A wife’s tale

Sometimes the zaniest Hawaii football plans come from … an assistant coach’s wife.

It was Meredith Yoro, wife of safeties coach Jacob Yoro, who learned that the WWE was going to have a show in the Blaisdell Arena during the Warriors’ bye week. She suggested that, perhaps, that would be another unique way for head coach Nick Rolovich to award a scholarship. Rolovich agreed.

During Rolovich’s visit with Dave Aranda, LSU’s defensive coordinator and a former UH coach, the idea was mentioned. Aranda’s wife had a friend whose husband is a boxing promoter in Los Angeles. So Rolovich said he called the husband of Aranda’s wife’s friend — getting all this? — and “I’m telling him what I’m trying to get done. He says, ‘I know somebody’ and boom, he got in contact.”

And that’s how backup quarterback Hunter Hughes received a scholarship in the ring during the past week’s WWE event.

The unfortunate part was Rolovich never got to display his wrestling moves. “I was watching Ric Flair highlights,” Rolovich said. “I was watching “Macho Man” Savage highlights. I watched The Ultimate Warrior highlights.”

In the end, Rolovich listened to his assistant coach’s wife.

It also should be remembered that Rose Suiaunoa, wife of defensive coordinator Legi Suiaunoa, was instrumental in UH’s recruitment of middle linebacker Penei Pavihi.

Per my previous comment last week, Josh Rosen, the bruin with a million dollar arm, he had a very Cutler-esque performance today, just like his mentor…..

  3. H-Man September 16, 2017 10:18 am

Memphis takes down UCLA and Rosen 48-45 by putting on a heck of a pass rush, something Hawaii could not do. Rosen was out of sorts in the 4th, throwing a pick and lots of hurries due to pressure. Memphis’ corners also did a great job in coverage. Hawaii has to step it up on defense.

Josh Rosen made a number of bad throws just like A & M. Against us they worked-how do you spell “chip on ur Shoulder”. we need a big one all year long! GoWarriors!!!!

UH has to step it up on offense, We scored only 2 TD’s until the 4th quarter vs. UCLA. Memphis scored 7 total, although one was an INT for a TD.
Memphis defense gave up 45 points.

    Great Afternoon All!

    Great find by Coach Yoro.

    6 degrees of separation

    Das it

After watching the UCLA game today, the difference between UH and Memphis is simple. UH lacks speed.

Alabama CB doesn’t look that good, so far vs. Colorado St receivers.

Aranda ‘s LSU defense not so good today.
Colorado St looked pretty good vs Alabama.

    By quarters
    Oregon 14 28 0 7 = 49
    Wyoming 10 0 3 0 =13
Oregon won big time 2nd quarter but guess thin air tired
them out 3rd quarter, and cowpokes, too in 4th quarter.

  15. Ipu Man September 16, 2017 5:12 pm

Dave Aranda might be unemployed if LSU continues defense
like today… But probably he will wind up as head coach somewhere.

    On UCLA and SDSU…

Memphis has some talent on offense and defense. A couple of them are transfers. But they recruited really well the last couple of years.

San Diego state has talent also. Rocky Long has been HC for 7-8 years and he’s been building that program up big.

I think the way Rolovich and his staff are doing as well as they can. Gotta give him time to build up and get his recruits he needs for his offense. Lets be honest when Chow was here (4years) he really didn’t recruit well at all. I think Fred von Appen recruited better. You may all disagree but look at the facts. He may not have won games because offense philosophy but he recruited talent. We all know what JJ did the following year. So give Rolo and staff some time to build. Rocky Long had 7+ years to build SDSU. Boise State started with Dirk Koetter for 3 years, Dan Hawkins for 4 years and Chris Peterson 8 years. Give Rolo and staff TIME…

    I meant Memphis not UCLA…

Wyoming got crushed by Oregon yesterday. No barometer but WCU handled Gardner Webb while Wyoming struggled to a 28-0 over GW. Warriors gonna have to show up with a chip on their shoulder and ready to fly around on defense and get to Allen-they screen and draw effectively. Bottom line this is a very winnable game but not without complete effort by all, three phases. Don’t think they will be quite as up for the team from Hawaii thinking they just played a good Oregon team. Gotta get the job offense going and productive early and shut them down on defense. Josh Allen is better than he showed yesterday-it’s gonna be a grind-GoWarriors!!!

Check out Wyomings stats-240 yards rushing and 562 passing thru 3 games. Granted that’s Iowa and Oregon, but we also played a pretty good UCLA team and even though UMass is 0-3 they cetertainly are no Gardener Webb. Wyomings opponents had great degrees of success running the ball and Wyoming has had difficulty running the ball which might be attributed to two true freshman starting on the OL. The table is set, lets show up hungry!

Was at the Saint Louis-Punahou game. Saint Louis QB Cordeiro put on a show. His passing accuracy and timing with his receivers was awesome. He hit them in full stride. Hope that he sticks with his commitment to Hawaii.

UH has won before at Laramie and can do it again.

I agree that Rolo and the program will get better with a few more recruiting classes. The “big if” is that unless a P-5 school comes calling given Rolo’s accomplishments while getting paid peanuts by UH (also with the added title of Marketing Manager, now). UH Admin people are happy when you work on the cheap and “no complain.”

SDSU (beat 2 Pac-12 teams) under Rocky Long finally has the team many have thought that the Aztecs should have always had given their location in a prime recruiting area, nice campus and city, and the school’s entrance requirements. RB Rashaan Penney looks just as good as Donnel Pumphrey.

  22. A-House September 17, 2017 10:46 am

many may disagree, but it’s OK, I am a believer in letting all players get on the field — one play, several plays — don’t matter — least they can tell people in the future, “I played for HAWAII”

if they were recruited and given a scholarship, surely the coaches saw something in each player.

one or two plays will not decide the out come of a game — yes, people will say what about Flutie’s hail mary? so???????????????

  23. Maddog50 September 17, 2017 11:35 am

A-House my friend, recruiting is not a science. There are hits and misses. Once you join you have many many chances two deeps on O and D and special teams-you earn the right to get on the field by your actions. I have tons of memories only a few plaques and awards-I am not into participation trophies. You work you hustle you bust tail you get on the field. I still love you!
