Rainbow Forecast: Big West tournament time for Rainbow Warriors, Wahine; Big West volleyball begins at CSUN

By Brian McInnis on March 9, 2020

March Madness is upon us. Not just for the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams, mind you — they are both in action in the Big West tournament this week in Southern California — but for everyone involved in the entire slew of events going on below. It is truly sport crossover season (check out the number of categories checked off above). But who’s still buzzing from that epic men’s volleyball five-setter with BYU at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday? […]

Hawaii softball: Late heroics by “Mama” Rivera not enough as plate troubles sink Rainbow Wahine in doubleheader

By Jonathan Chen on February 29, 2020

Junior pinch hitter Merilis “Mama” Rivera announced her presence Saturday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. With the Hawaii softball team trailing late against the Seattle Redhawks, Rivera sent the first pitch she saw over the left-field wall. The clutch home run plated a pair of runs for Hawaii, putting them in within a shout of a come-from-behind victory. The homer was the first hit of the season for Rivera, a career .088 hitter. It was also her first […]

Hawaii softball: Rainbow Wahine offense takes down Nevada, but bats go quiet vs. Oregon State

By Jonathan Chen on February 28, 2020

After a tournament-opening loss to Oregon State on Thursday night, the Hawaii softball team didn’t have to wait long for a second shot at the Beavers. But first the Rainbow Wahine had to get through Nevada in the first part of a Friday night doubleheader. Hawaii took care of business against the Wolf Pack, notching nine hits in an 11-3 win. The ‘Bows’ second game against Oregon State didn’t go quite so well. The active bats from the earlier game […]

Hawaii softball: Rainbow Wahine fall to Oregon State on late home run

By Jonathan Chen on February 27, 2020

The Hawaii softball team fell just shy of a Power Five win to open the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament, as a late Oregon State home run undid five shutout innings by the Rainbow Wahine in a 2-1 affair on Thursday night. Sophomore Ashley Murphy got the start in the circle, and despite giving up the late go-ahead home run, she pitched through to the end of the game. With five straight scoreless innings to her name, […]

Hawaii softball: Rainbow Wahine seek Power 5 win

By Brian McInnis on February 26, 2020

A topsy-turvy start to the season for Hawaii softball has featured some impressive hitting and hit-or-miss pitching. One thing that the Rainbow Wahine (8-8) have lacked thus far? A signature win over a power conference opponent. The Wahine are 0-3 against Power Five teams — they lost to Iowa State twice (8-4 and 7-2) in the Paradise Classic and Iowa (2-1) in the Hawaii Invitational. Of those, they were in two of them; they gave up seven runs in the top […]

Rainbow Forecast: Senior week for men’s basketball; baseball takes on Vanderbilt; softball hosts tourney

By Brian McInnis on February 24, 2020

For the last time this season, men’s basketball takes center stage at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH, struggling mightily for the month of February, will attempt to right itself before a supportive crowd in games on Thursday and Saturday before the Rainbow Warriors head to the mainland for the month of March to decide their postseason fate. Two starting seniors, Eddie Stansberry and Zigmars Raimo, will be sent off Saturday against UC Riverside, win or loss. But as for UH […]

Hawaii athletics: Ups and downs of a busy Saturday

By Brian McInnis on February 23, 2020

A lot happened in the realm of University of Hawaii athletics on Saturday, the 22nd of February. Some of it was excellent, some so-so, and some UH fans would probably sooner forget. Just about every spring sport was in action in form or fashion, with the notable exception being the No. 1 UH men’s volleyball team, which had a bye week. UH tennis also did not play Saturday. The singular greatest achievements were had by the men’s and women’s swimming […]

Hawaii softball: Callee Heen climbs up home run chart in Rainbow Wahine win

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 20, 2020

As so often happens, Callee Heen wasn’t aiming for the fences when she delivered a pivotal blast for the Rainbow Wahine softball team Thursday night. After the Wahine erased an early three-run deficit against Portland State, when Heen stepped to the plate with a runner on base and two out in the bottom of the fourth, “I was just trying to hit line drives,” she said, “because the wind was really blowing a lot so nothing in the air was […]
