Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii basketball teams hold down the fort; water polo and tennis teams go forth

By Brian McInnis on January 27, 2020

The basketball world — heck, the world in general — was shaken by the death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant on Sunday. That morning’s helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif., took the life of Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others. Locally, the mood changed quickly from the previous night’s wins for the UH basketball teams — at UC Riverside for the women and at home, and a men’s thriller over UC Davis in the program’s 100th season celebration game. UH paid […]

Hawaii water polo: Rainbow Wahine open season ranked No. 6

By Brian McInnis on January 15, 2020

The Hawaii water polo team opens the 2020 season this weekend with a No. 6 ranking in the country. However, based on the CWPA poll released Wednesday, someone else — No. 5 UC Irvine — is narrowly favored to win the Big West this year. Defending BWC champion Hawaii, which made its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015 last spring, opens the season with the four-team Rainbow Invite this weekend. It starts with No. 12 Loyola Marymount at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic […]

Rainbow Forecast: Warrior volleyball hits the road; 2 basketball doubleheaders; Wahine tennis and water polo begin

By Brian McInnis on January 13, 2020

The top-ranked Hawaii men’s volleyball team certainly looked legitimate at home playing against unranked competition. How will the Rainbow Warriors fare on the road against some ranked foes? That’s one of the big questions in UH athletics this week — UH plays four straight on the mainland, starting with two this weekend — but there’s also a pair of basketball doubleheaders at the Stan Sheriff Center (Thursday and Saturday) to occupy your time. The Rainbow Warriors and Wahine hoops squads are […]

Without further ado, here are 12 of the biggest moments spanning UH sports in 2019, the final year of this decade. The order of some of the below events and moments is subjective, of course, and you might have one or two in mind that is not here. Feel free to add […]

Hawaii tennis, water polo players receive All-America honors

By Brian McInnis on June 1, 2019

The Hawaii women’s tennis and water polo programs received some heady individual recognition over the last few days. Water polo players Irene Gonzalez and Elyse Lemay-Lavoie were named All-Americans, as was UH tennis star Petra Melounova. Gonzalez, a first-teamer, and Lemay-Lavoie, a second-teamer, helped the Rainbow Wahine to the Big West championship and the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015. For Gonzalez, a two-time Big West player of the year and a senior who scored 60 goals this season, […]

Hawaii water polo: Misfortune strikes UH; Cal downs Rainbow Wahine in NCAA quarterfinals

By Brian McInnis on May 10, 2019

UPDATE: Hawaii got off to a strong start and led California by two goals, and UH was tied with the Golden Bears at halftime, but the Pac-12 school dominated the second half to swim away with a 17-13 quarterfinal win over UH at Stanford on Friday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Golden Bears, who improved to 3-1 against Hawaii this season — 3-0 on the mainland — rattled off five straight goals spanning the third and fourth quarters once UH got within […]

A cheer went up and the applause echoed in the water polo clubhouse at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Hawaii learned Monday afternoon that it will face fourth-seeded California in the quarterfinals of the 10-team NCAA tournament on May 10 at Stanford. And that it was the Golden Bears, a team that fifth-ranked UH defeated during the regular season, was met with enthusiasm. Big West champion #HawaiiWWP reacts to the reveal that it will play No. 4 seed California (a team […]
