2017 1:14 pm

Ipu Man — actually, it was me who took over the Guess the score around 2 years ago…when the Punchbowl kid and WarriorNY started to offer prizes. The picks list has value in that it is a barometer of support for the team.

I stopped mid-year because the number of guesses favoring the other team were longer than the other (it was the Norm Chow era). That is why I suggested you make a separate list of guesses favoring the other guys (in order of their) highest score.

I am glad you took over the task this year. No prize necessary… but if ST has a piece of swag lying around… 🙄

  68. SteveM September 10, 2017 1:16 pm

…and, as I recall, the best guesser was “A View from Afar” in that year, 🙂

  69. Chicken Grease September 10, 2017 3:53 pm

Come back to the board, Pomai.

    ‘Smattah? 🤔
