Game Day: San Jose State

And we move on to the second half of the season …

It’s homecoming, and here’s what to watch:

> UH offensive line: I’m at Kailua Safeway last night, and a former UH lineman tells me — insists — that John Estes is a great coach. As Dave Koga once told me, always listen to the o-linemen. They know the most. The linemen have been blocking well for Diocemy Saint Juste and keeping Dru Brown upright. Estes should be able to clean up the post-play, extra-curricular activities.

> Frank Ginda: In seven games, the Spartan inside linebacker has 106 tackles, an average of 15.1 per game. He has 59 solo stops, also most among FBS players. The thing is, he’s not a blitzer or penetrator. Most of his tackles are in the SJSU rectangle. He’s not flashy. But if you hit an inside gap, you’re most likely to meet Ginda.

> 1992 team — Pay attention to tonight’s first timeout. That’s when the 1992 team will be recognized as part of its Circle of Honor induction. In the 1992 Holiday Bowl, the Warriors took it to an Illinois defense that would produce three NFL linebackers. That UH team had future head coaches in Paul Johnson, Mike Sewak, Kenny Niumatalolo and Jeff Monken. The beauty of that season was the QB partnership between Michael Carter and Ivin Jasper. It also was a thing of beauty to see Carter running that triple-option offense. At Carter’s wedding reception several years later, there was the video montage, first of the bride. Carter’s part was his UH highlights. The place went crazy with applause. After 25 years, the 1992 team is getting its long-overdue respect. Now … when’s the 2007 team getting into the Circle?

* * * * *

A few years ago, I’m in Traffic Court for a seat-belt violation. Why appeal? Because, like UH officials, I figured they can’t punish you additionally for appealing.

My defense is after I was stopped, I probably took off my seat belt to get my papers in the glove compartment. The thing is, they go alphabetically, and my last name starts with a “T.” So by the time I face the judge — who was a UH fan, by the way — about eight others used the unbuckled-to-reach-for-the-papers defense. So, yep, I had to pay the fine and court costs. (The only one who got off was an EMT who said he unbuckled to get his papers that were in his EMT jacket. Geesh.)

The digressive point is: UH fans can’t fret about the leniency granted to North Carolina basketball. Fair or not, you can only worry about yourself.

Still can’t take the bs coming from UNC and the NCAA regarding this issue. 7 years to investigate!??! The reasoning behind the decision makes me want to throw up….and the powers that be actually swallows it. We do need the FBI to investigate the corruption and bribery that is going on.

Congrats to the 92 team! Won the old WAC and scored a victory over a favored Illinois team at a bowl on the continent.

UNLV is leading AFA 30-7 in the 3rd quarter. Cal got smacked by UW last week, but came back to upset #8 WSU last night. You never know each week.

Oregon fans wondering how a kid from Lake Oswego (OR), QB Eric Dungey, ends up at Syracuse in beating #2 Clemson last night. Happens everywhere – local kids signing with out-of-state schools.

    GO WARRIORS!!

  5. clyde October 14, 2017 10:09 am

Por favor, Stephen. Since you brought it up in this morning’s analysis, can you explain the difference between Greeley’s “chop block” (penalty) and Chung’s “angled” block (no penalty). When I saw Chung attack the lineman’s lower legs my first thought was … damn, Diocemy just lost another long touchdown. But, no call. Phew.

Then again, I also remember seeing the Colorado State center block Akoteu with his left arm (he actually appeared to grab his jersey) while simultaneously holding off Tavai with his right arm — both arms fully extended as if he were a telephone pole. Again, no call. Touchdown, CSU. Puzzling.

ST…point well taken. If everyone sweeps everything under the rug, then what? The issue just goes against the things we’ve been taught … eh fogit it.

” Dave Ridpath, president of the athletics ethics watchdog Drake Group, called the NCAA and its ruling “shameful,” and said that it demonstrates institutions can get away with academic fraud and game the system.
Ridpath said according to athletics directors and former members of the NCAA’s Division I Committee on Infractions he spoke with, this was a clear and atrocious example of academic fraud. But ultimately, Ridpath said, he wasn’t surprised.

“I don’t think that the NCAA enforcement committee ever would have the guts to punish North Carolina,” he said. ”

Anxious to see the adjustments on defense. And pray Dru does not try to get too cute trying too make positive yards when he simply should throw the ball away.

  9. What? October 14, 2017 10:42 am

UNC and Roy Williams got away with fraud because of their status and money in college basketball. But, there will be a day when all their garbage will surface. In any case, their reputation, the Carolina way is ruined. That scandal will always be tied to the program.

A lot of schools do it right. Blue blood schools win at ALL cost. That is a lot of pressure to place on themselves and their fan base and boosters. I just think the FBI just touched the surface of their investigation. A lot of coaches are shaking in their shoes right now. Roy may say the right thing, but all it takes is one person to tie him or UNC to the FBI investigation. If that happens, UNC will throw Roy Williams under the bus faster than someone can say “next coach.”

The member schools of the NCAA will not let them forget their fraud. I am looking forward to the game tonight.

  10. Old School Dave October 14, 2017 10:44 am

Impressed with so many fans in Resser Stadium to support Oregon State and their interim HC vs Colorado after Gary Andersen stepped down. These fans are showing a lot of support for a downtrodden program going through some rough times.

  11. Stephen Tsai October 14, 2017 11:22 am

    Clyde:
After Saint Juste’s TD run was nullified, we asked a UH coach about the holding penalty. He said you could a call a penalty on every play. That’s football. I think in the other case, when you’re 6-7 and blocking low, it’s a little different than when you’re 5-10, at least appearance wise.
I actually think they should have a cause-and-effect ruling, just like on pass plays. There’s no interference if a pass is ruled to be uncatchable. I think there should be no penalty if the violation had no bearing on the play.

  12. Lowtone123 October 14, 2017 11:25 am

I have predicted UH winners for every game this season. Call me an optimist.
    Here it goes…
    Us- 35
    Dem-23

  13. Stephen Tsai October 14, 2017 11:30 am

    Re: NC
Of course, it’s unfair that not all penalties are punished equally. And you see that complaint in how the NFL commissioner metes out justice.
But at the same time, the bottom line is: Did you do something wrong?
If someone is completely innocent, then any sort of punishment would be inappropriate. But if somebody did something wrong, well, you’re at the mercy of the court.
UH’s violation was manini in comparison to NC’s transgressions. And if UH got punished a lot, then NC should have been punished more. But UH did break a rule, however small.

Why is it wrong to give a lap top to a “student Athlete”?

  15. clyde October 14, 2017 12:00 pm

Thanks, Stephen. So we’re saying Greeley’s block was more blatant (clearly more visible) whereas the refs likely missed Chung’s block or allowed it to happen? Wonder how much discretion referees really apply?

Interesting to also see Dejon Allen talking to an official before heading to the locker room at the half at Nevada. I’m guessing he was (politely) asking for an explanation on the holding call that negated DSJ’s 84-yard TD run.

The Student/Athlete taking the course should have known. How do you get a grade if you don’t go to class, have a prof do your paper and get a passing grade?
    done

  19. islandman October 14, 2017 2:01 pm

Some of the pertinent comments from a newspaper in N Carolina :
” The NCAA, in its final report years in the making, imposed no serious penalties on UNC despite the school operating and condoning one of the most egregious academic/athletic scandals in history. …
Because if ever there was a case that deserved punishment, it was this: Two decades of fake classes that didn’t meet, allowed papers largely written by someone else and handed out As and Bs to help athletes maintain their eligibility.
Beyond the scope, seriousness and longevity of UNC’s transgressions, another black eye for the school came from its response. Instead of being horrified and holding itself accountable when the facts surfaced years ago, the university’s leadership dodged, denied, delayed and ducked.

Thousands of athletes in non-revenue sports indeed compete on the field as just one part of their university education.
But in major revenue sports, that notion is a charade. With these stars bringing in billions of dollars for their schools, the idea of a student-athlete has long been fiction, and the NCAA has now confirmed that. ”

#11 – the flaw in that reasoning was pointed out way back in the Michigan St game. The ESPN play-by-play guy was complaining about a penalty called on a block that Mich St made on a UH defender that was way out of the play. The color guy said that if you don’t call illegal blocks that don’t affect the outcome of the play, it encourages cheap shots.

  43. Creative721 October 14, 2017 6:46 pm

Insanity has been defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. This is what’s wrong with UH’s Defense. It is coaching or a lack of it by the DC. Still seeing the same giant holes and giving up the big plays. At least UH’s Offense is starting to come alive. Hope Ursua is okay.

  44. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2017 8:17 pm

  46. Mytake October 14, 2017 8:45 pm

Can we get someone who can call play by play on the radio

  47. Buffoman October 14, 2017 8:53 pm

Defense is still suspect. Defensive backs just don’t appear to be in position. D-line not pushing o-line.

  48. NorthShoreFan October 14, 2017 8:57 pm

Don’t care if we get the W this game but…this defense needs to be addressed! Why, how come the middle is so wide open with NO DEFENSE AROUND?!!!??
This is nothing new. It’s been happening for a number of games now.
What happened to the “drawing board”? What kind of picture was drawn? Who is responsible? Who will be held responsible? Is our boyz on D making it happen in spite of the “drawing board” plans?
I’d like to see, on the next coach tv/radio show the pointed questions be asked and not settle for the vanilla responses.

  56. clyde October 14, 2017 11:01 pm

I guess it’s why they get paid the big bucks (well, maybe not at UH) and why we’re not coaches, but can anyone defend the decision to call on Saint-Juste for his 38th and 39th carries of the game with an 11-point lead and 3:30 to play on a night when you lost your best receiver to a knee injury earlier in the game? Then Rolo goes on radio and admits they ran Saint-Juste too many times? Hmmm.

  57. Kahuna October 14, 2017 11:07 pm

Well…San Diego State needs to concentrate on Fresno first. They play them before they play us. If SDSU was to lose to Fresno, the game against Hawaii will lose some of its luster.

We will get the advantage of having two weeks to prepare for SDSU while SDSU have to focus on Fresno this week.

It was nice to see the reduction in Hawaii dumb penalties and watch SJSU commit the dumb penalties over and over. One of those dumb selfish unsportsmanlike penalties SJSU committed cost them to kick a way longer extra point that Hawaii blocked and returned for 2 points. And was a game changing play.

The Hawaii secondary is still giving up way to many big plays, if they can’t cover any body they have to at least make the tackle!

  65. islandman October 15, 2017 8:35 am

The middle of our pass defense was open all night, per Bobby C.

This was the 2nd time someone returned a kickoff almost 100 yards vs UH. Wyoming had one for 97 yards and San Jose St had one for 96, which made the score 28-26. What’s missing ?
